Chapter 804
Bear-san Talking to Mane-san Part 1
I didn’t think that there would be a magic circle drawn on the connection between the magic stone and the wand.
“So, what about the ring or bracelet?” (Yuna)
“It’s the same for them as well.” (Mane)
So the magic stone itself wasn’t exactly the medium.
“Some magic circles can be drawn directly on the magic stone, but special ink was required for that.” (Mane)
It was true that a special kind of ink was needed to draw on magic stones.
It’s like how a normal pencil wouldn’t work on glass, and a water-based pen would only smudge or leave a faint mark on it.
I heard somewhere that you could draw on real diamonds with an oil-based pen, but not on fake ones.
Thinking about it that way, you might need different inks to draw a magic circle, depending on where you were going to draw it.
“So the magic circle mainly assists in controlling the flow of magic power, right?” (Yuna)
“Yes. Most magic circles are for controlling magic power. However, there are also magic circles that increase the speed of activation or the strength of the spell.” (Mane)
Mane-san told me.
“Some people who are good at controlling magic use wands that increase the speed and power of magic.” (Mane)
Indeed, in games, there were weapons that increased attack power, some improved dexterity, and so on.
They could be used to make up for your weaknesses or to push your strengths further. Of course, there were always trade-offs that we had to consider.
“What about the magic stones themselves?” (Yuna)
“They basically work the same way as the magic circles attached to them. I think they amplify the effect of the magic circles, making it easier to gather magic power, and reduce the amount of magic power required to activate magic or even as a source of magic power.” (Mane)
So, to sum it up, they were used to reduce the amount of magic power consumed, as an amplifier, switch or like a battery depending on need.
Maybe magic stones were the reason why magic tools were so easy to use.
Even people who couldn’t use magic could still use magic tools.
“I wonder if Yuna-chan’s gloves function like a wand?” (Ellelaura)
Ellelaura-san looked at the Bear Puppets.
“You could say that it’s similar.” (Yuna)
I’d never checked, but it was possible a magic circle had been sewn inside with thread or something.
“But they don’t have magic stones, right?” (Ellelaura)
Ellelaura-san asked as she held on to one of my Bear Puppets.
“Soft.” (Ellelaura)
“It might also have been made with magic-laden thread. But that sort of troublesome method isn’t common.” (Mane)
True enough. Turning magic stones into thread and then weaving them into gloves would be a lot of work, as Mane-san said.
I have no idea what God was thinking when He made this bear equipment.
It must be just God’s hobby.
“I’d like to research them.” (Mane)
Mane-san stared intently at my bear puppets.
“I won’t give them to you.” (Yuna)
Because my bear puppets were non-transferable, I could only hold them and show them to others, but no one else could take them away from me.
Mane-san looked disappointed.
“So, regarding this blue magic flower, what effect does it have?” (Yuna)
I asked, looking at the pressed flowers.
I wanted to steer the conversation away from my bear puppets.
“When you draw a magic circle with ink made from this flower, increase in the speed, power, and magic control will be higher compared to the ink we normally use,” (Mane)
“Does it really make that much of a difference?” (Yuna)
“It’s not as drastic as doubling or tripling the effect. Still, the improvements have been proven in experiments. Everyone wants to increase their magic speed, power, and control, even if only a little. As fatigue increases, concentration decreases, and magic control, power, and activation speed also decrease. Being able to make up for that even a little is a big deal. Even if it’s just a small difference.” (Mane)
She had a point. In battle, the outcome could hinge on a tiny difference in speed or strength.
In games, I’d lost plenty of times because my opponent was just a little faster than me, or because they had silver of stamina left.
Also, I’d often wished that I was a little faster or had a little more attacking power.
On the other hand, I was happy when I won by a hair’s breadth.
“It can also be used in magic tools, with the same effect. That’s why researchers are eager for it.” (Mane)
I see, so it had many uses.
Just from hearing about it, I understood why they wanted it. And why they had called me here.
I also understood why there was no urgency. That explained why they didn’t ask me to come right away.
“There was an area you passed by before you came to this room, right? In that area, there is an effect that increases your speed and allows you to carry a lot of heavy objects. The flower has many uses. But still… to find it on a moving island…” (Mane)
Mane-san pondered.
“I doubt the island will return for a few years at least.” (Yuna)
“We’ll just have to ask the fishermen of Mileela to notify the Adventurer’s Guild the moment they spot it again.” (Ellelaura)
Ellelaura-san’s tone was tinged with regret.
“But there’s one problem. The moving island has strong ocean currents, so ships can’t get close.” (Yuna)
“So, how did Yuna-chan get to that island?” (Ellelaura)
“…Well…” (Yuna)
I hesitated for a moment before answering.
Well, Noa and Shia already knew about it, so it wasn’t exactly a secret.
“I rode on Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear.” (Yuna)
“What? What’s Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear?” (Mane)
“Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear are the names of Yuna-chan’s summoned bears.” (Ellelaura)
Ellelaura-san explained in my place.
“I want to see the summoned bears.” (Mane)
I glanced around the room.
Books, plants, ores, and what looked like magic tools were lying around everywhere.
“It might be too cramped to summon them here.” (Yuna)
I could call out their cub versions, but then it would be hard to explain how I rode them across the sea.
“Then let’s clean up.” (Mane)
At Mane-san’s words, the three of us cleared enough space.
Once the area was open, I summoned Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear.
“Swaying Bear, Hugging Bear, it’s been a while.” (Ellelaura)
“Kyuuuuh”
Ellelaura-san hugged Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear tightly.
“Bears… Seriously…” (Mane)
Mane-san looked at Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear curiously.
“I rode on Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear, crossing the strong ocean currents to the island.” (Yuna)
I didn’t bother mentioning that the bears could swim or even run across the sea. Some details were better left unsaid.
“A bear summon and a bear costume. You really like bears, don’t you?” (Mane)
This question was always a problem for me.
I didn’t hate bears, but I’d grown to love them more because of Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear.
But just because I liked bears didn’t mean that it was the reason why I was dressed as a bear. That was what I wanted to say.
“Well, if we have magicians, we can probably deal with the strong ocean currents.” (Mane)
I wonder if that would be possible.
If they could temporarily suppress the ocean currents, I think they could land.
I didn’t know what would happen if the Targui started moving, though.
“A moving island… I never imagined such a thing existed. If it circles the world, it may carry plants no one’s ever seen before. Fascinating.” (Mane)
Even with her childish face, she had the look of a researcher.
“Let’s think about that later.” (Ellelaura)
Actually, I could reach the island easily with the Bear Transfer Gate, so I felt a little guilty about not being able to offer that option.
Well, it wasn’t a flower that was needed for a dangerous situation, so I could let them deal with it on their own.
If anything, what worried me more was them knowing the secret that the moving island was actually the Targui. Well, I didn’t really own that island creature. It also wouldn’t return to Mileela for years. Only then would I think about what to do if it arrived.
“So Ellelaura, what about that matter?” (Mane)
That matter?
“As expected, it would be difficult to move knights and court magicians for personal reasons.” (Ellelaura)
Apparently, just those two words were enough for Ellelaura-san to understand what Mane-san wanted to say and answer accordingly.
“I guess I’ll have to ask an adventurer again this time.” (Mane)
Mane-san sighed, clearly troubled.
Seeing Mane-san like that, Ellelaura-san looked at me.
Ellelaura-san’s face showed that she had an idea.
“What if you ask Yuna-chan? Yuna-chan is a skilled adventurer, so I’m sure she’ll be able to protect Mane-sama.” (Ellelaura)
“She’s skilled?” (Mane)
Mane-san looked surprised at Ellelaura-san’s words.
I was also surprised by the sudden suggestion.
“Even though she’s dressed like a cute bear, Yuna-chan is an excellent adventurer.” (Ellelaura)
Mane-san eyed me with clear doubt.
“You do have those mysterious bear summons, at least.” (Mane)
“Yuna-chan herself is strong. She even defeated Lord Rutum.” (Ellelaura)
“Lord Rutum!?” (Mane)
Mane-san looked even more shocked by Ellelaura-san’s words.
But… who was Lord Rutum again? I was sure I’d heard that name before.
“I heard that he lost to a female student and was forced to resign as the leader of the knights.” (Mane)
“The female student who fought against him was Yuna-chan.” (Ellelaura)
“Eh, is that true?” (Yuna)
Mane-san looked at me with an even more surprised expression on her face.
“Um, who is Lord Rutum?” (Yuna)
“He was the leader of the knights. You dueled him during the school festival.” (Ellelaura)
“…Ah.” (Yuna)
Right, now I remembered.
“I’m pretty sure he’s the one who tried to marry Shia off to his son.” (Yuna)
“Yes, that man was Lord Rutum.” (Ellelaura)
That did happen.
During the school festival, I’d fought two knights.
I’d run into one of them again when I escorted Shia and the others to a sword match at the castle.
The other one was a nobleman, the leader of the knights.
I think the nobleman’s name was Rutum.
“Is that true?” (Mane)
“Well, yeah.” (Yuna)
There’s no doubt about it, I think.
“So it wasn’t just a rumor. I heard that that cocky brat lost to a student and had to resign, but it sounded like a bad joke. When I asked around for details, everyone said the female student’s identity was unknown, so I assumed the story was false.” (Mane)
I didn’t expect him to be younger than Mane-san. Also, she was calling him a brat.
“His Majesty the King imposed a gag order on the matter, and Yuna-chan wasn’t exactly a student, so no one was able to find out.” (Ellelaura)
“Still, if she was dressed like a bear, it’d be impossible to hide.” (Mane)
“She was wearing a school uniform when they dueled, so I don’t think anyone would think they were the same person.” (Ellelaura)
That’s right, no one would think that the girl from that time was me.
Only Shia and the others who had been directly involved knew the truth.
