Chapter 7335: Ves and the Dark Apostle Take Action
The Ixith Goliath fought virtually alone against all of the remaining human defenders of Philaster Crestia.
This was not much of an exaggeration.
While the Goliath Hive still dispatched a handful of scattered voribug swarms to provide assistance, the Level 8 Goliath did not necessarily need the help.
Whether it was regenerating from damage to destroying the major orbital fortifications that represented the Rubarthan Pact’s hold on this star system, the spawn of the Incubator performed as if it could do everything by itself!
What disappointed people the most was the ineffectual performance of the Ascended Giants.
Despite their rare and coveted superdimensional arms and armor, their results so far proved disappointing!
“These giants aren’t big enough! They keep getting smacked around by the big Goliath.”
“If not for their supertough armor, the Goliath would have cut them into slices already.”
“Can’t these giants do anything right?!”
The Ascended Giants previously performed pretty well when matched against an equal or slightly greater number of Level 7 or lower Goliaths.
Yet when faced with a much more powerful and remarkable Level 8 Goliath, their many shortcomings became exposed.
Their short elevation to their current life state left them with very little time to develop their true bodies.
Their superior scale should have been their decisive advantage in battle, yet when faced with an even larger and more massive adversary, the giants themselves fell victim to their own weapon!
However, their professionalism and their courage prevented them from giving up. They gritted their teeth and sought to undermine the large and monstrous Goliath as best as possible.
There was not much they could do, though.
Their spatial abilities proved too meager to harm or inhibit the Ixith Goliath.
Their plasma weapons lacked the resonance empowerment to neutralize the resonance empowerment that made his enormous body so resistant against damage.
The only weapons that proved reasonably effective were the mid-grade superdimensional weapons in their hands.
Superdimensional armaments happened to be the only known equipment that could effectively cleave through willpower manifestations.
Nobody understood the principles why this was the case, but right now a lot of people were grateful that they existed!
The Ascended Giants might not be large enough to confront the Ixith Goliath head-on, but they had numbers on their side.
They paired up and made sure to assault the alien entity from multiple directions.
This way, even if the Ixith Goliath managed to claw the giants in front of it away, other giants were able to assault the enemy from other sides.
“Do not blindly damage the shells! Focus your attacks on the joints! If we can cut off its limbs, its threat level will drop.”
Every Ur-Titan already got smacked a few times, but they bravely went back in order to fulfill their objective.
Their superdimensional halberds continued to cut at the joints and the shells around it. Their blades did not smoothly slice through all of the tough organic matter, but their effectiveness was just good enough to create substantial weak points with every strike.
If only the Ur-Titans and their weapons were larger.
Their 2.5x scale was still too small to cut deeper into the shells and flesh of the enemy Level 8 Goliath.
The giants had to rely on the ranged attacks from other friendly units to exploit the openings and force the Ixith Goliath to exert more power into regenerating its form.
This disappointed them. The Ixith Goliath possessed no strong weak points.
Even its joints were much thicker and harder to break due to their large size and dimensions. It was absolutely not simple to sever them and cut off the enemy’s limbs.
Furthermore, the Level 8 Goliath was not a dummy.
As the Ur-Titans hacked and slashed at the joints with single-minded fervor, the Ixith Goliath began to take the armored humanoids more seriously!
Compared to the ace mechs who proved too fast to hit with any reliability, the Ur-Titans were much easier to strike!
They were larger and more sluggish. The Ixith Goliath struck so fast that it was nearly impossible for the giants to evade the incoming claws.
The situation of the Ur-Titans steadily became more precarious as a result.
Each of their raiments already showed numerous large grooves. The patterns thankfully did not overlap. The giants in question made sure of that as they always tried to turn their bodies at the last second so that they could spread out the damage.
The more the enemy claws struck the undamaged sections of their raiments, the longer they could rely on its protection!
Still, everyone knew that there was a limit to this measure.
After a period of observation, the Dark Apostle finally made his move.
He had moved close enough to gain the measure of his target, but maintained just enough distance to escape the frenzy of the ongoing struggle.
Ves and the Dark Apostle did this in order to determine where they could do the most damage.
Attacking blindly and without direction would only cause them to waste their time and resources in vain.
If they wanted to achieve a better result than their subordinates, then they needed to fight intelligently.
“Do you think we should target the joints in the hopes of severing the limbs?”
“No.” Ves responded. “We are different from the other giants. Our raiment is made of superior superdimensional matter, so we don’t have as much to fear from the resonance-empowered claws. Besides, I don’t think it is difficult for the Ixith Goliath to regenerate its limbs. If we want to beat this enemy, we need to target the roots of its power.”
“Are you talking about the Mentalist Crystal? It will be difficult to dislodge it since it is buried right into the center of its body.”
“It is not the stolen resonance produced by the Mentalist Crystal that is causing our side to experience so many difficulties. The Ixith Goliath’s monstrous vitality is another source of power. Its body is so massive and filled with the power of life that exhausting it is far too difficult. I think we can make a contribution in this area.”
The Dark Apostle looked down on his Withering Sting.
“I’m not as big of a thinker as you. Please tell me straight. What do I need to target?”
“The body. Just the body. Focus on damaging as much of the biomass as possible. We are going for magnitude here. You need to attack a large amount of flesh and force the Goliath to regenerate much more of its body than now. Meanwhile, I will use your weapon as the medium to spread the withering curse as far as possible. I will be devoting my full concentration on facilitating the latter process. Both of us need to excel at what we do best.”
They needed to cooperate with each other in order to make a meaningful impact in this fight.
The Dark Apostle was pretty strong on his own, but he would just end up as another Ascended Giant if he relied on his usual solutions.
Ves and Blinky possessed the capacity to attack the intangible attributes of their enormous enemy, but doing so without support would cause them to get exhausted before accomplishing anything.
Only by working together would they be able to gain the support they needed to achieve a potential breakthrough!
After a brief pause, they refined their battle plan and started to take action.
The Dark Apostle carefully retrieved one of the hastily made javelins from his back.
This was not a normal throwing weapon, but a sacrificial atatl javelin designed to explode in an extraordinary fashion.
A special mechanism unfolded on the weapon, allowing the Dark Apostle to grip it from the end of the weapon.
He observed the Ixith Goliath carefully and waited for a brief moment just before it turned its head in a favorable direction.
Though attacking the head of a high-level Goliath had already been proven to be useless due to their redundant physiology and their rapid regeneration and adaptation, the Dark Apostle targeted it anyway!
While the giant gripped the javelin, Ves performed a specific method in order to prime the weapon to explode.
It began to glow ominously red as the fire energy locked inside the weapon became a lot more active and volatile than before!
With the skill imparted by the Sacrificial Spear Throwing Method, the Dark Apostle hurled the javelin, causing it to turn into a glowing red line before striking the Ixith Goliath precisely in the head!
A strong but silent explosion quickly engulfed the top end of the Level 8 Goliath’s body!
Though this was far from the only powerful attack to strike the Goliath, this attack happened to be different due to the nature of the explosive payload.
As visibility returned, many people became surprised that the javelin managed to inflict considerably more effective damage than a warship-grade cannon!
Large chunks of exoskeleton had been blown away.
Most of its eyes had exploded.
One of the mandibles had even been torn away while the other had become deformed.
Though the head still retained its overall shape, it was clear that it had lost a lot of integrity!
While the Ixith Goliath was normally able to regenerate its injuries right after their application, the megavoribug struggled to do so this time due to the lingering flames spread after the explosion.
The fire energy burst out of the javelin possessed a hunger and a persistence that required a bit more effort to douse.
It was only a bit more effort, though. The Ixith Goliath’s willpower was so vast and abundant that it was able to suppress the flames within a dozen or so seconds.
However, the Dark Apostle had already swooped forward by this time!
He took advantage of the gaps created by the earlier sacrificial javelin throw and plunged the tip of the sickly green glowing of his superdimensional spear deep into the exposed flesh of his enemy!
The Dark Apostle did not pause like an idiot. When the spear went as deep as it could be, the giant exerted his strength and began to withdraw his weapon only to stab his opponent a second time, and then a third time, and then a fourth time!
He unleashed a flurry of attacks. He did not pursue depth, but sought to spread the damage around.
As the Ixith Goliath moved to evade and counterattack, the Dark Apostle did not insist on attacking the head and moved in to attack whatever was convenient!
The high-grade superdimensional matter used to make the Withering Sting enabled the weapon to cut smoothly through resonance-empowered flesh and exoskeleton alike.
The brand-new weapon might not be large enough to cut through lots of biomatter, but no shell or bone could resist its sharpness!
The Dark Apostle was able to savage large amounts of thick exoskeleton plating, causing numerous holes to appear across the Level 8 Goliath’s body!
Due to the complex and costly material composition of the outer shells, it was not that easy for the Ixith Goliath to repair the damage.
Unless it was able to reabsorb the shell fragments that managed to get loose, the monstrous insect could only redistribute its shells or cannibalize its own flesh to close the gaps!
What was worse was that the withering curse had begun to infect the Goliath’s massive body.
Its stolen resonance did its best to resist the curse.
While it was quite effective at doing so, the Ixith Goliath was not actually that proficient at wielding the vast amount of willpower it had at its disposal!
Nothing was perfect. What it gained in quantity, it made up for it in quality.
The Mentalist Crystal could not compensate for the Level 8 Goliath’s lack of control and familiarity over this new form of power.
Perhaps the story might have been different if the Ixith Goliath had been born a few weeks or months earlier, but only a short amount of time had passed since its emergence!
This was far too little time for it to become proficient in wielding its stolen resonance!
This gave Ves enough opportunities to spread the curse.
The repeated moments of contact between the Withering Sting and the Goliath’s biomass caused a gradual buildup to occur.
During this time, Ves also grew more proficient in applying the curse on a resisting target.
Although the stolen resonance caused the curse to lose most of its effectiveness right away, Ves had begun to figure out a few tricks to improve his results!
“Its willpower is not invincible!”
