Chapter 269: Chapter 267: Didn’t Forget the Dream This Time
Su Miaoyi was covered in injuries, so taking a shower was out of the question.
So she slowly wiped herself down with a towel.
By the time she finished washing up and came out of the bathroom, she was exhausted and covered in sweat again.
She lowered the AC by two degrees. Then, gripping the remote control with both hands like a gun, she started aiming it around the room.
She aimed at the clock on the wall, then at the coat rack by the door, and then at the ceiling light. "PEW! PEW!"
"Are you crazy?" the voice in her head said.
Su Miaoyi lowered the remote. "Soon, I’ll have a gun of my own."
"Such ambition."
"Then I dare you not to use it," Su Miaoyi said.
"I’ll use it anyway."
"Let’s get one thing straight," Su Miaoyi said sternly. "No killing anyone."
The voice in her head said nothing.
"Answer me!" Su Miaoyi said.
"Mm."
Hearing a satisfactory answer, Su Miaoyi nodded and went back to the bedroom to sleep.
That night, a heavy rain began to fall, accompanied by lightning and thunder.
A deafening clap of thunder suddenly rang out.
The sound was so loud it made Su Miaoyi open her eyes. She glanced at the window just as a bolt of lightning split the night sky.
She had been fast asleep, and the flash made her blink dazedly.
She clicked her tongue in annoyance. She reached for the remote on the nightstand, wanting to draw the curtains tight. After fumbling for a moment and failing to find it, she simply let her hand rest on the nightstand and fell back asleep.
After a few more flashes of lightning, she just nuzzled her head into the pillow and fell soundly asleep again.
But she hadn’t been asleep for long before she started dreaming again.
Subconsciously, she knew she was dreaming, and she knew she had had this dream several times before.
She also knew that this was the first time she had clearly seen the man’s face in the dream.
"It’s raining." The man walked closer, holding the umbrella over her.
She looked at the pond full of lotus flowers in front of her.
The rain was light, dripping onto the lotus leaves, which only stirred slightly.
"Let’s go back," the man said.
She didn’t move.
The man didn’t move either, standing beside her holding the umbrella.
The two of them were silent for a long time.
"Are you used to the servants?" the man asked.
She still didn’t speak.
The man looked at her. "Then I’ll replace them with a new batch."
"No need," she finally said.
Just saying those two words made her feel a little tired.
Her body felt utterly exhausted. She was dizzy, a little nauseous, and her mind kept going blank.
In short, her whole body felt wrong. Nothing felt right.
"The rain is getting heavier. Let’s go back." The man took her arm, turning her around to walk back.
She followed him for a few steps before feeling exhausted and shaking his hand off.
He looked at her.
"You’re walking too fast. I can’t keep up," she said with a frown, her voice filled with irritation. She then continued forward slowly on her own.
The man caught up to her, walking beside her and holding the umbrella.
Once inside the room, she sat down on a chair.
"Feeling awful?" the man asked.
She looked down, silent for a moment, before meeting his gaze. "Are you concerned about me?"
The man didn’t speak.
She said, "You picked me up from a casino. I have a worthless life. Whether I live or die depends on a single word from you. If you don’t like me, then kill me. Why torture me?"
"Still pretending after all this time?" the man said. "Le Yan, how long do you plan on using this Su Miaoyi identity? I told you, you were exposed the moment I saw you. So much time has passed; it’s getting a little dull that you still won’t admit it."
"I have no idea what you’re talking about," she said. "My name is Su Miaoyi. It’s always been Su Miaoyi. I’m from Dian City. I’ve lived in Dian City my whole life. I don’t know who this ’Le someone’ you’re talking about is!"
She was too weak to even shout.
"Just kill me," she said. "I’m not the person you’re talking about, and I can’t become the assassin you want me to be. I don’t understand any of what you’re saying. You’ve got the wrong person. I have no value to you. Stop wasting your time and kill me."
The man looked at her for a moment, then tossed a knife onto the nearby table. "If you want to die, there are plenty of ways to do it. But can you bear to die? You haven’t achieved your purpose for coming to my side; your mission isn’t complete. Do you really want to die? Trying to trick me into believing you’re Su Miaoyi by threatening to kill yourself—do you think I’d fall for that? The knife is right here. If you really want to die, end it yourself."
She met the man’s gaze for a few seconds, then looked at the knife on the table.
Her hand reached for the knife, and she grasped it.
Then she slashed at her own wrist.
The first cut slid across her wrist, drawing blood. The wound was shallow. Immediately after, she cut a second time.
Her movements, from gripping the knife to making the cut, were clumsy, as if she were holding a blade for the first time, unsure of where to even strike.
Blood dripped down. Just as she was about to cut a third time, the man snatched the knife from her hand and threw it away. He then grabbed her bleeding wrist. "You lunatic! You think I’ll believe you just because you do this? What’s so great about Jinghai that you’d sell your life for it!"
The scene in the dream shifted. She was lying in a small, dim room, with the man standing beside her. "If you want to visit this place less often, just cooperate a little. Forget that obsession in your head. Don’t resist with your consciousness, or you’ll only suffer more."
She struggled, but she was bound by restraints and could only twitch slightly.
"It hurts too much. I don’t want to. Let me go," she said.
"Be good," the man said beside her. "As long as you forget those things, you won’t be in pain anymore."
"Let me go!"
The man stopped talking and stepped back.
Another man on the other side of her attached several wired objects to her head.
She struggled, pleading, "Let me go!"
But her thoughts were a desperate chant.
’Qin Leyan, can’t forget, can’t forget.’
’They’re still waiting for news back in Jinghai. It was so hard to get here. Even if I’m exposed, as long as I’m not dead, there’s a way. There’s always a way.’
’Can’t forget. I absolutely can’t forget.’
’I am Qin Leyan. I am a criminal police officer.’
’My current identity is Su Miaoyi, from Dian City, working at a casino, bought and brought back...’
The light on the instrument beside her suddenly lit up.
An electric current bored into her brain. She suddenly clenched her fists, her entire body tensing up...
The immense pain in her head woke Su Miaoyi from the dream.
She woke with a violent jolt and leaned over the side of the bed, dry-heaving twice.
She still felt like throwing up, so she got out of bed. But when she stood on the floor, her legs gave out for a second.
She reacted quickly and grabbed the nightstand for support, but her right knee still hit the floor.
She took a moment to recover, then quickly got up and rushed to the bathroom to vomit...
After vomiting, she flushed the toilet and then stood in front of the sink to wash her face.
She stared at her ghastly white face, thinking it looked like someone had slapped a coat of wall primer on it.
"Are you okay?" the voice in her head asked her.
"I think I must have eaten something bad," Su Miaoyi said. "It must have been that chicken soup."
The voice in her head fell silent.
’This is clearly a signal from her brain, and she’s blaming the chicken soup,’ it thought. ’Blaming it just because it didn’t taste good.’
"Not tasting good is the original sin," Su Miaoyi said. After a pause, she added, "I didn’t forget the dream this time. And I’ve had it over and over again, but this is the only time I’ve remembered it."
