Chapter 274: Chapter 274: The Brave Get to Enjoy the World First

After finishing his ward rounds, Wen Jingrui returned to his office. A nurse from his department told him that someone was downstairs looking for him.

When he got downstairs, he was surprised to see Qian Ling.

"Doctor Wen, I’m returning this scarf to you. Thank you for your kindness, but I can’t accept a gift I haven’t earned."

He’d had a bit to drink last night and given the scarf away while tipsy.

After sobering up this morning, he’d actually felt it was inappropriate, too.

The scarf was originally bought for Meng Wei. Giving it to Jiang Moli was already rather impulsive, but then giving it to Qian Ling before he left... For one item to pass through the hands of three different women made him seem far too frivolous.

"Sorry to have troubled you."

Just as he took the scarf, a familiar voice sounded from beside him. "Jingrui, what are you two... doing?"

Wen Jingrui and Qian Ling turned their heads in unison.

Meng Wei stood a few steps away, staring at them with a shocked and suspicious gaze. Her expression was filled with disbelief and hurt, as if they had betrayed her.

Qian Ling quickly explained, "Comrade Meng, please don’t misunderstand. I was just returning Doctor Wen’s scarf."

"Why did you have his scarf?"

"Doctor Wen left it behind when we were having dinner last night—oh, but we weren’t alone! Moli, Vice Yang, and the others were there too! It was Moli’s birthday, and we happened to run into Doctor Wen, so we all ate at her house."

After finishing her explanation, Qian Ling let out a long sigh of relief, thinking, ’There’s no way she can misunderstand now.’

But to her surprise, Meng Wei stared at her indignantly. "Don’t take me for a fool! If he left the scarf at Jiang Moli’s house, why are you the one bringing it back?"

Without waiting for Qian Ling to explain, she turned to Wen Jingrui, her face a mask of sorrow. "I know it was wrong of me to stand you up yesterday, but did you have to find a replacement so quickly? Even if we’re breaking up, we should at least do it amicably, right?"

"Comrade Meng, you’ve really misunderstood..."

Qian Ling rushed to explain, but Wen Jingrui cut her off, his voice cool. "Meng Wei, the bouquet of white roses last night was beautiful. It suited you."

Meng Wei’s expression changed slightly.

She had wanted to make a preemptive strike, pinning the blame for their breakup on Wen Jingrui. She never imagined he had actually seen her last night.

"I imagine you must be quite fond of that man from last night. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have canceled our date because of him."

The last of Meng Wei’s hope died, replaced by a wave of despair, fear, and regret.

If word of this got out, not only would she lose both men and end up with nothing, but her reputation would also be utterly ruined.

Her reputation had already taken a hit because of the matter with Lin Jianfeng.

But that was just a matter of character; this, however, was moral corruption. If handled poorly, it could even affect her job.

She knew there were plenty of rivals at the radio station just waiting for a chance to pull her down and take her place.

"Jingrui, I... I..."

Wen Jingrui was well aware that he didn’t have to do anything more than spread the word, and Meng Wei would suffer the consequences of her own actions.

But he wouldn’t stoop to that. He would never take revenge on a woman in such a way.

He looked at Meng Wei calmly. "As you wish. Let’s part amicably. I wish you happiness."

Meng Wei breathed a sigh of relief, muttered an apology, and left in disgrace.

Qian Ling was both embarrassed and shocked.

Even she could tell that Wen Jingrui had been cheated on by Meng Wei.

’How could Meng Wei not want a man as outstanding as Wen Jingrui?’

As if reading her mind, Wen Jingrui gave a wry smile. "Sorry you had to see that. And could you do me a favor? Please don’t tell anyone about what happened today."

Qian Ling nodded. Her sympathy for him made her instinctively try to comfort him:

"Doctor Wen, you’re such an excellent and capable man. I’m sure you’ll meet a wonderful partner someday."

Wen Jingrui smiled faintly. "Let’s hope so."

...

When she got back to the Song and Dance Troupe, Qian Ling told Jiang Moli that Wen Jingrui and Meng Wei had broken up.

However, she kept her promise and didn’t mention the cheating.

Jiang Moli wasn’t surprised at all.

When Wen Jingrui had explained about the rabbit-fur scarf last night, she’d guessed he’d bought it to give to Meng Wei.

The fact that he hadn’t given it to her obviously meant there was a problem between them.

She put an arm around Qian Ling’s shoulders. "Lingling, are you seeing anyone lately?"

Qian Ling shook her head. "No."

"What do you think of Doctor Wen?"

Qian Ling froze for a moment, then a blush rapidly spread across her cheeks.

"Don’t be ridiculous. How could someone as amazing as Doctor Wen ever be interested in me?"

Jiang Moli turned Qian Ling’s face toward her, studying it seriously. "You’re gorgeous, young, you have a sweet voice, and a fantastic figure. He’d be the lucky one if he got to be your boyfriend, you know?"

Qian Ling covered her mouth and giggled.

Even if Jiang Moli was exaggerating, it still made her happy to hear.

Jiang Moli kept her arm around her, speaking in a heartfelt tone. "Instead of waiting for your relatives to set you up with a bunch of duds, you should find someone you actually like. Look, Doctor Wen has the looks, the skills, and the income. Plus, his parents have passed away, so you won’t have to deal with any mother-in-law drama."

"After you get married, all his money will be yours to spend. The apartment his work provides will be just for the two of you. And he even knows to buy his girlfriend a scarf—that shows he’s a romantic and thoughtful person deep down."

Qian Ling wiped the corner of her mouth. "Moli, you’re making my mouth water."

Jiang Moli patted her on the shoulder. "Fortune favors the bold. If you like him, go for it. Don’t worry about if you’ll succeed or not—just snag him first and worry about the rest later. Who knows, maybe he’s blind and will fall for you, right?"

Qian Ling: "..."

...

In the evening, just as Jiang Moli walked through the gates of the Military District Courtyard, she saw Lu Tingting squatting by a flowerbed like a little mushroom.

She walked over. "Hey, what are you doing here?"

"None of your business! It’s not like you own this place!"

Seeing her long face, Jiang Moli reached out and ruffled her hair. "Tell me what’s making you so sad. It’ll cheer me right up."

Lu Tingting slapped her hand away, pulled a jewelry box out of her pocket, and tossed it to her.

Jiang Moli caught the box. Opening it, she was surprised to see a delicate gold necklace inside.

"A gold necklace? For me? It’s not fake, is it?"

Lu Tingting was so infuriated by her string of questions that she nearly went mad. "If you don’t want it, give it back!"

Jiang Moli beamed. "It’s fine, I like it even if it’s fake."

"It’s not fake! The receipt is right there in the box, can’t you look for yourself?"

"I don’t need to look. Even if it’s fake, I’ll treat it like it’s real gold."

Lu Tingting was about to die from sheer frustration.

Jiang Moli lifted the necklace out, then turned her back to Lu Tingting and crouched down.

"Here, help me put it on."

Pouting, Lu Tingting took the gold necklace, wrapped it around Jiang Moli’s neck, and carefully fastened the clasp.

"There!"

Jiang Moli stood up, fingering the necklace. Seeing the adorably proud pout on Lu Tingting’s face, she couldn’t help but lean down, cup her cheeks, and plant a kiss on one of them.

"Thanks, my sweet little niece~"

Lu Tingting froze for three seconds, then her face turned beet red.

"You... you crazy woman! What do you think you’re doing?"

Jiang Moli pinched her cheek. "Your face is so red. That wasn’t your first kiss, was it?"

"None of your business!"

Lu Tingting hopped off the flowerbed and stomped away in a huff.

Jiang Moli smiled and went home.

After hanging up her bag, she went to the bathroom to admire her new necklace in the mirror. She stayed there until Ma Hongmei told her to go to the Chen Family’s home and call An Hui back for dinner.
