Chapter 240: Chapter 240: Trial
"Are these tickets enough?" Fu Xiaoxiao looked speechlessly at the salesperson. Did she look like someone who couldn’t produce the tickets?
Seeing Fu Xiaoxiao take out a stack of tickets, the salesperson was a bit stunned.
She hadn’t expected Fu Xiaoxiao to actually pull out so many tickets.
"I’ll cut it now." The salesperson didn’t say much more and silently grabbed the fabric.
Fu Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes at her, thankful that she had exchanged quite a few fabric coupons with everyone before heading out.
Thinking that in a new place, she wanted to get the whole family new outfits. Although she wasn’t afraid of gossip, she had heard that comparisons among children were the most severe.
Lu Lin and Lu Chen, being somewhat sensitive kids, Fu Xiaoxiao felt it was necessary for them to have new clothes to better blend in.
"Comrade, this is your fabric." The salesperson put away her condescension toward Fu Xiaoxiao and spoke respectfully. "If it’s inconvenient to carry, you can leave an address, and we can help deliver it to your home."
"Really? Then please deliver it to my home." Fu Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up. She was worried about how to carry so many items without them being bulky while walking.
"But it costs fifty cents..." The salesperson looked at Fu Xiaoxiao, and Fu Xiaoxiao immediately handed over fifty cents.
"Where is the address?" After collecting the money, the salesperson asked.
Fu Xiaoxiao was taken aback. She hadn’t memorized the address of the compound yet!
At that moment, Qin Shuang came over. "What did you buy?"
"Qin Shuang, do you know the address of the compound?" Fu Xiaoxiao asked Qin Shuang with a smile.
"Oh, you’re having it delivered! Send it to Building 7, Unit 103 of the compound," Qin Shuang told the salesperson, noticing several bolts of fabric on the counter.
Upon hearing it was the compound, the salesperson seemed unsurprised. "Okay."
"Might as well take mine back too!" Zhao Shishi came over, carrying four or five bags. Today, she had a great haul, one of each new item.
"Xiao Mei, didn’t you buy anything?" Qin Shuang looked at Li Xiaomei and asked confusedly. "I saw you really liked that piece; why didn’t you buy it?"
Li Xiaomei was stunned for a moment, her eyes dimmed, and she shook her head. "I decided not to buy it; it doesn’t quite seem suitable for me."
Seeing her say that, Zhao Shishi and Qin Shuang shrugged, saying no more.
"Fu Xiaoxiao, do you still want to buy anything else? We’ve finished our shopping; tell us what you want, and we can take you there." Qin Shuang and the rest had accomplished their errands for the day and were just accompanying Fu Xiaoxiao.
"Can I check out the toy section?" Fu Xiaoxiao rubbed the heads of Lu Lin and Lu Chen.
Lu Chen’s eyes lit up upon hearing "toy section."
The three looked at Lu Lin and Lu Chen, then turned to Fu Xiaoxiao. "Let’s go! It’s right ahead."
Qin Shuang led Fu Xiaoxiao to the toy section with a smile. Fu Xiaoxiao saw an array of toys, even models of steam trains, dolls, and even building blocks, puzzles, and chessboards.
They all looked quite fun.
"What do you want? You can each choose a toy," Fu Xiaoxiao said, smiling at Lu Chen and Lu Lin.
Lu Chen was visibly torn, looking at the vast assortment of toys; he wanted them all.
Lu Lin glanced at Fu Xiaoxiao and directly pointed at the chessboard.
"Mom, I want that chess set."
"What about you?" Fu Xiaoxiao nodded, and the salesperson, perceptively, took out the chess set.
"Mom... I want those building blocks, and those puzzles, and also like that checkers game..." Lu Chen looked at Fu Xiaoxiao with a face full of dilemma.
Zhao Shishi and the others exchanged glances, thinking if Fu Xiaoxiao wouldn’t give in, Lu Chen would certainly throw a fit, and ultimately, Fu Xiaoxiao would still choose to compromise.
They’d seen it so often they were indifferent.
"No, you can’t." Fu Xiaoxiao shook her head in refusal, "It’s agreed you can only choose one."
The three were anticipating Lu Chen’s tantrum, but Lu Chen merely pouted, stared at the three toys for a while, and then chose checkers.
"Mom, I want the checkers game!"
"Alright." Fu Xiaoxiao patted his head and smiled, instructing the salesperson to wrap it up.
"Hehe." Having gotten the toy he wanted, Lu Chen’s grin was unstoppable.
In what seemed a very ordinary scene, Qin Shuang began to doubt.
"Wait a second, you just refused him. Why didn’t he throw a tantrum?" Qin Shuang felt the scene was different from what it usually played out in her mind.
Every time her nephew couldn’t get what he wanted, he would start crying and throwing a fit, and eventually either her sister-in-law or her mother would give in.
With Fu Xiaoxiao, it seemed rejection came so easily!
This defied her understanding.
"Why... because it was agreed upon?" Fu Xiaoxiao blinked.
What was there to cry about promises made?
"That’s not right! My brother’s kids also make agreements, but in the end, they still buy a whole lot extra..." Qin Shuang shook her head and looked at Zhao Shishi.
Zhao Shishi nodded. "It’s not just her nephew; my cousin is the same way. Whatever they want, they must have."
"Boys might have higher needs, I suppose. It’s all or nothing with them," Li Xiaomei glanced at them, whispering.
Just as the two finished speaking, they noticed a scene exactly as they’d described playing out between another mother and son buying toys.
"I don’t care! I want that one! I want that one!"
"Be good, don’t fuss. We agreed to just buy the metal frog."
"I don’t want the metal frog anymore; I want those building blocks!"
"No, Mom didn’t bring enough money today. Excuse me, just the metal frog will do."
"Waaah..."
Upon the mother’s refusal, the child immediately entered tantrum mode, lying on the ground, wailing.
It was nothing new to everyone, but Fu Xiaoxiao frowned at the child.
"Stop crying, be good. How about some candy when we get home?" The mother looked utterly embarrassed, unsure how to handle the child.
Seeing the child crying uncontrollably despite attempts to console him, she eventually promised to buy it.
"Alright, stop crying; now I’ll buy it for you, okay? You’re a living god." The mother promised to buy, and the child immediately got up, with no trace of his previous tantrum.
"See? Normally, it should be like this..." Zhao Shishi gestured towards Fu Xiaoxiao to observe.
"This isn’t right at all! Isn’t this indulgence?" Fu Xiaoxiao frowned.
What’s normal about that? It seems outright abnormal.
Fu Xiaoxiao looked at Lu Lin and Lu Chen. "Do you also think that’s right?"
Lu Lin shook his head.
Lu Chen had just seen the child’s behavior too, glanced at the seriousness in Fu Xiaoxiao’s eyes, and immediately shook his head.
"That’s wrong."
The three stared at Lu Chen, as Qin Shuang curiously asked, "You only say that because your mom’s here, right?"
"If you could have three toys, do you still think you’d only choose one? A clever kid would surely pick all three, right?" Zhao Shishi chuckled.
"I’m fine with just this one!" Lu Chen shook his head, clutching his checkers.
"Why do I not believe that? You must be saying that because your mom’s here." Qin Shuang and Zhao Shishi exchanged a glance. "Here’s the deal! I’ll pay for it; pick any two toys, consider them our gift for meeting you!"
