Chapter 1299: A Source of Anger

Chapter 1299: A Source of Anger

Furthermore, using the excuse of bidding on the Transforming Rebirth’s Embrace, Dagraen could meet with Izroth, who he must have predicted would call over Vexpela the moment he brought up the Dragon-Level VIP status. After all, it was something only a handful of people knew certain details about and only a fool would choose to remain ignorant during an important business deal. This allowed Dagraen to meet with Vexpela without rousing any suspicion.

Simultaneously, it also granted someone on Vexpela’s side a Dragon-Level VIP status in the Golden Dragon Association. After receiving it, even the Head of the Golden Dragon Association himself could not act carelessly. This alone would act as enough of a deterrent in protecting Vexpela if anything happened to him.

However, after reading the flow of Izroth’s interaction with the Kroma family and seeing Hyrell, Dagraen must have adjusted his plans.

’To have let everything flow so naturally while also maintaining a solid grasp on everything that occurred and adjusting along the way—this old man must have been a nightmare for his enemies to confront. That aside... It’s a rough fate that she has been dealt. Since she is one of my people now, I will make sure that those who have wronged her pay an appropriate price.’

"...My father... Does he know the truth about my mother’s death...?" Vexpela asked with a shaking voice.

In truth, Vexpela already knew the answer to that question in her heart. She knew that such a heavy secret could not have been kept under wraps without her father’s influence. And, if he had planned on punishing them for their wrongdoings, it would have already happened many years ago. However, there was still a small part of Vexpela that wanted to hold out hope that her father was somehow unaware of everything that transpired.

"Hmph, how could that man not know? Just thinking back to that day causes my blood to boil from anger..!" Dagraen said as he was interrupted by a fit of harsh coughs.

A cup materialized in Baalthazar’s hand. It was filled with a purple liquid mixed in with specks of diced herbs. He waited until Dagraen’s coughing fit ceased before he handed the cup to him.

Dagraen’s hands trembled as he consumed all the liquid within the cup before handing it back over to Baalthazar as he released a long sigh.

Vexpela slowly stood to her feet as she wiped the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand. She looked at Dagraen with a gaze full of hatred and anger.

"Why didn’t you help her? Did the great Impassable Golden Dragon enjoy sitting back and watching as my mother was driven to her death? Even it was a year later... Five years later... Did you ever try to right the injustice my mother faced? Don’t you dare tell me it was because of a promise!" Vexpela asked coldly as she stormed over angrily toward Dagraen.

Balthaazar immediately positioned himself in front of Dagraen in a protective manner.

"This...!" Out of nowhere, Balthaazar’s entire body froze. And, the more he tried to move, the tighter it felt that something was squeezing around his entire body.

"Sit still—while I’m being polite." Hyrell said as she casually waved her index finger to the right.

With this simple action, Balthaazar was forcibly moved aside out of Vexpela’s path.

’Oh? As expected for someone who has reached the pinnacle of Formation Masters. When did she set up that magic formation?’

Balthaazar looked on in disbelief. He was someone who had stepped into the primary stage of the legendary realm and was only one step away from entering the late stage of the legendary realm. In terms of combat prowess, he could even compete with those who had just entered the late stage of the legendary realm. Yet, he was being suppressed by the person before him as if it were no different from breathing for them.

The aura around Balthaazar began to surge as his muscles bulged up and the private room started to shake.

"Balthaazar, that’s enough." Dagraen said calmly.

Balthaazar retracted his aura as he furrowed his brows. Now that Dagraen had spoken up, he had no choice but to stay his hand.

Vexpela stopped directly in front of Dagraen with a darkened expression.

"While I did not play a direct part in what happened with your mother, it is true that I chose to remain still and keep everything a secret all these years. If claiming the life of this old man will wash away a portion of your anger, I don’t mind accepting my judgement. All I ask is that you wait until I tell you everything you need to know." Dagraen said unhurriedly.

Vexpela clenched her fists tightly and said coldly, "...I will listen to everything you have to say. What I choose to do after that—I will decide when that time comes."

In truth, Vexpela knew deep in her mind that the source of her anger was not Dagraen. It was true that he might have been able to save her mother if he truly put his mind to it. However, it was unrealistic to expect him to risk everything for the sake someone he held no deep relationship with. Furthermore, based on his actions and the information he revealed earlier, it was probably thanks to him interfering in the shadows that she was able to keep her life all these years.

She knew all of this, but Vexpela was overflowing with anger and Dagraen just happened to be the only person she could direct her immediate rage toward—despite how unreasonable it may have seemed.

"As I mentioned before, your mother was a brilliant woman. How she managed to end up with someone like your father, still until this day, remains a mystery to me. But, it was due to her beauty and mind that your father became infatuated with your mother. Seeing your mother’s brilliance and your father’s infatuation, the other wives, except the timid third wife, felt threatened by her existence. From the moment your mother appeared, they had become an afterthought in your father’s mind." Dagraen explained.

He the continued, "A couple years passed and your mother came to be with child. With their positions already threatened, the other wives chose to ally themselves. As for your father—during those years, he faced combined pressure from the families his first, second, fourth and fifth wives. Sensing the way events were unfolding, when your mother was close to giving birth to you, she sought me out. At the time, I had already retired and distanced myself from the politics of the Golden Dragon Association. However, even as she was about to bring a new life into the world, your mother was quite convincing. We made a promise—no, I suppose it was more akin to a deal than a promise."

"A promise to ensure my life and keep the cause of her death a secret from me unless I showed enough potential to become the next Head of the Golden Dragon Association." Vexpela said with a sharp gaze.

"Yes, it is precisely as you say." Dagraen responded.

"...Go on." Vexpela uttered.

"A few days after that promise was made, your mother gave birth to you. That same day, your mother passed away. The official reason was complications during childbirth; however, the truth is that the maid who was supposed to look after you that day had run away with you. Your mother received a note to take a carriage to Darzhan Forest without telling anyone. Otherwise, your life would be forfeit. By the time it was found out that both of you were missing, it was too late." Dagraen said regretfully.
