Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

Chapter 511 - 505: Overwhelming Fury

Chapter 511: Chapter 505: Overwhelming Fury

If an ordinary person were to see this, they’d probably have a heart attack.

Xie Ning, however, was completely unfazed. She continued taking photos of everything, then found a dark, gloomy corner and snapped a selfie in her gas mask, sending it to Gu Chen and Lu Wei...

Her intention was to show them, ’I’m well-protected, so don’t worry!’

But when they received the photo and saw the ghastly white corridor in the background, they only grew more panicked.

They really wanted to fall to their knees before her. She truly wasn’t afraid of anything.

Xie Ning stepped in a puddle of sewage. She glanced down and silently lifted her foot.

It looked like this floor had been deliberately sabotaged. Sewage seemed to be flowing continuously into the corridor from a hidden experimental pod.

Xie Ning raised an eyebrow, used her Gold Ability to break open the experimental pod as usual, and then kicked her way in.

Sure enough, after breaking into several more experimental pods, she found they had all been emptied out. She wasn’t as lucky as she had been downstairs.

’It seems the so-called base commander deliberately had those people on the third floor release the big monster to stall me, giving him time to grab useful equipment and make a run for it.’

But there was nowhere to run.

Standing to one side of the corridor, Xie Ning spread out her spiritual power to scan the area. She detected signs of several living people moving inside an experimental pod at the far end of the hall.

Reaching the end of the hall, Xie Ning kicked the door open. The scene that greeted her was shocking.

About a dozen children were gathered inside the pod, appearing to be between three and eight years old. Every one of them had a vacant, dazed look, their eyes barely moving.

At the sound, the child closest to the door merely lifted their head. Their gaze met Xie Ning’s, their expression utterly blank.

Their physical characteristics were also strange.

Nearly every child was different from an ordinary child.

Some had crimson faces covered in strange fur.

Others had grown fox ears or dog tails.

Xie Ning’s hands, clenched at her sides, began to tremble with rage.

After snapping several photos—CLICK! CLICK!—and sending them, she felt like she was about to explode.

’Letting that researcher she’d just hammered to death die so easily was too merciful.’

’She’d been too merciful.’

’She should have flayed these demons, torn them limb from limb, and thrown them into a vat of boiling oil.’

One little girl, with an oversized head and a small body, looked to be about five years old. A physical deformity prevented her from walking upright.

But she crawled with surprising speed, slithering across the floor like a snake—SWISH! SWISH!—in a truly bizarre manner.

Xie Ning’s hand trembled as she drew her superpower gun. She closed her eyes for a moment, then raised it.

She aimed for a long time but couldn’t bring herself to do it.

No matter how cold-blooded she was, she couldn’t bring herself to open fire on a group of innocent children.

The snake-like girl scurried to her feet, circled them once, and then crawled away onto a nearby pile of straw.

Seeing that the test subjects had no intention of attacking her, Xie Ning felt even more dejected.

’If they had attacked her, she could have convinced herself that they were no longer human, no different from the Alien Species, and had to be eliminated.’

But now...

These strangely-shaped children paid her no mind, either sitting blankly on the floor or lying on their sides, listlessly rubbing against the ground.

Although eliminating them would be a quick release from their suffering... she just couldn’t bring herself to do it.

Gritting her teeth, Xie Ning pulled off her gas mask, holstered her superpower gun, and walked over.

She reached out and picked up a little boy with fox ears. When he looked up at her with a dazed, innocent expression, Xie Ning simply took out a tether and fastened it to him.

She tethered several of the dazed children in a row. When Xie Ning reached for the snake-like girl, the child’s mouth suddenly flew open, and she let out a hiss like a serpent’s.

Her open mouth revealed two rows of small, sharp teeth. She glared at Xie Ning with large, round eyes that had vertical pupils, baring her fangs.

Xie Ning gave the little girl a light pat on the head. "Hush now, don’t be noisy."

The snake-like girl with the large head seemed to freeze for a moment. Then she pressed against Xie Ning’s palm and rubbed it gently.

Her mutated vertical pupils gradually calmed, and she blinked as she looked up at Xie Ning.

Xie Ning loaded the dozen or so children, big and small, onto a four-wheeled metal cart and pulled them out of the experimental pod.

She didn’t remember how she managed to drag the children downstairs; her heart just felt heavy and constricted.

Back in the first-floor lobby, she came face-to-face with a frantic researcher.

The man was dragging a black suitcase, running in a panic toward the elevator.

When he saw Xie Ning, bundled in her scarf and mask, he froze for a second before bolting away as if his life depended on it.

Xie Ning tied the metal cart to the stair railing and shot after the man like a rabbit bolting from its burrow.

A brutal punch landed squarely on the man’s face, sending his glasses flying.

She was furious. The volcanic rage pent up inside her instantly erupted, directed entirely at the man before her.

Punch after punch, she hammered his head and face mercilessly. Her blows were utterly vicious.

’How could they do it?’

’What was the difference between these monsters who’d lost their basic humanity after the apocalypse and the walking, rotting corpses outside?’

"Stop! Don’t hit me! Stop!" the researcher shrieked in terror.

The suitcase flew to one side, its latches popping open and scattering documents and files all over the floor.

Xie Ning ignored his kneeling, his begging, his terrified screams. She just kept punching his already distorted face.

Even through her thick, fleece-lined gloves, she could feel her own hands trembling.

She punched him again and again, until his teeth came loose and he could only make muffled cries.

Xie Ning dragged him into the small breakroom by the elevator, beat him to death with extreme violence, and then began to absorb the memory fragments from his spirit world.

She didn’t give him a chance to utter a single word.

After absorbing the memory fragments, Xie Ning was enveloped in a grim aura. She walked out of the breakroom, her fists still clenched.

She gathered the scattered documents and stuffed them all back into the black suitcase. As she did, her fingers brushed against something bone-chillingly cold.

It was an ultra-low temperature cryo-storage box, square-shaped and about a meter wide.

The box had a three-row combination lock, suggesting it was something important.

After a moment’s thought, Xie Ning decided to store the cryo-box and the black suitcase separately in her personal Space.

The black suitcase vanished from her hands, but to her surprise, the silver cryo-box couldn’t be stored.

’A living organism?’ Xie Ning was startled.

’I thought it was some special chemical or something. I can’t believe there’s a living creature in this little box.’

’It’s not another mutated creature, is it?’

With that thought, just to be safe, Xie Ning didn’t dare to carelessly stuff the small box into her villa Space, lest some accident wreak havoc on her portable home.

Carrying the cryo-box and a small metal hammer, she walked over to the cart. The group of children, big and small, all looked up at her with the same vacant stares.

Xie Ning glanced at them and sighed inwardly. She picked up the handle of the metal cart and headed for the laboratory’s main entrance.
