Chapter 4010: Purpose
The man who had spoken earlier sat at the front with Li Guo, Jue Ling, and the others. Everyone in that section enjoyed an exalted status. Even when facing Li Guo, the man was neither humble nor arrogant. “Grandmaster Min isn’t dead—he’s merely been asleep for far too long. It’s said that he wanted to wait until there was a breakthrough in spirit treasure formation research. He wanted to see if future generations could create something that surpassed his own works when he awakened.”
Li Guo slowly smiled. “Then he should have woken up long ago.”
“Oh? Could it be that Brother Li has already created one?” the man asked in surprise.
Li Guo glanced over at Jue Ling and Yu Jing. “See? You’ve hidden yourselves so deeply that others now underestimate you.”
Jue Ling chuckled and shook her head, but said nothing.
Yu Jing likewise held his tongue.
The other two exchanged glances. “During the war against the Nest civilization, the Yu clan unleashed their Heaven and Earth as One formation. It is undoubtedly incredibly powerful, but it is not necessarily beyond Grandmaster Min’s reach. He participated in the war against the Skyveil Megaverse and is the oldest formation master alive. He would not have said anything without some measure of certainty.”
Yu Jing glanced at the two. “What if the Immovable Skyveil Formation were used?”
They were both astonished. “Did you really obtain the Immovable Skyveil Formation?”
The Jue family had not used the Immovable Skyveil Formation during the war against the bugs, not because they were unwilling, but rather because they had been unable to.
They had underestimated the Immovable Skyveil Formation and overestimated their own abilities.
They had believed that they could easily merge Heaven and Earth as One with the Immovable Skyveil Formation, only to find that they were far from succeeding. They had failed. Still, given enough time, there was no doubt that they would eventually succeed.
During the war, the Immovable Skyveil Formation had only been able to unleash the same level of destruction as Heaven and Earth as One, which had meant that there had been no need to use it.
There certainly had been no need to expose the formation to the Nest civilization.
When the Yu family did not deny anything, the two men sighed. “If you truly do have the Immovable Skyveil Formation, then no one can match it.”
“Hmph!” Li Guo snorted coldly. He wanted to argue, but he thought better of it. He was genuinely unable to create a spirit treasure formation that was greater than the Immovable Skyveil Formation.
Grandmaster Yu Ran just listened on in silence. The Immovable Skyveil Formation and Heaven and Earth as One... They must be the most formidable spirit treasure formations available in the Nine Odysseys Megaverse.
She wondered just how powerful they were.
“Grandmaster Min is arriving.”
At the edge of the Blackmarsh, a beast was pulling a carriage, speeding towards the spirit treasure formation. An old man sat inside, his robe immaculate and white. There was a cane at his side and a table with tea laid out before him. He occasionally sipped some tea, appearing calm and serene.
The carriage was being driven by what appeared to be a very young child.
As the carriage drew near, many eyes turned to look at it with gazes filled with respect. This was especially true among spirit treasure formation masters, who looked positively reverent.
Grandmaster Min had once been an independent cultivator, and he had eventually risen up to become the greatest formation master of his era. That had taken place before the founding of Skyveil City, and while the three great clans had been around, they had not yet risen to the forefront of their field.
Grandmaster Min could be considered living history.
His arrival was so important that not even Li Guo, who believed himself to be above all others when it came to mastery of spirit treasures, dared to underestimate the old man.
When the carriage came to a halt, Jue Ling, Yu Jing, and the others all rose to their feet and faced the carriage. They all offered slow bows. “Greetings, Grandmaster Min.”
All of the cultivators from the Nine Odysseys Megaverse who were assembled behind the formation Grandmasters also bowed. “Greetings, Grandmaster Min.”
Yu Ran and her companions from the Spirit Nidus exchanged glances, and then slowly bowed as well, showing their respect.
Inside the carriage, Grandmaster Min took a small sip of tea. The taste started bitter, but it had a sweet aftertaste. He looked up at the crowd, but just as he opened his mouth to speak, his eyes trembled as his pupils flickered. His gaze grew vacant, and the teacup slipped from his fingers, falling with a soft clatter that startled those outside the carriage.
“Grandmaster Min, is something the matter?” Yu Jing asked.
The child driving the carriage blinked, as if waiting for instructions.
Grandmaster Min’s eyes flickered, trembling once more before growing calm. Still, they held a completely different expression from mere moments earlier.
Previously, the man’s eyes had been ancient, as though he could see through all of reality. At the moment, they were filled with surprise and confusion. They looked nothing like the eyes of someone who had lived for countless years.
Is... is this the Blackmarsh? Lu Yin was astonished. He had not anticipated that he would come back to the Blackmarsh. A Netherfiend had arrived here.
It was at that moment that memories started to surge in. Lu Yin’s expression shifted as a flood of recollections as vast as the abyss assaulted him. He was forced to close his eyes and quietly accept them.
Everyone outside of the carriage simply waited. Enough time passed for an incense stick to burn, and yet there was still no movement from the old man.
The child driver’s brow furrowed. “Grandfather?”
In the distance, Li Guo sneered. “What an impressive show, Grandmaster Min.”
Even then there was no response.
The formation master sitting at the front of the crowd beside Jue Ling, who had known of Grandmaster Min’s imminent arrival, grew uneasy. “Could something have happened to the Grandmaster?”
Jue Ling turned to the child. “Go and check on your master.”
The child hesitated for a moment, but then he reached to pull the carriage door open.
At the same time, a hand appeared and opened the door completely. Grandmaster Min had personally opened the door.
When the crowd saw the old man, they bowed again. “Greetings, Grandmaster Min.”
In Grandmaster Min’s body, Lu Yin looked out at the crowd and nodded. When he spoke, it was with an aged voice. “Forgive me, everyone. I grew weary and dozed off. I feel much better now.”
“Grandmaster, you must take care of your health,” the Grandmaster beside Yu Jing quickly said.
Lu Yin nodded. “At Greater Sancte Awe Gate’s request, this old man came here to look at this spirit treasure formation. Forgive the disturbance.”
He then slowly stepped down from the carriage and walked to the front of the crowd, paying no attention even as he walked past Li Guo.
Li Guo just rolled his eyes.
When Lu Yin arrived at the front, he stared at the spirit treasure formation before him in a daze.
It was the same formation that he had discovered in the underground chamber, and yet it looked completely different at this moment.
He had absorbed Grandmaster Min’s knowledge of spirit treasure formations, which far surpassed Lu Yin’s own knowledge. That alone made the Possession remarkable, but even if Grandmaster Min was ancient and highly accomplished, he was likely no better than Li Guo. Grandmaster Min had never created anything at the level of Li Guo’s Heaven, Earth, and Man: Threefold Link.
Grandmaster Min had certainly created impressive formations of his own, but their rarity had exaggerated their reputations after the passage of so much time. Things had reached the point where not even Li Guo would dare to deny the supposed supremacy of Grandmaster Min’s formations.
What concerned Lu Yin the most was that Grandmaster Min already knew the purpose of the spirit treasure formation being studied. More accurately, the Netherfiends had long since suspected Silent Death. Grandmaster Min had made the journey not just because he had been requested by Greater Sancte Awe Gate, but also to test the Netherfiends’ suspicion.
Lu Yin did not have enough red energy to maintain the Possession for long, but even the brief amount of time that had passed so far was sufficient.
The Netherfiends’ suspicions regarding Silent Death had formed long ago, and Grandmaster Min’s mastery of spirit treasure formations allowed him to swiftly confirm those suspicions.
The spirit treasure formation was intended to form a connection to the Death Megaverse.
The Death Megaverse was a fishing civilization that constantly sent out skeletons sealed in spirit treasures. The fact that the skeletons were used as bait naturally meant that they had means to contact the Death Megaverse.
Shortly after the skeleton had been released from the spirit treasure, it had succeeded in establishing contact with the Death Universe. There had been a great deal of luck involved at that time, as the Death Megaverse had been quite close. It had taken fewer than ten Boundless Advanced spirit treasures to establish the spirit treasure formation that established contact.
However, the Nine Odysseys Megaverse had quickly noticed the connection and had used the black Mother Tree to hide the human civilization and avert disaster.
Since then, that skeleton, which was known as Zhu, had created Silent Death with the goal of using dozens of Boundless Advanced spirit treasures to construct another formation and reestablish the connection with the Death Megaverse. Completion meant that the Nine Odysseys Megaverse would no longer be able to hide.
The Death Megaverse had been deceived once, but a second time was impossible.
This was what the Netherfiends had suspected about Silent Death.
As fellow fishing civilizations, Obscura had a far greater understanding of the Death Megaverse than humanity.
It was possible that Greater Sancte Green Lotus and the other Immortals harbored similar suspicions about Silent Death, but those suspicions had not been shared with Lu Yin.
Now, through Possessing the Netherfiend Grandmaster Min, Lu Yin had confirmed those suspicions.
Fishing civilizations, fishing civilizations... They really are always fishing. They have always wanted to eradicate our human civilization.
Simply surviving in the cosmos is far too difficult.
Silent Death had successfully remained hidden for countless ages just so that a single spirit treasure formation could be prepared.
Obscura had created the Netherfiends and sent two gates to the human megaverses. Still, the ultimate outcome would also be a catastrophe that led to death.
If humanity wished to truly stand tall in the Aevum Inch, they needed to become a fishing civilization on the same level. Without that, they would forever live in fear and uncertainty.
Still maintaining the Possession, Lu Yin turned around and headed back to the carriage. “Let’s go.”
Jue Ling and the others were puzzled. “Grandmaster Min, why are you leaving so soon?”
Even Li Guo shot a look at Grandmaster Min. Did the old coot notice something?
Lu Yin spoke in the hoarse, aged voice of Grandmaster Min, “This old man is powerless and must report to Greater Sancte Awe Gate.”
“Grandmaster, you are far too modest. If even you are powerless, then our presence here is nothing more than a waste of time,” the Grandmaster beside Yu Jing gently retorted.
Li Guo was irritated by the comment, and he shot a glare at the man.
Lu Yin shook his head. He sat back down in the carriage and hid himself from view of those outside. He pulled out a communication device and quickly reached out to Greater Sancte Awe Gate. “This old man has slept for too long, leaving my mind muddled. Now is the time for all of you. I hope that you will lend your aid to Greater Sancte Awe Gate and share this burden.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a gate appeared beside his carriage, startling everyone. Greater Sancte Awe Gate’s gate?
The old man stepped back out of the carriage.
From above, Greater Sancte Awe Gate’s voice fell, “Grandmaster Min, since you are weary, rest in the Frightened Sparrow Terrace.”
Lu Yin released a sigh before leading the child driver through the gate, vanishing.
At the site of the spirit treasure formation, the crowd was despondent.
“No wonder he is a Grandmaster; just a glance can tell him whether anything can be learned. In comparison, we remain arrogant and ignorant yet know nothing. Shameful, shameful.”
Li Guo scowled. “Fool! I’ve tolerated you long enough. Just because that old man failed to figure it out does not mean that I will fail! Shut your mouth!”
The formation Grandmaster retorted in irritation, “So, Master Li Guo, do you even look down on Grandmaster Min now?”
Li Guo gave a contemptuous snort. “That old man has a bit of skill, at least enough to know that he can’t solve this. However, he spent his strength countless years ago. So what if he says that it can’t be solved? Should we just give up? Say that to Greater Sancte Awe Gate, if you dare.”
The Grandmaster wanted to press the argument, but he was pulled back by the one standing beside him. With another snort, the man fell silent.
Li Guo turned his focus back to the spirit treasure formation. “All of you, put forth your best efforts. Don’t lose heart. Greater Sancte Awe Gate is awaiting results.”
...
Grandmaster Min arrived at the site of Lu Yin’s battle with Zhi, and he slowly walked towards Lu Yin’s body.
The child exclaimed in surprise, “Grandfather, this isn’t the Frightened Sparrow Terrace, is it?”
The old man continued forward until he was within five meters of Lu Yin’s body. With that, the Possession was ended, and Grandmaster Min woke up. He glanced around in bewilderment. Where was he?
Lu Yin opened his eyes and casually waved a hand, shattering Grandmaster Min’s white robe to reveal gray robes underneath. The white robe had never been clothing at all, but rather a hidden spirit treasure formation, arranged with cultivated spirit seeds to block all perception.
Grandmaster Min himself was a peak Dukkhan, and with the support of a spirit treasure formation that ranked among the most powerful in the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, even Greater Sancte Awe Gate and the other Immortals would have needed special methods to see through it. Yet they would never have acted so rudely, for Grandmaster Min was held in the highest regard.
No one could have imagined that Grandmaster Min was a Netherfiend who had slept in cryostasis for so many years just to wait for the day when Silent Death’s spirit treasure formation was found.
Even if Greater Sancte Awe Gate had not requested the man’s presence, Grandmaster Min would have awakened on his own.
