Chapter 4450: Learning By Observing The Stars
Lu Yin looked at Progenitor Chen. “Back when I awakened the Starfist Manual, it was through the Shattered Dipper that a predecessor left behind. Now, I will create a Dipper Fist for you, Senior. I hope that it will help you to gain enlightenment.”
As he spoke, he clenched his right fist. Within the Starfist Manual, the Dipper Fist ignited, and he threw a punch.
Chen Jian stared at the punch. This was the true Beidou Fist Intent, born of the Shattered Dipper that some unknown predecessor had left behind in their Starfall Megaverse. This was fundamentally different from the way that their civilization had merely borrowed the power of that Shattered Dipper.
As he looked at Lu Yin in this moment, it was as if Chen Jian were seeing the Shattered Dipper itself.
Lu Yin threw a punch, and his fist intent surged toward Progenitor Chen. The man just stood in place without moving as the fist intent drew closer and closer.
Chen Jian’s eyes bulged. No, this is wrong! There is no way that this can form a Dipper Fist.
A Dipper Fist was the pinnacle of what could be created with fist intent, something that could stay in a universe for countless years. Lu Yin’s punch was clearly an attack, so how could it leave behind a star of fist intent?
Chen Jian was just about to warn Lu Yin, only for the younger man to immediately follow through with a second punch. The fist intent of the second punch moved even faster, and it rapidly closed in on the first.
After that came a third punch, a fourth, a fifth...
One punch after another was thrown out until, at the very last moment that the first fist intent was about to strike Progenitor Chen, all of the fist intents merged. Before his eyes, the countless punches fused together into a materialized fist intent. The fist intent became substantial and then condensed into a star, a Dipper Fist.
Chen Jian was stunned. Can it actually be done like this?
This Lord Lu had only just started cultivating the Star Fist, and he was unable to throw a single punch that would leave behind a star of fist intent that could last throughout the ages. But by fusing multiple fist intents, he had managed to create one. How had he come up with this method? Even so, this star of fist intent would disperse very quickly.
Lu Yin had encountered more than one opponent who had used the power of time to fuse multiple battle techniques together to unleash a sudden burst of explosive power, such as Chu Yuan’s Realm of Time and Gan Mo’s Blood Blade. Thus, it had been rather easy for him to think of the same method.
Progenitor Chen stared at the Dipper Fist that was right before him and then stepped forward, charging into it with his own body.
Chen Jian was dumbfounded. Wasn’t he supposed to comprehend it? What is this supposed to mean?
Lu Yin had not even thrown a punch at Progenitor Chen, and yet the man had gone and charged into the punch on his own. Chen Jian suddenly realized that the people of the Trio were a bit strange. Their way of thinking was utterly inexplicable.
Progenitor Chen’s body kept receiving the blows of the Beidou fist intent, yet nothing was able to stop him from moving deeper and deeper into the Dipper Fist.
Lu Yin had not put much force into his punches; he had only released fist intent. Otherwise, not to mention Progenitor Chen, but even Chen Jian, who was an actual Immortal, would have been badly injured by the punches.
The entire purpose was to allow Progenitor Chen to gain enlightenment.
The man’s outer robe burst apart, revealing countless sword scars across his body. They were the wounds left behind by the Keeper of Balance’s sword intent, as not even experiencing a rebirth through the Nirvana Tree Path had been able to erase them.
Thunderous explosions continuously struck Progenitor Chen, yet his eyes grew brighter and brighter. He observed every punch that Lu Yin had thrown and saw the profound mystery of the Dipper Fist, and he also saw... the Starfist Manual.
The man’s body suddenly burst through the Dipper Fist. In that moment, it was as if Progenitor Chen was once again seeing Lu Yin throw a punch. It pierced his body, and the Starfist Manual became instantly clear.
He stood where he was, not moving other than to close his eyes.
Chen Jian glanced over at Lu Yin, who let out a breath of relief. As expected, when it came to battle techniques, Progenitor Chen was extraordinarily talented.
If Lu Yin had been the one attempting to comprehend the Starfist Manual in this manner, he might have failed. The Shattered Dipper had been left behind by a predecessor who had truly comprehended the Star Fist, while what Lu Yin had unleashed was nothing more than pure Beidou fist intent. Even so, Progenitor Chen had managed to comprehend the manual. His talent was truly unmatched.
Two men waited in silence. After a long while, Progenitor Chen opened his eyes. He turned to face Lu Yin and threw a punch.
Lu Yin’s eyes flared. “Good!”
He threw his own punch as well. With a boom, the two streams of Beidou fist intent collided. Neither had much power, and yet Chen Jian was utterly shaken. He really comprehended it? Damn it! Can it really be comprehended like this? Just how exceptional is his talent?
Even after being pushed hard by his masters in turns, Chen Jian had still failed to comprehend the Starfist Manual. His masters’ mastery of the Star Fist had far surpassed Lord Lu’s, and yet not even they had been able to help him awaken to it. On the other hand, this Progenitor Chen had actually been beaten into enlightenment by Lord Lu.
This was no longer something that could be explained with talent alone; just what was going on with this guy?
Moments before, Chen Jian had not believed that Progenitor Chen could comprehend anything at all, so at this moment, his entire worldview was shattered.
Lu Yin laughed loudly. “Congratulations, Senior, for comprehending the Star Fist!”
Progenitor Chen looked down at his own hands, feeling somewhat excited. “This fist technique is good, very good! And it suits me exceptionally well, especially when paired with my Cosmic Art.”
Lu Yin nodded. “That’s exactly why I thought of you, Senior. I hope to rely on your mastery of your Cosmic Art to help cultivate the Star Fist.”
In truth, he had only been trying things out, and he had not been completely confident that Progenitor Chen would be able to comprehend the Starfist Manual. Lu Yin had not expected Progenitor Chen to succeed so quickly. This could only be regarded as an unexpected delight.
Progenitor Chen clenched a fist, relaxed it, and then clenched it again. “This fist technique feels as though it was created for me. Does it come from the Sixth Rampart?”
“The Sixth Rampart: the supremely powerful and invincible Star Fist.”
“How wonderful it would have been to be born during the Nine Ramparts era...” Progenitor Chen muttered to himself. He then looked at Lu Yin and released the Cosmic Art.
Lu Yin did the same. They both simply ignored Chen Jian while using the Cosmic Art and the Star Fist to verify each other’s comprehension.
Lu Yin not only wanted to accelerate the speed at which he cultivated the Star Fist, but he also hoped to carve out his own path.
Chen Jian watched the two men practice and smiled. It was a smile of great joy, as he saw hope for humanity’s legacy at this moment. Masters, may you rest in peace.
What he was unable to accomplish, someone else eventually would.
From the River of Aeons, Zhao Ran watched Lu Yin and Progenitor Chen. She also smiled as she rowed her boat along, humming a tune as she gradually drifted away.
Lu Yin fully experienced the truth of the phrase, “cultivation knows no passing of time.”
As the stars shifted, ages passed. 1,000 years went by, though, of course, only 1,000 years within the Mirari Realm. Even so, this was already the longest time that Lu Yin had ever spent cultivating a single battle technique.
But even after 1,000 years, he still did not feel like much time had passed. On the contrary, Lu Yin’s understanding of the Star Fist had only grown more confused.
Clearly, all he needed to do was light up more stars, one by one, but the more that he cultivated the Star Fist and the more clearly he saw each star with the Cosmic Art, the more he felt that he was unable to continue. It was as if a wall had been erected in front of him.
Lu Yin was all too familiar with this sensation; for many years now, he had been building a wall in his heart to cultivate his mental state. Before the wall in his heart was complete, a wall of Star Fist had appeared and blocked his path forward.
Sensing this brought about a sense of helpless contradiction. He was clearly moving forward, and yet it felt like he was retreating. Compared to 1,000 years ago, his understanding of the Star Fist had actually grown worse.
Progenitor Chen retracted his Cosmic Art and opened his eyes. He turned to meet Lu Yin’s gaze, and frowned. “Cultivating like this will never work. The Sixth Rampart definitely did not cultivate the Star Fist in this manner.”
Lu Yin looked over at Chen Jian. “Senior, did your masters ever mention how the Star Fist should be cultivated?”
Chen Jian thought back. “Because I never awakened to the Starfist Manual, my masters did not say much. They merely mentioned one thing before their deaths: the constellations of civilization, the myriad stars of humanity.”
Lu Yin did not understand. “The constellations of civilization? The myriad stars of humanity?”
Chen Jian nodded. “My masters did not say much about it, so I forgot about it until now. If you had not asked, I would have never remembered.”
Lu Yin looked at Progenitor Chen, but the man did not understand either. Progenitor Chen was exceptionally talented when it came to battle techniques, but this phrase clearly concerned more than just battle techniques. It also concerned civilization.
Lu Yin sat down cross-legged, closed his eyes, and quietly reflected on the words.
No one disturbed them, and Progenitor Chen likewise closed his eyes and contemplated the Star Fist.
Chen Jian hoped that Lu Yin would be able to make sense of that phrase, but no matter how gifted Lu Yin might be, he had not lived during the Nine Ramparts era. Chen Jian’s own masters had been from that era, and yet even they had failed to explain it to him clearly, so how could Lu Yin possibly make sense of it?
Sometimes, the understanding of certain words depended not on the breadth of one’s knowledge, but rather on their position. The understanding of a frog at the bottom of a well would always be different from that of a swan.
In terms of cultivation alone, Lu Yin was not yet an Immortal and thus could not compare to Chen Jian’s masters. In terms of experience, he had never cultivated within the Sixth Rampart. However, he was the current lord of a civilization, and from the moment he first comprehended the Starfist Manual, he had clearly seen that this battle technique was intended to be more than a civilization's legacy.
This led Lu Yin to consider the Star Fist from the perspective of the ruler of a civilization.
Chen Jian, along with his masters, had always held the perspective of individual cultivators, and because their perspectives were different, what they saw was naturally different as well.
It might not be easy for Lu Yin to comprehend the meaning of that phrase, but it was also not utterly impossible, as Chen Jian had imagined.
After an unknown amount of time, Lu Yin opened his eyes again to look at Progenitor Chen. “The cultivation inheritance of the Star Fist has already been lost. For now, it is not very realistic to retrace our predecessors’ path, so we should see if we can open a path of our own.”
“How?” Progenitor Chen asked.
Lu Yin replied, “The Starfist Manual, with myriad stars as the fist. In that case, we’ll learn by observing the stars. The more we forget, the more we may learn.”
Progenitor Chen praised him, “To obtain an inheritance, master it, and then break beyond it—especially when facing such supremely powerful and invincible strength—requires a rare courage. You truly deserve your place at the peak of the current human civilization.”
Lu Yin gave a helpless smile. “If there were a complete inheritance, I wouldn’t want to do this, but we can only try this method. By using the Starfist Manual as the foundation, the Star Fist as the form, and your talent, Senior, I hope that we can once again catch a glimpse of that supremely powerful and invincible punch.”
Progenitor Chen laughed loudly. “You think too highly of me! I, Xia Shang, believe that my talent for battle techniques is rare throughout all history, but even I don’t dare to claim to surpass the countless outstanding figures of the Nine Ramparts era. Still, I at least have the courage to give this a try.”
Lu Yin stood up. “There is a planet called Earth where we can observe the stars. The reason why I plan to go there is because the galaxy that contains Earth is called the Milky Way.”
“The Milky Way?” Progenitor Chen did not understand.
On the other hand, Chen Jian was badly shocked. “The Milky Way!”
Lu Yin looked at the old man, unsurprised that Chen Jian knew of the Milky Way. The Milky Way was precisely the name of the Sixth Rampart’s guardian artifact.
While Chen Jian did not understand the true importance of a guardian artifact, he must have heard of the Milky Way from his masters.
“That is right, the Milky Way. The guardian artifact of the Sixth Rampart was known as the Milky Way, but this Milky Way is not the same one,” Lu Yin commented. Earth’s Milky Way was nothing more than a local name, and it had no connection to the guardian artifact, aside from sharing the same name.
Progenitor Chen’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Good! We will borrow the name of the Milky Way as a lucky omen and hope that we can forge our own Star Fist.”
Lu Yin then took Progenitor Chen with him, teleporting to Earth after leaving the Mirari Realm.
Nearly 3,000 years had passed since Lu Yin had first started cultivating. Earth should have long since changed beyond recognition, but in reality, it had not changed much at all. Neither technology nor cultivation had completely transformed the planet. Earth still retained its original appearance because it was the starting point of Lu Yin’s journey, which gave it a unique status.
Lu Yin had not expected Earth to remain so unchanged even after all these years. Looking at the familiar land and cities, he felt deeply moved.
Thinking back, everything that had happened in the past felt like the shimmering stars: so real, yet somehow unreal as well.
