Luna Dawson had specifically spent points on the official website to purchase the base’s new combat suits for everyone on the team. After seeing how good they looked on John Jacobs last time, she had been absolutely itching to get them.
The convoy of eleven vehicles had continued toward the pharmaceutical factory for two days. The villages along the highway gradually faded from their line of sight.
Occasionally, sporadic zombies from nearby towns were attracted by the convoy’s commotion and sprinted toward the vehicles, but they were quickly taken care of by Little Sweet Potato.
Luna Dawson distributed plenty of snacks and iced drinks to everyone. Every day, they only needed to spend less than five minutes outside for their combat suits to feel completely soaked. It was simply too muggy and hot. Fortunately, the air conditioning in the vehicles was strong, making the journey much more comfortable.
Miles Dawson tried opening the window to feel the weather outside, but the hot, humid air immediately blasted him in the face. The heat instantly made him howl, “Sis! Is it really thirty-nine degrees? Why is it so hot?!”
Luna Dawson smiled and handed him a chocolate ice cream bar, which instantly coaxed him into a beaming smile. “Good thing we stocked up on plenty of ice cream! Be a good boy and eat; stop howling.”
Driving the vehicle, Aaron Palmer hurriedly hollered, “My beautiful and invincible Goddess Dawson, I want one too! Give me one, please!”
Luna Dawson briskly took out a basket of ice cream and let everyone choose their flavors. Kevin Keane picked up an ice pop and handed it to Aaron Palmer.
“Focus on driving. Just hold it in your mouth and suck on it,” he said.
Blake Blue was earnestly observing the surroundings with binoculars. Rhonda Dawson tore open a pineapple popsicle and handed it to him. Blake Blue usually ate the fewest snacks, so she took the initiative to feed him directly.
“Brother Ian, take a break. Have something to eat before you get back to work.”
Looking at the large pineapple popsicle, Blake Blue chuckled. “Hector likes this flavor too.”
Rhonda Dawson smiled gently. “You two have similar tastes. Hurry up and eat.”
Watching from beside Blake Blue, Kevin Keane couldn’t stand it anymore. He wondered why everyone else was being fed by someone, yet he wasn’t.
“Hey, little boss, pick one for me too.”
Luna Dawson had just unwrapped a hazelnut chocolate ice cream bar and was about to take a bite. Hearing his request, she generously stuffed it directly into his mouth.
Kevin Keane’s face instantly turned red. Seeing this, Blake Blue couldn’t help but find it strange. “Why are you radiating so much heat? Can’t the AC and the ice cream cool you down?”
Luna Dawson immediately chimed in, nodding vigorously. “Yes, exactly! Coach Keane, did you know you’re constantly emitting heat? Last night, when you were eating next to me, I felt like you were about to spontaneously combust.”
Kevin Keane’s body ran extremely hot, like a constantly burning furnace. When he exercised in the courtyard during the winter, his entire body would emit steam. He simply possessed a pure yang constitution.
During dinner yesterday, Luna Dawson had been overwhelmed by the heat radiating from Kevin Keane pressing close to her. Seeing that Kyle Keith was present, she had held her tongue for a long time.
Kevin Keane remained silent, but his ears and cheeks burned bright red.
Luna Dawson narrowed her eyes. “Are you…?”
“No, I’m not!” Kevin Keane hastily denied it, not even waiting for her to finish her sentence.
Aaron Palmer suddenly thought of something, his features twisting with jealousy. “Brother Kevin! Did you awaken another superpower behind our backs?!”
Hearing this, everyone looked at Kevin Keane curiously. It took him a long while to squeeze out a few words. “No, I just have a strong constitution!”
Luna Dawson took out a thermometer. Seeing that his mouth was occupied, she flicked it, pulled open his collar, and stuffed it directly under his armpit. While eating her ice cream, she said, “Let’s take your temperature. You’re a giant furnace. Without AC during meals, I really can’t get too close to you.”
Kevin Keane didn’t make a sound, obediently keeping the thermometer clamped in place. Only after a long while did he give a soft grunt of acknowledgment. He was unhappy, wondering why she wouldn’t just get close to him.
While the people inside the vehicle were busy bantering, Miles Dawson sat in the passenger seat, quietly observing and never joining in. His brow furrowed tighter and tighter until he suddenly spoke in a deep voice. “Sis! Something ahead… seems… a bit strange.”
Kevin Keane immediately picked up the binoculars and looked out through the glass.
The convoy had just entered the urban area from the Decron East highway exit. Only two kilometers ahead, a high-rise residential building appeared as if it had been cleaved in half by some monstrous force.
The upper half of the building had collapsed onto the neighboring structure. Massive concrete blocks and twisted, jutting steel rebars piled up between the two buildings. The surrounding houses had all been affected to some extent, forming a massive expanse of ruins scarred with giant claw marks.
What was even more unsettling was that behind these ruins, the mist swirling within the drizzle grew denser, completely obscuring the city beyond the rubble.
Luna Dawson extended her spiritual power outward, only to find that within Decron’s thick fog, her spiritual power seemed to malfunction, rendering it completely useless!
As the convoy approached, a sudden wave of unease crept up her spine. A large amount of vehicle wreckage was scattered near the ruins—ambulances, police cars, and even several helicopters. They were crumpled and fused together in various twisted postures. Between those wrecks, dark, almost black bloodstains and severed human limbs could be vaguely seen.
The convoy drove off the ramp. The deeper they ventured into Decron, the more horrifying the scenery outside the windows became.
The residential buildings and streets on both sides of the road were covered in gargantuan claw marks. Steel rebars and rubble had been violently ripped apart by these slashes. Indoor furnishings mixed with the severed limbs of humans and animals were laid bare for all to see. It was as if all the living creatures hiding indoors had been dug out and violently smashed to death against the walls and the ground.
As the vehicles became completely submerged in the thick fog, what unfolded before everyone’s eyes was a road leading straight to hell—a slaughterhouse named Decron.
The rain fell incessantly, washing away the bloodstains so that all the accumulated water on the road surface turned a dark crimson, making everyone’s scalp tingle with dread.
The people in the car silently observed this tragic battlefield. Over the six months since the apocalypse began, everyone had seen their fair share of bloody scenes, but the sheer gore before them still left them in profound shock. Even through the car windows, the stench of blood and damp rot managed to pierce accurately into everyone’s nostrils.
The vehicle’s radio crackled to life. Dylan DuPont’s voice sounded somewhat strained. “Due to the area’s electromagnetic pulse, there is a delay in communication wristband transmissions. Everyone, use the vehicular radios and military walkie-talkies to communicate. Let’s keep moving.”
“Roger that.”
The personnel in each vehicle replied. The atmosphere in every car instantly grew oppressive and tense.
Continuing deeper into the dense fog, Luna Dawson’s unease grew ever stronger. Her spiritual power seemed to be completely neutralized by this mist. She picked up the walkie-talkie, intending to contact Dylan DuPont and Kyle Keith.
Kevin Keane immediately noticed her abnormal behavior. “What’s wrong?”
Luna Dawson furrowed her brow, her voice grave. “My Space Perception has failed.”
Hearing this, everyone in the car jerked upright, the hairs on their arms standing on end.
This meant that even a Fourth Order like Luna Dawson was being suppressed in this foggy region!
Luna Dawson kept her voice as steady as possible. This wasn’t a fear of zombies, but rather an instinctive vigilance in the face of a completely unknown and incomprehensible phenomenon.
“Commander Ford, Captain Kessler, have your Spiritual Ability Users found anything?”
After a long moment, Dylan DuPont’s voice came through the walkie-talkie. “BZZZ… Captain Dawson, the Spiritual Ability Users are completely suppressed. Their powers are utterly useless. BZZZ… Everyone, stay vigilant and keep an eye on your surroundings.”
As his voice faded, unease and silence engulfed the entire convoy. The vehicles continued their slow crawl through the dense fog. Aaron Palmer turned off the music inside the car, keeping a constant ear out for any movements outside.
An unknown amount of time passed. Suddenly, the car’s radio emitted an intermittent, static-filled sound that resembled a jammed cassette tape.
“BZZZ… SOS… Abnormal proliferation of mutants in the Walsh Group’s Quarantine Zone Three! SOS… SOS… The laboratory has been completely contaminated… Mutation… Mutation… SOS… I… am… SOS…”
