Chapter 4470: Thousand Machinations

Chapter 4470: Thousand Machinations

Day after day passed, and day after day Lu Yin told stories to the bear. Though it was only one hour each day, he still had to think of the stories.

Outside of that one hour each day, Lu Yin listened to Withered Requiem’s music and continued to build the wall in his heart.

In this manner, 100 years passed.

Lu Yin truly could not understand why a bear loved listening to stories so much. It listened for a century without showing the slightest sign of dislike. Every day, it returned to him for another.

Fishbone and the others had all grown numb to it, and so had Old Sixth. They could not help but ask, “His stories are getting lazier and lazier, and yet you still want to hear them?”

The bear flipped through its book while nodding.

“Is there something different about him? You are paying far too much attention to him,” Old Sixth asked again. They were very puzzled and glanced into the distance as they spoke.

The bear raised its head and looked in the same direction. Lu Yin and his band were that way, not too far away. Lu Yin had stopped even trying to hide. Doing so was pointless and only wasted time. Instead, he arrived each day on his own to tell a story, as the quicker he finished, the sooner he was done.

After watching for a while, the bear lowered its head and went back to reading without answering.

Old Sixth stared at Lu Yin. Humans had a very special status in the Aevum Inch, but there were many in the Death Megaverse, a number of which were from the Nine Ramparts era. The toad’s ancestor had admired the humans of that era, but they had also been wary of them. There was no denying that the human civilization of that era had been truly powerful.

But even the humans who had survived since that era had never been regarded so highly by the bear. What exactly was different about this human?

Several more decades passed with Lu Yin still making up stories for the bear. Even though the stories that he invented were terrible and entirely perfunctory, the bear listened with great interest, always playing with the void to illustrate the stories being told.

Lu Yin truly could not take it anymore. “Have you still not heard enough?”

The bear grinned and shook its head. Even without Old Sixth translating, Lu Yin could roughly understand what the bear meant.

“One story a day for more than a hundred years. It’s been over 40,000 stories. You may not have heard enough, but I have told enough. If you really want stories, can’t you find someone else to tell them?” Lu Yin helplessly protested.

The bear raised a pay and drew a circle.

Lu Yin let out a breath. “I still have to compose music. I really don’t have time to keep talking.”

The bear propped its chin with a paw and sized Lu Yin up. It made a point to particularly study the points on his bones. There were a few more than before.

Lu Yin understood. “Fine, I’ll keep talking.”

The bear raised a paw and pointed at the castle. It then held up one finger.

This time Lu Yin did not understand, so he looked at Old Sixth.

The toad said, “Your state of mind is constantly drawing closer to the music of this world, which is good for you. As long as this continues, it will eventually be enough for you to transform.

“Listening to Withered Requiem’s song each day is especially beneficial to you. If you need it, I can have Withered Requiem sing one extra song each day. I believe that they will not refuse.”

Not far away, Fishbone was dumbfounded. “You can understand even that? You made that up yourself, didn’t you?”

Lu Yin did not care about such details, and he simply stared at the bear. “You can make Withered Requiem sing a second time every day?”

The bear smiled and then pointed at the castle again.

Old Sixth translated, “Withered Requiem is kindhearted and generally doesn’t refuse others. As long as you need it, and since they also enjoy singing, then if you are willing to listen, they will be willing to sing. It is just like your storytelling—you are willing to speak, and I am willing to listen.”

Lu Yin glanced at Old Sixth, having become certain of one thing: Old Sixth was definitely embellishing things on his own. The bear had merely pointed at the castle, so how could the gesture have contained so much meaning?

“Alright, thank you for the trouble,” Lu Yin said. At the same time, he felt more and more confident that this bear was anything but simple.

Still, it was just one hour of storytelling each day. For Withered Requiem to sing more and speed up the development of his own mental state, that one hour was clearly worth it.

There were still a little more than 100 years left in the protection period for the Trio. Lu Yin’s original plan had been to force Obscura to war, but that was no longer possible. The Keeper of Balance had already made his move. The only thing that Lu Yin could do now was break through to the Immortal realm as quickly as possible.

Withered Requiem really did start giving extra performances each day, and not just one. Sometimes there were two, or even three, depending on their mood.

Consequently, Lu Yin increasingly felt himself aligning with this world more and more.

In the blink of an eye, another 100 years passed. One day, Lu Yin succeeded in composing his own song, and his heart surged with excitement.

He had finally reached this step.

The inspiration for this composition came from all the stories that he had told the bear, from his initial resistance to later adaptation, and even to refining each and every story.

The stories were all fabricated, but the emotions that they contained were real. Every choice and decision made by the characters in those stories came from the creatures’ own emotions, and those became the framework of Lu Yin’s composition.

The moment his song was completed, he saw the wall in his heart blot out the sky and sun, completely blocking his path forward. At last, he had completed the transformation of the wall in his heart.

His next task was to break that great wall down.

When he managed to destroy the wall, he could try to step into the Immortal realm.

Breaking through to Immortality was both very complicated and very simple, and at the very least, it was not what he had imagined.

At first, Lu Yin had believed that, in addition to perfecting his state of mind, a breakthrough to the Immortal realm also required him to achieve a certain level of comprehension in regards to battle techniques, cultivation arts, sequence laws, his Progenitor’s worlds, and so on. However, he had later learned that the Immortal realm was simply the Immortal realm. It was a qualitative transformation of life itself. Battle techniques and the like were all things cultivated during life. When breaking into the Immortal realm, if one could gain insight, they could transform. If not, that lack would not affect their breakthrough.

An example was Ku Deng. Before he broke through to the Immortal realm, his heartrift power had only barely surpassed the level of nine abysses. But after his breakthrough, it transformed into eighteen. He had not gained any sudden enlightenment in regards to his battle technique before his breakthrough; it had simply grown stronger as the essence of his life changed.

The same was true for Ancient God. His battle techniques, cultivation methods, and the rest had not transformed either. They had strengthened because the vessel itself had become stronger.

The greatest difference between the Immortal realm and all cultivation realms before it lay in one’s understanding of the cosmos, as Immortals comprehended cosmic laws and resonate with them. Whether one entered Immortality through resetting a megaverse or through a direct breakthrough, they still had to comprehend a cosmic law, and that law had to be connected to everything that the creature had cultivated throughout their entire life up to that point.

That alone amounted to an overall transformation.

What Lu Yin needed to do next was break down the wall in his heart, and in terms of comprehension, find a cosmic law.

The beats of the music merged with one another. The composition that Lu Yin had created made Fishbone and the others feel very comfortable when they heard it.

Still, they could not yet challenge the castle because Yong Heng had not caught up to the rest of the band.

Fishbone found Yong Heng more and more irritating to look at. This guy was improving far too slowly.

Yong Heng was feeling quite helpless. To him, he felt that he was improving rather quickly. At the very least, the rhythm of his strikes was no longer as revolting to the others as it had been at the beginning.

“Give me a little more time,” Yong Heng said.

Fishbone flicked its tail, full of disdain.

Joy City suddenly stopped. Lu Yin raised his head to look out at the sky. Why have we stopped?

“Hey,” Old Sixth called out.

Lu Yin looked over. The bear was beckoning to him.

It was not yet time for telling another story, so Lu Yin walked over in confusion. The bear smiled and opened a paw. A black disc appeared there, which it held out toward Lu Yin.

“What does this mean?” he asked.

Old Sixth replied, “Your luck is good. This is an invitation. Countless creatures would break their heads trying to get to that place, only to still fail.”

“What place?”

“The Abyss of Thousand Machinations,” Old Sixth stated in a grave tone.

Lu Yin was astonished. Thousand Machinations’s Abyss? He knew of that place. After all, he had Possessed many skeleton creatures, some of which had lived for a very long time and had heard of that name.

Thousand Machinations was one of the seven great Abysses of the Death Megaverse, and that Abyss was said to contain invincible battle techniques.

The Death Megaverse possessed a supreme cultivation outline known as the Death Codex! It was something that every creature in the Death Megaverse wanted to learn, including the Abyssals like Withered Requiem.

It was said that the Death Codex originated from the Abyss of Thousand Machinations and that any creature that entered that Abyss and came back out would undergo a transformation.

Of the skeleton creatures Lu Yin had Possessed, every last one that knew of Thousand Machinations wanted to go to that Abyss.

He had never expected to receive an invitation, but he accepted it. “Is this the invitation?”

Old Sixth said, “An invitation only means that you are qualified to enter the Abyss of Thousand Machinations. It does not mean that you can truly get there. You still need to find that Abyss yourself, and only when you get within a certain range will you be taken there. That depends on your luck.”

Lu Yin put the invitation away. “Thank you.”

The bear stood up and waved a paw. It turned to leave, but then it thought for a moment and moved its paw again.

Lu Yin looked at Old Sixth. The toad lazily said, “It is telling you to take care and to not die. This war is not a simple one. It could trigger a greater war on an enormous scale.”

“What war?” Lu Yin asked.

At this moment, Joy City turned transparent. This was a sign that war was coming.

Lu Yin and all the other creatures looked ahead. There, space twisted, and in the hazy blur, a great mountain appeared, flickering in and out like an illusion.

And in front of that mountain appeared a figure Lu Yin knew all too well: You Che.

Is this Void Mountain?

“Yo yo, if you do not tell me, you will die.” Withered Requiem’s voice spread across the starry dome. Music then burst forth, suppressing the killing intent of every skeleton creature. They were only waiting for the moment when it would explode.

Ahead of the city, You Che was startled. “How did you find my Void Mountain?”

“Yo yo, I will ask one last time. Speak, or don’t.”

“A war would be bad for both of us. Could it be that the Death Megaverse intends to wage a full-scale war against Obscura?”

Boom!

The music erupted, along with boundless killing intent. Withered Requiem stepped forward as slaughter filled the cosmos.

You Che's gaze sharpened. Heaven and earth, all things in existence, the laws of heaven and earth reversed.

An unimaginable battle broke out. The radiance of that single instant was enough to bury everything.

Joy City swayed. Lu Yin had not expected the target of Withered Requiem after the Abyssal Displacement to actually be Void Mountain. Was it possible that the Keeper of Balance had revealed the location of Void Mountain?

That was fine. If You Che died in this battle, Lu Yin would not need to be cautious of taking control of Manifest City.

Also, if this could trigger an all-out war between Obscura and the Death Megaverse, the Trio would be safe for a while longer. There would be another period of protection, and no matter whether Obscura or the Death Megaverse suffered losses, it would benefit humanity.

“This war is not simple. The enemy is strong. Protect yourselves.” Zhou charged.

Fishbone plunged straight to the bottom of the river with a splash.

Yong Heng and Zhu exchanged glances, neither having any intention of joining this battle.

Lu Yin looked over at the bear and Old Sixth. They were already heading towards Void Mountain.

A group of creatures emerged from Void Mountain. You Che was not alone, and he had an entire civilization with him, though this civilization did not seem to be particularly strong.

However, You Che himself was very strong. If not, Withered Requiem would have never been driven to use the Abyssal Displacement to summon reinforcements.

Lu Yin stepped into outer space. He wanted to see the true face of Void Mountain.
