Chapter 4677: The Burden Of First
Evelynn also couldn’t say anything.
As members of the Davis Family, they all followed Davis’s teachings. The children were particularly made to recite the Ten Commandments every week in their childhood.
It was literally in the Ten Commandments that he had established, which they had to follow to the best of their ability in order to maintain unity and peace of mind.
[You shall try to endure insults that are not true as you will accept compliments that are not true— with a humble face that’s dismissive.]
[You shall not be overly righteous or willfully evil— stay in between the lines and remain smart enough to keep your horizons clear of mist at all times.]
[Spare lives as much as you can. You shall only commit murder for the sake of the family— not to be abused or used against the family.]
The fourth, fifth, and seventh commandments guarded them from becoming the villains they despise. If they started killing people for personal or ridiculous reasons, then they would just become what they hated.
Hence, she knew Davis warned Azariel since he had become a bit unreasonable and unhinged, going as far as to kill people without checking if they deserved to be killed or even maintain a standing towards their family, the most recent example being Ralaza Heavenshade and her brother, who almost fell to her twin children.
Hence, she couldn’t momentarily retort. She understood doing these things would require temperance and being unfair to their own self, as giving time to an opponent would end up giving them the advantage more or less.
“Sigh…”
A deep sigh escaped Davis’s mouth, causing Azariel and Evelynn to be stunned.
“My son… to think you have had such worries in your heart and soul. It seems like I have been harsh on you.”
Davis landed on the ground as he stood by Evelynn’s side.
Azariel trembled while holding his arm at the stump. His expression increasingly changed, his cheeks turned red as though he wanted to kill himself. He wanted to maintain a ‘tough’ and ‘rowdy’ image in front of his father, but it had been shattered, causing him to grit his teeth.
Evelynn gazed at Davis, wondering if he had already taken care of the matter he went to deal with or if he had always remained here, waiting to ambush the danger and had preemptively revealed himself because of Azariel’s troubles.
Either way, she was glad to see him still safe.
Davis turned to look at Evelynn, “Azariel is right.”
“He must make haste. I cannot treat him like a greenhorn, nor can I protect him since he is destined to go out by himself to chart his own path. He is not devoid of his own Will, and he chose a path that demands ruthless combat and a strong sense of self that will not be lost in the myriad of poisons he practiced with.”
“If I continue to keep him with me, he might not become a true expert. It would be immensely challenging for him if he kept fighting under my umbrella. It would be like battling within his comfort zone, knowing his father could save him any time. Hence, when danger truly befalls, he fears that he would have to pay a steep price to compensate for the weak deficiencies he might have in the future. Therefore, he practices pain endurance like I once trained, which is commendable.”
Davis finished his speech, making Evelynn speechless as she pleaded in her eyes to make him say otherwise.
“But son, who said that I don’t flinch in pain when I sever my arm to trade injuries?” Davis returned his gaze to Azariel, chuckling, “The trick is to ignore it and not completely endure it. Otherwise, your body will not even react to pleasure, much less pain. You will become a walking corpse.”
“Ignore it…?” Azariel uttered confusedly.
“Indeed.” Davis nodded, “Just imagine that when your arm severs, you are pushing all the pain elsewhere, other than your body. It’s easier said than done, but it would work for a second or two before the pain engulfs you. However, by that time, you would’ve traded blows with the opponent and won. If you master Illusion Laws, you can trick your soul into thinking that the arm is still there, or you have been gifted the blessing of no pain. There are many ways to tackle it. I passively use Enigmatic Heart Laws to forget the emotion of pain temporarily in my severed arm. Find your own.”
“…” Azariel was stunned, “Find my own…”
He repeated his father’s words, trying to search through his memories for some ideas.
Davis didn’t wait, “But you’re really overreaching with wanting to surpass me. That’s not possible. Choose some other goal, perhaps not your mother, either, since we are all powerful Divergents. Even surpassing your mother will be difficult for you unless you gain the bloodline of a Paragon Magical Beast.”
“I know…” Azariel said, his heart clenching, “But I don’t want to give up. Otherwise…”
“Of course, you can never give up.” Davis chortled, “By chasing us on our backs, you would only grow more powerful. I’m saying don’t be disillusioned when you are unable to reach us, and become ruthless and evil. Your haste that gripped you previously was because you feared that you would never be able to reach us. This whispers in your head from your vengeful bloodline demanded that you make sacrifices out of everyone else to get stronger, starting with strangers, before it could get to your siblings. Otherwise, you would’ve been perfectly composed.”
“…” Azariel’s expression froze. The next second, he smiled wryly, “Father, you’re too strong and also capable of assessing the emotions of others without difficulty. You’re truly…”
He sighed, once again feeling the reverence that he had felt for his father in his childhood from the bottom of his heart.
“Hmm. I’m using Enigmatic Heart Laws to assess your mentality and provide advise like a therapist. Can’t have my first son turn into a power-hungry maniac. It’s a fairly common template in any family. Well, Reselius Zenflame is one such example, hungry for power because he could not surpass his father, Zenflame. I won’t let you become like that!”
Davis pointed at Azariel and argued. He then walked towards him and gave him a bear hug, causing Azariel to freeze, but he didn’t resist.
Davis patted Azariel’s back with a heartening gaze and stepped back while still holding his shoulders.
“You are destined for greatness. You will become the most powerful supreme genius apart from Divergents. I don’t have any doubt about that. If I die, I want you to protect your mothers and siblings while I do something about reviving myself. Don’t you ever worry, but like yourself, your little siblings might also try to become stronger using sacrifices that would make them end up feeling regretful. Watch out for them.”
“I will… father.” Azariel firmly nodded.
He then wryly smiled, “But poison isn’t really suited for protecting people. How about I be the family’s assassin or a frontal assault expert?”
“Both. You can be both and still protect your family.”
“…” Azariel really wanted to punch his father.
Evelynn’s voice echoed at this moment, “Azariel, your father is called Dead End in the world of assassins. It was said that anyone who is targeted by him will face the end of their life to no avail.”
Azariel’s expression lit up as he heard his mother’s prideful voice.
‘I made up the name though…’ Davis inwardly laughed before he nodded, “Who said assassins can’t protect their family? My first venture into the outside world was being an assassin. I joined assassin organizations and protected my parents and even your aunt Clara by targeting those assassins who wanted to target them. We were royalty, after all. There was a steep price posted on our heads.”
Azariel grew increasingly fond of the story, never having heard of it before.
“I think… I think I’ll join the assassin organization that targeted us during your marriage to Mother Lea. Of course, not now, but eventually…”
“Good.” Davis nodded, but his expression darkened, “Don’t bring your sister with you.”
“I wouldn’t dare!” Azariel threw his arms up and ran away as though he didn’t want to hear a lecture again.
Seeing Azariel flee, Davis and Evelynn smiled.
“Thank you~” She said.
“What’s there to thank? He’s our son, the first son. The burden he is carrying is naturally different from the others and it is something only he could feel the potential weight of. I had missed it, thinking there’s still more time to grow. However, he matured earlier. Regardless, it’s my responsibility as his father to show him the right way, no matter his age. We’re eternally young, after all.”
Davis winked at her, causing her shoulders to tremble with a suppressed laugh.
“So what happened while I was away? I took down the danger, so the level of vigilance can be downgraded, but still better to be on the lookout for a while.”
“Understood.” Evelynn gracefully nodded, adopting the posture of a subordinate rather than a wife.
In this place, she was well aware she needed to maintain her vigilance so that everyone could remain alive and leave safely in the end. However, now that Davis was here and was asking about what had happened while he was away, she didn’t hide anything as she briefed him as the first wife, wishing that everything would go to his advantage.
After hearing, Davis couldn’t help but frown, “Frostrose wants to maintain the status quo?”
“Indeed.” Evelynn’s lips curled, “She’s one peculiar phoenix, wanting to maintain an illicit relationship that escapes the eyes of other sisters. It goes against the eighth commandment, to not commit adultery. If they do so, the victim will have the right to execute the adulterer. Naturally, no one is going to have a problem with you since these commandments don’t affect you. You’re the one who made them for others.”
“Besides, I know that a few of them already have an inkling about this matter, but I’m worried that it would create problems for Frostrose. Most of the harem wouldn’t like for you to have such a relationship behind their backs. If anything, they would prefer for you to be more open to them.”
Hearing his first wife’s honest opinion, Davis nodded, contemplating for a few seconds.
