The Sea Queen of 1985

Chapter 589: A Profound Understanding

That night, Sister Lian stayed in the same room with Xiao Jing. When the baby wet or soiled its diaper in the middle of the night, Sister Lian was there to help.

The suite Han Xiaoqing was staying in had its own bathroom, so they wouldn’t disturb anyone else at night.

Han Xiaorui offered to stay and help as well, but Han Xiaoqing wouldn’t agree to it.

After all, Han Xiaorui had to work during the day. Han Xiaoqing’s heart ached for her sister and didn’t want her to overexert herself.

A week after Han Xiaoqing was discharged from the hospital, Mrs. Chen and Mr. Chen finally returned to Shencheng.

They went to the Chen family home first, where they learned that Han Xiaoqing was observing her postpartum confinement at her sister’s house. They decided to get over their jet lag before going to visit their daughter-in-law.

“Where is Wenxuan?” Mrs. Chen asked the housekeeper.

The housekeeper replied, “The young master is away on business. He hasn’t been back in a long time.”

Mrs. Chen was taken aback. “He didn’t even come back for the birth of his child?”

“No!” the housekeeper answered. “I had intended to bring the young madam here to recuperate, but her sister was against it and insisted on taking her to her own home.”

Mrs. Chen frowned. “All he thinks about is sacrifice and the country. Why doesn’t he ever think about himself? He can’t even take care of his own wife and child. What’s the point of taking care of anything else?”

“And Xiao Jing is the same. She just lets Wenxuan do as he pleases. Doesn’t she realize that with him gone, she’s the one who has to suffer and bear the brunt of it all?”

Hearing his wife’s nagging, Mr. Chen chuckled and gently tried to placate her. “Alright, that’s enough complaining. I know you’re just worried about them, but you’re being a bit too extreme.”

“Since Wenxuan and Xiao Jing have their ideals, we, as their parents, should support them even if we don’t fully understand.”

Mrs. Chen grumbled, still not truly agreeing with this line of thinking deep down. “I’m just worried sick about them! The family has no need for them to struggle like this!”

With such a large family fortune, their lives could be so much easier, yet they choose to endure hardship.

Mr. Chen had once had a deep conversation with his eldest son and understood him. “We are businessmen. Our primary goal is profit. But Wenxuan and Xiao Jing, from the environment they grew up in to the education they received, were taught to prioritize the country and the collective before the individual.”

“It’s different from what we were exposed to abroad, but it’s precisely this quality that allows Hua Country to grow stronger and stronger. Haven’t you noticed?”

Mrs. Chen thought for a moment. “I was shocked when I heard about the recent high-tech blockades foreign countries have imposed on Hua Country, attempting to disrupt its development.”

“You have to understand, these countries only resort to such measures when they feel threatened. If Hua Country can achieve a breakthrough in this area, then it will be truly powerful.”

Mr. Chen’s voice was grave. “Well… I’m not actually that optimistic. After all, Hua Country’s foundation is too weak. Domestically, there are many people who believe it’s better to buy technology than to build it.”

“Many people even think that by completely submitting to the United States, they can receive American support like Japan and South Korea. But now that the Mao Bear has collapsed, Hua Country’s social system makes it a natural adversary to the West. Where would this ‘complete support’ come from?”

Mrs. Chen nodded. “True. Not unless they accept a United States military presence, like Germany today. Hua Country didn’t agree back then, so why would it agree now?”

Mr. Chen sighed. “Lately, I’ve been studying the collapse of the Mao Bear. With the benefit of hindsight, I feel like I’m starting to understand it all.”

Hearing this, Mrs. Chen grew anxious. “We were in a terrible state when we left back then. We barely survived. You need to be careful.”

Mr. Chen paused in thought. “Look at it from the perspective of historical development, from the standpoint of the entire nation. Think about it carefully.”

“If those steps hadn’t been taken, the country might have collapsed long ago, just like the Mao Bear. We lived through the Republican era, with its fragmentation and warlord factions. Never mind the common folk; even the lives of wealthy people like us were difficult.”

Mrs. Chen didn’t understand and frowned slightly. “But now with the Reform and Opening-Up, everyone is starting to learn from foreign countries!”

Mr. Chen had a much deeper understanding of the situation. He had been inspired by his eldest son and had spent the past year studying it in depth.

“Now, I’ve studied our country’s situation. It’s building its own industrialization, completely independently. How many countries in the world have managed to industrialize on their own?”

“Even during the first thirty years of being blockaded, the country not only launched satellites but also developed strategic weapons like atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs, and intercontinental missiles. It was only after securing this complete autonomy that they began to open up.”

“I’ve studied the industries that were opened up. Many weren’t opened all at once but were liberalized gradually. Furthermore, most of them were sectors that weren’t critical to the national economy and people’s livelihood.”

“When these industries came to Hua Country, they rapidly improved the nation’s manufacturing capabilities. Over the past fifteen years, Hua Country’s industrial development has advanced significantly, proving that this was the right direction.”

“Furthermore, Hua Country has compulsory education, with a literacy rate as high as ninety percent. Outside of the West, only Hua Country has achieved such a high standard for its industrial workforce. Hua Country’s workers are hardworking and resilient, which makes them incredibly competitive.”

After his careful research, Mr. Chen felt it was necessary to increase investment in Hua Country, specifically in non-restricted technology sectors.

It was a vast, emerging market—not just a producer, but a future consumer nation as well.

Mrs. Chen raised an eyebrow. “So what you’re saying is, you want to increase our investments here?”

Mr. Chen nodded. “Yes. Many of my friends back in Germany have already started looking into Hua Country. They’re very interested in the investment policies here.”

“Initially, the products might be sold in Europe and America, but once the income of the people in Hua Country rises, this place will become a massive consumer market in its own right.”

“If even foreigners know this is a great place to invest, it makes no sense for us, as Hua Country people, to pass up such a golden opportunity and not increase our investment!”

Mrs. Chen was silent for a moment. “You’re very confident?”

Mr. Chen nodded. “Yes, very confident. Think about our time in the West and all the business leaders we’ve met. How many of them have a grasp of the big picture? Aren’t they all just thinking about lining their own pockets?”

“But then look at our two children, Wenxuan and Xiao Jing. And look at Xiao Jing’s sister, Han Xiaorui, and Ye Feng’er. What outstanding young people! They constantly live by the principle of improving themselves when they have little, and helping the world when they achieve much.”

“Whether it’s technology, the economy, or anything else, it all ultimately comes down to the people. Now, think about Hua Country’s population, especially the countless people in Wenxuan’s generation. They are the future of this country.”

“When a country has so many outstanding young people who are largely united in their ideals, isn’t that the hope of the nation? I can rack my brain all day, and I still can’t think of a single reason why our country won’t be powerful in the future.”
