Chapter 196: Chapter 140: She Wants to Follow Her Young Uncle’s Example
"My name is Si Jingping," the old dean introduced himself amicably, glancing at Professor Gan. "This is Professor Gan. We’re..."
He was cut off by Shu Yao’s abrupt question: "From the Imperial University Military Academy? What do you want with me?"
Convinced she was playing dumb, Professor Gan was quite displeased. "Isn’t it because you rejected our special recruitment offer? The old dean and I had no choice but to come to Imperial High School to find you ourselves!"
Shu Yao sounded utterly uninterested. "Since you already know my answer, why did you bother making the trip?"
Professor Gan was left speechless and frustrated.
Shu Yao gave the can of quick-dry paint a few shakes, then, PSSSHHH, began spraying the tail of the Flying Machine.
A faint but visible scratch was completely covered by the black paint.
If he hadn’t seen the video of her taking down a Mecha bare-handed in the abandoned district and developed an appreciation for her talent, Professor Gan never would have tolerated her disrespectful attitude toward the old dean. Even so, he still couldn’t stand the girl’s arrogance.
The old dean, Si Jingping, however, didn’t seem to mind.
Young people with talent were allowed to have a bit of a temper and personality. What he couldn’t stand were the untalented youths who flaunted their ignorance and incompetence as if it were some kind of asset, and he never indulged their bad habits.
Like an elder caring for a junior, the old dean asked with a kind, smiling tone, "Miss Shu, the unified examination is just around the corner. Have you thought about your plans? Do you have any goals?"
Standing to the side, Professor Gan felt a great sense of injustice.
’Is this still the same old dean I know?’
When had the old dean ever treated the teachers and students of the Military Academy with such a gentle expression? When had he ever spoken to them in such a warm tone?
Wasn’t he always lecturing them with a cold, stern face, his tone harsh and angry, furious that they weren’t living up to their potential?
Shu Yao said dismissively, "Are you my dad? Why should I tell you any of this?"
Professor Gan’s eyes widened, looking like he was about to cough up blood from anger. Just as he was about to explode, he heard the old dean chuckle.
He looked over in disbelief.
But the old dean didn’t spare him a single glance, not even from the corner of his eye.
"Let’s just chat. Maybe you’ll change your mind."
"Change my mind? Impossible." Shu Yao moved the ladder to the other side of the fuselage and continued spraying.
"It sounds like you already have an unshakable goal," the old dean said with a smile. "Could you tell me which university you’re planning to apply to?"
"Imperial University," Shu Yao said without hesitation. "The Agricultural College."
The old dean was first pleased, then stunned.
Professor Gan’s reaction was even more exaggerated. "HAHAHAHA—Countless students dream of getting into our Imperial University Military Academy! If you don’t accept our special recruitment, with your grades and GPA, forget the Imperial Agricultural College—not even a third-rate university would take you!"
His tone was harsh, but what he said was true.
"Just because other people see your Military Academy as their goal, does that mean I have to be like them? I’m the kind of person who likes a challenge. If I don’t get in this year, I’ll try again next year. If I still don’t get in next year, I’ll try the year after that.
As long as I raise my grades and get the required GPA, I’m sure I’ll eventually get into Imperial University’s Agricultural College. I wouldn’t mind spending twenty years trying. After all, I’m not like you old guys. I’m young. I can afford to wait."
After speaking, Shu Yao shot him a sidelong glance.
’Bring it on. Let’s hurt each other.’
Professor Gan: "..." ’Am I old? I’m only in my forties, for crying out loud!’
"If you like a challenge, then come to the Military Academy! There are so many students and teachers at the Military Academy you can challenge!" The old dean’s voice held a coaxing tone. "If you do well, you can even represent the school and the Federation in competitions in the Outer Star System, fighting the Insect Race! Being a female warrior, a Female Commander—that’s way more interesting than going to the Outer Star System to farm and be a pioneer!"
The old dean grew more and more excited as he spoke.
Shu Yao’s dark eyes lit up. "So if I get into the Agricultural College, I can still go to the Outer Star System to farm and be a pioneer? Interesting, very interesting!"
The old dean and Professor Gan: "..."
So, after all the old dean’s enthusiastic persuasion, not only had he failed to sway Shu Yao, he had actually strengthened her original resolve.
Seeing them suddenly fall silent, Shu Yao took advantage of her higher elevation on the ladder to shoot them a look.
’Are you guys even up to the task?’
The old dean’s voice was earnest, but it sounded a bit weak. "Farming and pioneering aren’t that easy. That’s probably not your strong suit, is it...?"
Shu Yao: "Like I said, I like a challenge."
"Those wretched members of the Insect Race will go after crops when they can’t find meat, so whatever you manage to grow might just get eaten! All that hard work wasted for nothing!" ’Fighting insects is way more fun.’
