Chapter 410: Chapter 328: Feathered Serpent Evil God
In the pre-dawn sky, dark as ink, a giant red serpent crackled with lightning as it circled back and forth.
Its HISSS echoed through the sky, piercing the ears like a power drill and causing intense discomfort.
"The Feathered Serpent God must have sensed the change in our faith," the High Priest said, looking up at the sky. "That’s why it woke from its hibernation."
"Faith? That thing can sense what’s in your heart?" While urging his subordinates to leave more quickly, Shire looked up at the enraged Feathered Serpent Evil God. Suddenly, he remembered something. "You said before that the Kingdom drives out a batch of goblins every so often. What’s the maximum number of goblins allowed in this Kingdom?"
"Five thousand."
"In other words, this long, flying worm can only sense the hearts of five thousand goblins," Shire said, frowning. "But didn’t you leave two thousand goblins behind?"
"Look at them," the High Priest said, pointing at the fleeing goblins. "If you hadn’t set up those cauldrons, their faith probably wouldn’t have wavered so quickly."
Shire looked toward the goblins of the Feathered Serpent Kingdom. Even as they fled, they clutched their wooden bowls tightly. When the hot Forest Soup scalded their skin, they merely grimaced and ran on with gritted teeth, terrified of spilling a single drop. Meanwhile, the ones who had been in line but hadn’t gotten any soup yet were now crowded around the cauldrons. They held up their wooden bowls, and even though they were no longer in line, they hadn’t overturned the cauldrons. Instead, they were just shouting unintelligibly, desperate to get the food being served from the ladle.
Bai Mao hadn’t left. Shire had specifically instructed her when the operation began: if anything went wrong, drop everything and run. But she was still standing before the bubbling cauldron, rapidly scooping up ladles of Forest Soup and slamming them into the wooden bowls.
The large iron ladle was a blur in her hands, but Bai Mao didn’t slow down, muttering, "Here’s yours. You’re next. Take it and go! Next bowl!"
’She’s such a handful.’ Shire sighed and shook his head.
"These cauldrons made the faith of the goblins in those long lines waver. A change of this magnitude was bound to startle the slumbering Feathered Serpent God." The High Priest gripped his Bone Staff and struck it heavily on the ground. "I should have known it would come to this."
As he spoke, he waved his hand and said anxiously, "Leader, you need to leave, quickly! I’ll lead the other goblins to hold off the Feathered Serpent God."
"Just you guys?" Shire let out a short, incredulous laugh. "One bolt of lightning, and it’s all over for you."
With that, he pulled the Hand Crossbow from the small of his back. "Red Eyes, go get Caocao. You and he will take some men and hold this position. The rest of you, retreat immediately!"
Then, Shire turned and sprinted toward the center of the battlefield, pulling the wooden-framed mirror off his back as he went.
... ...
In the sky, the writhing Feathered Serpent kept blasting its own body with lightning. A dozen or so Skeleton Warriors clung desperately to the giant serpent’s scales. They stabbed their weapons into the gaps between the red scales, holding on for dear life to avoid being thrown off.
CRACKLE! A flash of lightning shot past, and several Skeleton Warriors were blown to smithereens, plummeting to the ground below.
The remaining Skeleton Warriors, however, plunged their weapons deep into the Feathered Serpent’s body and twisted them relentlessly. Dark red blood trickled from the gaps between its scales, driving the Feathered Serpent God into an even more frantic frenzy.
It whipped its tail furiously in the air, trying to shake off these "clinging bones," but to little effect. Four Skeleton Warriors remained, clinging stubbornly to its body.
Suddenly, the Feathered Serpent Evil God seemed to have an idea. It beat the wings on its flanks and plummeted toward the ground. CRASH! A huge cloud of dust billowed up.
Then, the Feathered Serpent God began to roll its body back and forth on the ground, intending to crush the remaining Skeleton Warriors.
A continuous CRUNCHING and CRASHING sound rang out. Through the dust, the Feathered Serpent Evil God’s body looked like a massive, fallen tree trunk. The surrounding ruins and broken walls collapsed as it smashed into them.
Soon enough, the remaining Skeleton Warriors were ground into shattered bone.
With the annoying skeletons dealt with, the Feathered Serpent Evil God slowly coiled its body. It raised its head, its tongue flicking in and out, its eyes locked on the goblins frantically fleeing in the distance.
"Foolish goblins. I protected you, and you dare to betray me," the resentful voice of the Feathered Serpent God echoed. Its eyes crackled with lightning as it spread its wings again, looking as if it would launch back into the sky at any moment.
"You only ever used them." A voice called out from the distance, drawing the Feathered Serpent God’s attention.
It was a tiny goblin in ridiculous clothes, holding what looked like a "toy."
"You are not one of my faithful," the Feathered Serpent God said, glancing at Shire in the distance. "Interesting. To think these goblins have learned to conspire with outsiders."
"I’m the goblin who blasphemed against you," Shire said, spreading his hands with a smile. "So? Surprise, surprise!"
"It was you?" The Feathered Serpent God raised its head. Then, without another word, it unleashed a blast of lightning toward Shire.
The lightning spread like a multi-pronged fork, blanketing the ground in the blink of an eye. Dust and rubble filled the air with a sharp CRACKLING sound. The smell of something scorched spread, chilling one to the bone.
Shire stumbled back a few steps. He had noted the range of the Feathered Serpent God’s lightning from the beginning and had positioned himself far away, but the destructive power of the forked lightning still left him shaken.
