Chapter 198: Chapter 140: She Wants to Be Like Her Youngest Maternal Uncle
The old dean couldn’t wait another moment. Wait a few more years!?
"That’s a great idea!" the old dean said urgently to Professor Gan. "Let’s go. We’ll head to the Agricultural College and find Song!"
Professor Gan’s eyes went wide.
"Old Dean, I was just saying that to test her. You actually took it seriously! Haven’t you realized this girl is playing you? She knows perfectly well that she can’t get into the Agricultural College with her qualifications, so she’s deliberately trying to get our attention! Her goal is to manipulate us into going to the Agricultural College and getting her a spot! She’s been putting on an act for us this whole time!"
The old dean froze, then slowly turned to look at Shu Yao, the realization dawning on him.
"I’m serious about applying to the Agricultural College. Whether you showed up or not doesn’t change my plans," Shu Yao said, sticking her tongue out slightly.
Even though he realized Shu Yao was setting a trap, Professor Gan had to admit it would be a shame to give up on someone so clear-headed, brave, resourceful, and cunning.
Professor Gan said, "You could also enroll in our Military Academy first and find a chance to pursue a double major with the Agricultural College."
The old dean nodded eagerly.
"Nope." Shu Yao was as stubborn as a child. "I’m only applying to your university’s Agricultural College. When it’s time to fill out my application, I’m going to list the Imperial University Agricultural College for every single choice! No one can stop me! Hmph!"
"Old Dean, you see! I told you she was showing her true colors!" Professor Gan was like a child tattling to a teacher.
The old dean wasn’t angry at all. Instead, he pointed at Shu Yao and chided with a laugh:
"You little fox!"
Professor Gan was utterly astonished. "Old Dean, she’s scheming against us. Aren’t you angry?"
"She’s going to be a Female Commander one day. How could she succeed without some cunning and strategic thinking!" the old dean said admiringly.
Professor Gan took a deep breath. ’I don’t want to be a professor anymore!’
’How can the old dean be so biased!’
"It’s just a spot in the Agricultural College, right? I’ll go get it for you." The old dean’s tone grew a bit more serious. "But, Miss Shu, we have a deal. Once you’re in Imperial University, you have to come to my Military Academy. I don’t care where you rank it as a major, you *have* to enroll!"
"We’ll see," Shu Yao replied nonchalantly.
"What kind of attitude is that!" Professor Gan was furious. "Get down here. I’m going to test your spiritual power!"
Testing spiritual power was one part of the Military Academy’s special recruitment exam.
PSSST... PSSST... Shu Yao finished spraying a bit of paint on the machine’s body, climbed down from the ladder, took off her gloves, and accepted the object Professor Gan handed her.
It was semicircular, reddish, and hollow in the middle. The curved side was slightly thicker, with four grooves for fingers on the inside and one on the outside, like a handle.
It looked a lot like the hand straps on the buses she used to ride.
"What is this thing?"
"It’s a portable sensory device for measuring spiritual power," Professor Gan explained, a little impatiently. "Squeeze this part as hard as you can for ten seconds, and a rating will automatically appear on the screen on the other side."
"Can it handle it?" After listening, Shu Yao expressed her doubt that the device could last ten seconds in her hand. "I’m talking about the device."
"Well, it can definitely figure out if *you* can handle it!" Professor Gan fought the urge to roll his eyes.
Shu Yao glanced at the repaired Flying Machine. "I just finished a big project. I’m not really in top form right now."
Professor Gan sneered. "Don’t worry. No matter the result, the old dean and I won’t laugh at you!"
"Just try not to cry," Shu Yao said, gripping the sensory device’s handle.
Professor Gan said, "Didn’t you drink your nutrient solution? Squeeze! Use all your strength!"
"You’re the one who told me to."
Shu Yao squeezed down hard.
BANG!
Before it could even start its rating, she had crushed the device to pieces!
Professor Gan was dumbfounded. The old dean, standing to the side, was startled for a moment before a look of absolute ecstasy flashed in his eyes.
Professor Gan howled, "That thing is very expensive!"
"You told me to use all my strength. Who knew it was so flimsy," Shu Yao said, feigning innocence.
The old dean asked, pleasantly surprised, "How much of your strength did you just use?"
Shu Yao replied, "Less than thirty percent, I’d say."
Professor Gan’s eye twitched. "..."
’Is this woman a monster?! If less than thirty percent of her strength is that terrifying, what would happen if she went all out!?’
’And she wasn’t even in top form!!’
Shu Yao handed the broken device back to him. Seeing his pained expression, she figured the thing probably really wasn’t cheap.
"Do I need to pay for it? If so, you should compensate me for my emotional distress first." Shu Yao clutched her chest, putting on a half-hearted performance of someone who’d just had a scare. "When it exploded just now, it almost scared the piss out of me!"
Professor Gan swallowed the "Of course you have to pay for it!" that was on the tip of his tongue. His mouth twitched violently as he said:
"N-No... you don’t have to pay for it! I suddenly understand where you got the guts to call the Austin Family Master a sick cat in front of His Majesty!"
"It certainly didn’t come from you."
Professor Gan gritted his teeth.
’If any student at the Military Academy dared to talk back to me like that, I would have kicked them into the Outer Star System long ago!’
Seeing the Flying Machine behind Shu Yao, Professor Gan’s eyes suddenly lit up.
"What is that!?"
"A Flying Machine."
"Of course I know it’s a Flying Machine!" Professor Gan stared at the little-bee-shaped Flying Machine, the light in his eyes growing brighter. "They’re both Flying Machines, so why is yours so adorable?!"
"What do you think I’ve been so busy with all this time?"
Professor Gan said, "I’ll trade you my Flying Machine for yours!"
"No deal. It’s a gift for my son." Shu Yao grinned. "Starting to realize I have quite a few talents, aren’t you?"
Professor Gan snorted dismissively, but his eyes honestly darted back and forth over the little bee Flying Machine. His attention had been elsewhere before, and he regretted not getting a better look.
"So this is the kind of person Professor Gan is," Shu Yao said with a laugh.
Professor Gan’s face tightened. "What kind of person am I?!"
"I didn’t mean anything by it. It’s just that my impression of you is a little different from the rumors."
Shu Yao had heard that Professor Gan was as explosive as a powder keg. It turned out the legendary hot-tempered instructor also had a thing for cute stuff.
Shu Yao opened her hand. In her palm was a lifelike, needle-felted Chi cat.
Professor Gan couldn’t tear his gaze away. He really did like it! He liked it so much he didn’t even wonder how the handmade figurine had appeared in Shu Yao’s hand.
Shu Yao said, "It’s yours. A greeting gift."
Professor Gan straightened his expression and adopted a lofty posture. "Ahem... In that case, I’ll let the matter of you breaking the device slide!"
"I’ve suddenly changed my mind." ’So petty,’ she thought.
Not giving her a chance to take it back, Professor Gan quickly snatched the adorable felted Chi cat and held it carefully in his own hands.
Shu Yao said suddenly, "I have more."
Professor Gan looked over, his gaze fervent.
Shu Yao gave a mischievous smile. "I’ll give you another one the next time I see you, Professor Gan."
Professor Gan froze for a second, then gritted his teeth.
"How despicable! Do you think you can bribe me like this?! That I’ll go to the Agricultural College and help you get a spot?!" Professor Gan shouted, though his words didn’t match his feelings. "Do you think I care about your little trinkets!?"
"If you don’t care about it, then give it back," Shu Yao said, holding out her hand.
Professor Gan put his hands, along with the felt toy, behind his back. He puffed out his chest and declared righteously, "How can you take back something you’ve already given away! That’s no way to behave!"
Seeing this scene, the old dean was grinning from ear to ear.
"Let’s go. We’ll go find Song."
Professor Gan looked longingly at the little bee Flying Machine.
The old dean waved a hand in front of his face. "Don’t be so reluctant to leave it. Once we get this girl into Imperial University, we’ll have her fix up that little wreck of yours into a design you like!"
Only then did Professor Gan tear his eyes away. But when he thought of that stubborn old coot from the Agricultural College, Song, his mood soured.
"Sigh, Dean Song won’t necessarily give in..."
"Where there’s a will, there’s a way!" Shu Yao cheered them on.
Professor Gan glanced at her, feeling exasperated. Cradling the small toy, he thought, ’Is it really worth it to go calling in favors at the Agricultural College for a little thing like this...’
