Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Don’t Worry, I Know What I’m Doing
Sitting in the driver’s seat of his very first car, Zhang Yan felt a surge of excitement.
He reached toward the center console to open the sunroof, but his hand brushed against something smooth and silky. He gave it a slight squeeze—soft yet firm. It was undeniably the leg of a dancer.
"Ah, sorry about that," Zhang Yan said. "I’m not familiar with this car yet, so I misjudged the distance and reached too far."
"It’s okay," Xiaoyan replied, her face blushing slightly. However, she didn’t move her leg away, maintaining her peculiar posture. She had heard that this was how one was supposed to sit in the passenger seat of a luxury car; she just never expected it was for this reason.
Ready to go, Zhang Yan started the engine. But the moment the car began to move, a twinge of regret hit him. He shouldn’t have been so overconfident. He had gotten his driver’s license four years ago and hadn’t touched a steering wheel since. His brain insisted he remembered how to drive, but his hands and feet clearly had a mind of their own.
The Guoya shot forward like a bullet, pinning them both against the backrests of their seats.
"Z-Zhang Yan, slow down!" Xiaoyan cried out. In this critical moment, she had completely forgotten about using proper honorifics.
Naturally, Zhang Yan couldn’t afford to show weakness. Feigning composure, he stubbornly replied, "Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."
*It’s too fast, just step on the brake!* He thought, "Wait, which pedal did I just step on?"
The Guoya barreled straight ahead, picking up more and more speed. It rapidly approached the wall, looking as though it would smash right into it.
"Y-you’re stepping on the gas!"
"Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."
At this point, Zhang Yan’s brain had practically short-circuited. Fortunately, he still remembered how to steer, though it looked like he wouldn’t be able to make the turn in time and would end up side-swiping the wall anyway.
Xiaoyan’s heart leaped into her throat. Watching the wall outside the window inch closer and closer, a wave of immense terror rose from the depths of her soul.
She thought, "Is this the end of my life? There are still so many things I want to buy, so many places I want to visit, and I haven’t even experienced a man yet!"
"AHHHHH!"
Just as her mind and body wailed in despair, Zhang Yan—whether through a stroke of divine inspiration or pure, blind luck—slammed on the brakes and spun the steering wheel like a madman!
SCREECH!
After a piercing sound of tires grinding against the pavement, the car miraculously carved a perfect arc, executing a beautiful drift right along the wall. Having just brushed shoulders with death, a strange sensation erupted from the deepest part of her body and instantly spread through her veins. Xiaoyan didn’t know what this unprecedented feeling was, but she subconsciously squeezed her legs together.
"Wow, your driving skills are amazing! And you lied to me, saying you were rusty!" Having just survived a disaster, Xiaoyan was in a state of extreme exhilaration, practically shouting her words.
To this, Zhang Yan simply gave his same nonchalant response. "Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."
In reality, his mind was completely numb. He had thoroughly scared himself. Even though he trusted the luxury car’s safety features, the feeling of hurtling toward certain death was enough to send his adrenaline skyrocketing.
In his flustered, frantic maneuvering, he accidentally let go of the steering wheel and brake, only to stomp on the gas pedal again. The car continued its straight, accelerating charge. No matter how large the venue was, it had limits, and without slowing down in the slightest, the Guoya quickly barreled toward the opposite end.
"AHH!!! Go, go, go!!" Xiaoyan was over-excited to the point of screaming herself hoarse. She genuinely believed that everything was under Zhang Yan’s absolute control.
However, Zhang Yan was suffering in silence. What had just happened was entirely a subconscious physical reaction; he didn’t even know how he had drifted. He was so tense that he still hadn’t lifted his foot off the gas.
The car moved faster and faster. At this speed, there was a real risk of severe injury or worse. Even if they survived, the car would most likely be totaled. Was his newly acquired luxury car going to be destroyed in the blink of an eye?
The fear of impending death always manages to draw out unexpected potential. Staring at the rapidly approaching wall, Zhang Yan cranked the steering wheel once again.
Perhaps another miracle occurred, or perhaps Zhang Yan truly possessed a hidden talent for racing. The Guoya glided past the wall with another gorgeous drift. Watching the wall outside the window—so close they seemed destined to crash—Xiaoyan became utterly captivated by this feeling of dancing on a knife’s edge, a shiver running down her spine. She turned her head to look at the expressionless Zhang Yan, thinking that at this very moment, he was simply the most handsome man in the world!
DING!
[Detected that a high-quality female (Xiaoyan) is secretly in love with you. Do you accept her feelings?]
Naturally, Zhang Yan had no time to pay attention to whatever nonsense Brother Tongzi was dinging about. All of his focus was entirely devoted to driving.
After surviving two near-death experiences in a row, he finally regained his senses. Slowly easing off the gas, the car’s speed began to drop.
"Zhang Yan~ Let’s do that a few more times. I haven’t had enough yet!" Xiaoyan’s voice had become sickeningly sweet, taking on a coquettish tone.
However, Zhang Yan still didn’t have the luxury of noticing this shift in her attitude. "Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."
As feeling gradually returned to his stiff limbs, Zhang Yan slowly recalled the driving lessons he had once practiced. He managed to clumsily perform a standard driving test routine, finally backing the car into its starting spot.
Expecting more thrilling surprises, Xiaoyan was a bit disappointed. Deep down, she was faintly addicted to the rush she had just felt and desperately wanted to experience it again. Once the car came to a halt, she rolled down the window for some fresh air, hoping to soothe her excited nerves.
But suddenly, she felt a damp coolness. Her expression drastically changed. "Z-Zhang Yan, I need to use the restroom."
Zhang Yan didn’t say a word; he merely nodded. In truth, he wanted to go too, but he couldn’t even stand up.
It wasn’t until Xiaoyan was far away that he took several deep breaths. His entire body felt weak, and waves of delayed fear washed over him. This small interlude largely diverted his attention, and he quickly recovered, opening the door and stepping out of the car.
Zhang Xiang hurriedly came over to greet him. When it came to being terrified, he hadn’t suffered any less than the two people in the car. If Zhang Yan—who clearly had an extraordinary background—actually had an accident on his property, ruining his own career would be the best-case scenario. Earlier, he had kept his eyes glued to Zhang Yan’s car, ready to hit dial on the three-digit emergency number he had already typed into his phone. Every time the Guoya executed those elegant, wall-hugging drifts, he would break out in a cold sweat, cursing internally.
"Mr. Zhang! I had no idea you were such an exceptional driver! I was incredibly tense watching you, sweating bullets, but you didn’t even flinch. Truly, heroes emerge from the..."
He rambled off a bunch of flattery before suddenly shifting his tone. "However, the venue in our little place here really isn’t up to standard. It can’t let you unleash even a tenth of your skills. How about you consider finding a better place to practice your driving in the future, Mr. Zhang?"
Maintaining his expressionless poker face, Zhang Yan said, "Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."
