Chapter 517: Chapter 517: Healing
After two round trips to Mi Mountain, and after ordering Ah Er to go back to the mud pit to recapture a Blood Toad...
The Blood Pills were finally refined.
Bai Mo sent a letter to the Foreign Affairs Hall.
A few days after receiving the letter, the manager in green robes paid a visit.
As soon as he arrived outside the courtyard, he saw Yuan Chu sitting imposingly on a stone bench in the center, completely motionless.
The manager in green robes coughed once. Yuan Chu quickly cocked his ear to listen, then turned his head and called out:
"Junior Brother Bai, you have a visitor!"
Bai Mo knew it was the manager in green robes, so he took out the thirty-six Blood Pills and handed them over.
"These were refined according to the sequence for the great Blood Pill array. The thirty-six Blood Pills must be placed in fixed positions to maximize their power."
The manager in green robes nodded, accepted the Blood Pills, and added:
"A few days ago, when some disciples were handing over their command talismans at the Foreign Affairs Hall, they mentioned what you did in the black-iron jail, Junior Brother."
"They sounded quite disapproving, but I paid them no mind."
Bai Mo was unconcerned.
"It was just a few tricks. It’s much faster and more effective than the usual methods of extracting essence blood."
"The prisoners in the jail weren’t particularly against it either. There’s really nothing to make a fuss about."
The manager in green robes nodded.
"That’s true."
With that, he prepared to head over to the neighbor, Zhu Tong.
"To sacrifice that mutated great cultivator’s corpse, the thirty-six Blood Pill great array alone isn’t enough. It needs to be coordinated with more than ten other great arrays."
"When the time comes, we will seal the heavens and earth, and only with the combined power of the arrays can we sacrifice the great cultivator’s corpse."
Zhu Tong was the sect’s Array Master, so there was no escaping these tasks.
’No wonder I haven’t seen that guy come by for a visit in ages. He probably couldn’t get away, forced to work through the night to meet deadlines.’
Bai Mo received the Spirit Stones from the manager in green robes, casually returned to his room, and put them away. He then took out a dustpan full of Pills.
Carrying the Pills, he came before Yuan Chu, picked one out, and gave it to him.
"Senior Brother, try this Pill."
Yuan Chu swallowed the Pill. A moment later, his eyes began to emit smoke, and a faint red glow flowed within them.
He blinked instinctively. Two intersecting beams of red light shot from his eyes, transforming into small snakes.
The two small snakes intertwined as they moved, slicing off a corner of the stone basin Ah Er used for grinding ore.
Ah Er was dumbfounded.
It ran over, steadied the stone basin, and saw that the cut side had only a thin sliver of stone skin remaining.
If it actually tried to grind ore now, the basin would likely shatter under the force.
’I’ll just add this damage to his medical bill.’ After mentally noting this, Ah Er prepared to go into the woods to select another stone and grind it into a new basin.
Bai Mo, however, said, "Senior Brother, your foundation is solid. To have such an accomplishment right after reaching Core Formation is truly admirable."
Yuan Chu, unaware of what had just happened, just chuckled lightly.
"It’s nothing. Just the result of my diligent studies and hard cultivation."
Bai Mo then took out another Pill and had Yuan Chu swallow it, preparing to use him to test the medicine.
Yuan Chu smiled. "Junior Brother, your Alchemy Skill has improved again. I feel like the medicinal power is building up severely inside me. I have endless energy during the day and can’t sleep at night."
"Is this really not a problem?"
Bai Mo reassured him.
"With me here, nothing will go wrong."
"I haven’t found the root of your illness yet, Senior Brother, so we can’t stop the Pills for even a day."
...
The next day, Yuan Chu, who hadn’t slept all night and had only just drifted off into a daze at dawn, was woken by several loud, grating shrieks.
He rose woodenly, steadied himself against the wall as he went outside, and called out in the direction of the CHINK, CHINK, CHINK of stone being worked:
"What’s going on?"
Ah Er scratched its head, then saw Bai Mo also walk out of his room.
It put down the chisel it was using to carve the stone and gestured while calling out a few times to Bai Mo.
Only then did Bai Mo learn the truth.
It was the Blood Toad they had released before—the one that had been captured twice. It had grown three to five times larger than its kin, and the patterns on its back were more beautiful.
Ah Er had released it, but somehow, it had found its way back again.
It was barely larger than a fist, but its croak was incredibly loud, enough to shake the heavens.
Bai Mo took a look and told Ah Er to throw it even farther away.
"This is a creation of the Alchemy Dao. Its original nature as a living creature has been altered, making it unpredictable."
"Release it far away and let it fend for itself."
The Blood Toad is a relatively common creation of the Alchemy Dao. It is simple to make, but it demands a high level of skill from its creator.
These kinds of things don’t have long lifespans; most of them die when left in the wild.
But the one before him had undergone a much more drastic transformation than its peers. It might have a chance to survive and continue its bloodline.
Bai Mo had learned this craft back in Immortal Arrival City, but the Demon Beasts in the Celestial Barrier Mountain range were too ferocious to be captured and modified.
Now, with vast stretches of mountain forests right outside, the conditions were perfect.
Ah Er grabbed the Blood Toad and left.
Bai Mo fed Yuan Chu another Pill, added another entry to his medical bill, and then received a letter from Immortal Arrival City.
The contents mainly concerned Lanshan and his group’s activities after entering the mountains.
They had indeed found the river valley marked on the topographical map provided by the sect.
The river valley was rarely visited. Now, having made their way there, Lanshan and his group had done some searching and found quite a few things.
Among them were several objects engraved with small characters.
These items were a novelty in the city and had sparked another wave of excitement, their value skyrocketing.
Lanshan seized the opportunity to make a huge windfall.
As the story of their deeds spread, more and more Cultivators ventured into the mountains, hoping to find ancient treasures lost in the Celestial Barrier Mountain range.
Many such letters arrived, until one day.
Wei An said in his letter that the beast hordes in the Celestial Barrier Mountain range were rampaging, seemingly startled by something.
The Cultivators who had entered the mountains faced a great calamity. Fortunately, they had scouted out places of refuge in advance and thus avoided major casualties.
Counting the days, Bai Mo guessed that the sect had finally made its move on the mutated great cultivator’s corpse. The aftershocks were still enough to disturb the beasts’ slumber.
Sure enough, news came back from the sect’s front line.
The Sect Disciples launched a surprise attack, with more than ten great arrays activating simultaneously.
They had intended to sacrifice the target in an instant, leaving not a trace behind.
But in the end, the target’s bones were too tough. The ritual failed to fully activate; only its flesh and blood were stripped away, leaving the skeleton to fall back in place.
His neighbor, Zhu Tong, bore partial responsibility for this.
Apparently, a minor detail in one of the arrays hadn’t been drawn correctly, causing it to fail to produce its intended effect.
The man came over and vented his frustrations to Bai Mo.
"Junior Brother Bai, I can’t live like this anymore! Every few days, someone is finding fault with my work..."
He had his own difficulties. When rushing a job, no one could guarantee that the arrays they drew were completely flawless.
The sect hadn’t punished him too severely, merely revoking some of his previous benefits.
After complaining to Bai Mo for a long time, he suddenly noticed Yuan Chu sitting upright in the courtyard.
"Huh? Who’s this?"
Bai Mo explained Yuan Chu’s identity, and Zhu Tong clicked his tongue.
"Someone from Divine Dao Mountain, huh? You don’t see them in this state very often. ’If you walk by the river long enough, you’re bound to get your shoes wet...’"
"I bet it’ll take a ton of effort to cure him, won’t it?"
He expressed his sympathy for Yuan Chu’s plight.
After a moment of sympathy, Zhu Tong’s mood improved considerably, and he took his leave.
Bai Mo, in turn, comforted Yuan Chu, whose expression had turned grim.
"Don’t worry, Senior Brother. I’ve already found the source of your ailment."
