An Accidental Military Marriage

Chapter 231: Matchmaking

Chapter 231: Chapter 231: Matchmaking

An Family Village wasn’t large, but it had no shortage of children. A massive, boisterous crowd of them was surrounding Zheng Hongyan, begging for sunflower seeds.

An Family Village was economically backward. Even cheap snacks like sunflower seeds were a treat only enjoyed during holidays.

Jiang Moli sidled over and asked Zheng Hongyan for a handful of seeds as well.

She wandered around, cracking seeds as she went.

Lu Tingting trailed her like a shadow. "Give me some of your seeds."

Jiang Moli flicked a seed husk at Lu Tingting. "You really are an idiot. Asking your own family for things is just moving it from one pocket to another. Go ask an outsider. You don’t even know how to properly take advantage of people."

Lu Tingting shot her a glare and turned to go over to Zheng Hongyan.

Zheng Hongyan was an outsider. Asking her for seeds was equivalent to gaining an advantage.

Jiang Moli continued to wander around by herself.

She wanted to go into the courtyard to see what was for lunch, but her First Aunt was guarding the door like she was a thief, refusing to let her in.

Clearly, she was afraid Jiang Moli would go in and cause trouble.

’Fine, I won’t go in.’

Jiang Moli kept wandering elsewhere, and soon enough, she ended up at her Second Aunt’s house, which was diagonally across the way.

No wonder there were so few adults outside. They were all gathered at Second Aunt’s house.

Besides Second Aunt, Third Aunt, and Fourth Aunt, several unmarried cousins and nieces, along with some other female relatives, were all there. A quick glance suggested there were twenty to thirty people, looking like they were in a meeting.

Jiang Moli stepped inside.

"Mom, what’s all the lively chatter about?"

An Hui glanced at her, her expression not very pleasant.

When the aunts saw her, they all fell silent.

Jiang Moli spat out a seed husk with a "PTOO," then sat down beside An Hui with a grin. "Why’d you all stop talking? Is it something I can’t hear? Surely you weren’t all just gossiping about me, were you?"

Second Aunt snapped irritably, "What nonsense are you spouting? We can barely manage our own affairs. Who has time to gossip about you!"

An Hui looked at her and said with a cryptic tone, "Your cousins and nieces here aren’t married yet. Your aunts want me to help find them good matches in the city."

Fourth Aunt chimed in with a smile, "Hui, our Xiaofeng is a real looker. She’s educated, too. She can do anything—wash clothes, cook, feed the pigs, work the fields. If she could marry into the city thanks to you, her dear aunt, wouldn’t that be a good deed?"

Third Aunt immediately followed, promoting her own youngest daughter and eldest granddaughter, praising them to the high heavens.

"Sister-in-law, they are your own nieces and grandnieces! Whether they live a hard life or a good one for the rest of their days all depends on you!"

Jiang Moli spat out another seed husk with a "Ptooey," and it just so happened to stick to Third Aunt’s clothes.

Third Aunt angrily brushed the husk off. "Spitting seed husks on your elders? Have you no manners or upbringing?"

Jiang Moli just grinned. "Third Aunt, you look like someone who knows all about upbringing. But how come the daughter you raised can’t seem to get married? Let me tell you a hard truth, straight from the heart. If even the bachelors in the village don’t want her, the young men in the city won’t want her either."

Third Aunt’s face contorted with rage. "What bullshit are you spouting?! Who said she can’t get married?!"

Jiang Moli feigned confusion. "If she can get married, then why are you looking for my mom? You can just find a good husband for your daughter yourself."

Thanks to An Hui, An Family Village was quite well-known in the surrounding villages and towns.

The girls of An Family Village had no trouble finding husbands.

But if you could find a son-in-law from the city, who would want one from the countryside?

Failing that, even a soldier from the army would be a good catch.

"The elders are talking! This is none of your business. Get lost!"

Seeing Jiang Moli ruining her plans, Third Aunt’s face darkened as she pulled rank.

Jiang Moli gave a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. "So being an elder gives you the right to be shameless?"

"Who are you calling shameless?"

"Am I wrong? You can’t marry off your own daughter, so you try to force my mom to find a good son-in-law for you. Your scheme is pretty loud and clear. If you can’t handle being a mother, then don’t be one. Just have your daughter adopted by me. She can call me ’Mom,’ and I’ll find a husband for her."

Third Aunt was so furious her face and neck turned red, her eyes looking like she wanted to eat Jiang Moli alive.

Jiang Moli then addressed the other aunts and relatives. "Anyone else have a daughter they can’t marry off? Just come sign up with me. I don’t have any children of my own, so getting a few grown daughters for free would be a huge win for me."

Who would dare to say a word?

These were all families with unmarried young women. If they really got stuck with the reputation of being unwanted and unmarriageable, it would be a classic case of trying to hunt a fox, only to end up getting sprayed.

And so, Jiang Moli’s vicious, cutting words earned her the hatred of a whole group of relatives.

Especially the few cousins and nieces who were dreaming of marrying into the city. Every single one of them found Jiang Moli utterly detestable.

It was one thing not to help them, but she even said they were unmarriageable.

Although First Aunt was busy, she was also keeping a close eye on the house diagonally across the way.

When she saw her sisters-in-law come out looking furious, she quickly called over Fourth Aunt, with whom she was on relatively good terms.

"What did our sister-in-law say? Is she willing to help your Xiaofeng find a husband in the city?"

Fourth Aunt was seething. "Don’t even mention it! It was all going so well, but then that shit-stirring wife of the third son showed up and ruined everything..."

After hearing the whole story, First Aunt gloated and fanned the flames. "I can’t believe it. Your combined ages must be over two hundred, yet you can’t even handle a twenty-year-old girl. How pathetic."

"Eldest Sister-in-law, don’t be a hypocrite. You tried to put her in her place last night, and didn’t you get shut down too?"

First Aunt’s smile vanished.

That shit-stirrer not only ate her chicken and smashed her bowl, but she even incited her grandson’s wife to run back to her parents’ home. She was simply despicable.

She had deliberately told her sisters-in-law what Jiang Moli had said in the kitchen the previous night, encouraging them to pester their sister-in-law about matchmaking.

On one hand, she wanted to cause trouble for her sister-in-law. Who told her not to have a better-behaved daughter-in-law, one who wouldn’t turn her house upside down?

On the other hand, she had her own little scheme.

Her two granddaughters were of marriageable age. If her sister-in-law helped her other nieces, she couldn’t possibly refuse to help her own two grandnieces.

Who could have thought Jiang Moli would ruin it all?

This shit-stirrer was just too damn annoying!

From then on, First Aunt would gossip about Jiang Moli to anyone she met.

She wanted to ruin Jiang Moli’s reputation, but instead, she ended up earning a great deal of Annoyance Value for her. But that’s a story for another time.

「...」

Back at Second Aunt’s house, right in front of Second Aunt and the cousins and nieces, Jiang Moli kicked over a stool.

"Mom, when people get that brazen with you, it means they’ve abandoned all sense of shame. You don’t have to worry about saving face either. When it’s time to get nasty, get nasty."

Then, she grinned at the dumbfounded Second Aunt. "Don’t get me wrong. I’m not targeting you. I’m targeting everyone."

Second Aunt: "..."

The moment An Hui and Jiang Moli left, she immediately shut the courtyard gate and bolted it.

That shit-stirrer was a complete psycho. The stool was just sitting there, and she kicked it over without a second thought.

Lu Tingting had been looking for Jiang Moli for a long time.

Seeing An Hui and Jiang Moli emerge from the house across the way, she hurried up to them. "What were you two doing in there?"

Jiang Moli said, "Just chatting with the aunts. My throat is practically smoking. Good little niece, go pour a cup of water for your third aunt to soothe her throat."

"In your dreams!"

"You’re what I’m dreaming of, so wouldn’t you say my dreams are beautiful?"

Lu Tingting froze for a second, then her face instantly flushed red.
