Chapter 2937: Army and Commanding Talent
Zou Jing was overjoyed. “Wonderful! With three experts of your caliber joining our ranks, we’ll surely be able to guard You Province!”
The standing of women in this world was much higher than in history. This was a world where strength reigned supreme, after all. As long as a woman was strong enough, she could become a general as well.
Zou Jing continued chatting with the trio. His smile further widened when he learned that Zu An and the others were planning to help recruit more people into the volunteer army. He handed an invitation letter[1] to Zu An before taking his leave.
“Ah Zu, are you really planning to become that fellow’s subordinate? Shouldn’t we claim a spot for ourselves in this era of chaos and become our own kings?” Yun Jianyue asked.
Zu An knew that she was reluctant to give up on her ambitions of becoming the boss of the underworld, so he spoke with a smile, “It might be an era of chaos, but the imperial court here wields formidable rallying power. It’ll be easier for us to grow if we borrow the imperial court’s reputation.”
Tingxue was confused. “Based on the history you have shared with us, even though Liu Bei joined Zou Jing’s army and contributed to the quelling of the Yellow Turban Army, his starting point was still much lower than the other warlords. Aren’t we just allowing history to repeat itself here?”
“While it's unwise to completely follow Liu Bei’s footsteps, we're still too weak right now. The best way for us to bulk up is to join the imperial court,” Zu An explained.
Yun Jianyue smiled. “Alright. I’ve been wanting to make it big. You don’t know how stifled I've been, being confined in this small county.”
She ordered her subordinates to gather. All in all, she had around five hundred people.
Zu An was flabbergasted. She’s the kind to make it big no matter which world she goes to.
What further surprised him were Yun Jianyue’s and Tingxue’s weapons. Yun Jianyue pulled out a serpent spear—she had obtained it from another world. Tingxue pulled out a metal stick and connected it to her sword. She called it the Frost Fair Blade, which was also otherwise known as the Green Dragon Crescent Blade[2].
Zu An pulled out the Tai’e Sword and the Skillbreaker Sword he'd forged from the Lord of Slaughter’s fang. Are these my twin swords....
For the next few days, the three of them trained and equipped the five hundred people before heading northeast to Guangyang Commandery’s Ji County to report. You Province’s governor resided in Ji County. The governor wasn't Liu Yan, as was the case in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but Guo Xun, as recorded in official annals.
While they were on the road, Yun Jianyue shared more information about this world with Zu An. “On top of the intimidation aura that suppresses individual cultivators, some of the elite armies in this world possess unique abilities. There are also commanders with special commanding traits that can raise an army’s attributes.”
Zu An was intrigued. “Why does our army not have any of that?”
“Our army is too small, and our soldiers haven’t been tempered on the battlefield yet. They might have undergone our strict training, but until they have survived the battlefield, they will remain as the weakest recruits,” Yun Jianyue explained. “As for commanding traits, I’m also not sure what the situation is with that.”
“We can ask Zou Jing about that. He’s a senior commander of You Province. He should know more about such stuff,” Zu An said.
Just then, they noticed several soldiers in the distance, running in their direction. Zu An stopped them and asked about the situation.
From the soldiers, they learned that Guangyang Commandery had fallen to the Yellow Turban Army’s Deng Mao and Cheng Zhiyuan. They had killed You Province’s governor, Guo Xun, and Guangyang Commandery’s marshall, Liu Wei, so there was no one to lead the troops anymore. The soldiers emphasized how fearsome the Yellow Turban Army was and advised them to quickly flee as well.
Yun Jianyue’s expression turned cold. With a sweep of her spear, she beheaded the loudest soldier. “Spy of the Yellow Turbans, how dare you spread rumors to undermine our army’s morale? Die!”
Zu An also knew that fear was contagious. If they allowed those soldiers to continue speaking, their army of five hundred would quickly lose their fighting spirit. He played along and added, “The Yellow Turban Army must be feeling conceited after conquering Ji County. This is the perfect opportunity to spring a surprise attack on them and catch them off guard!”
Yun Jianyue and Tingxue concurred with his judgment, so their army began marching toward Ji County.
Unsurprisingly, it was a complete mess there by the time they arrived. As the administrative hub of You Province, Ji County was prosperous. The Yellow Turban Army, which consisted of peasants from poorer backgrounds, had frenziedly ransacked the city and plundered from the magistrate and the populace.
Zu An dispatched a platoon to the city walls to plant their flags and cause as much of a ruckus as possible, so as to mislead the Yellow Turban Army into overestimating their strength. In the meantime, he would charge into the city with the remaining soldiers.
In contrast, the Yellow Turban Army was scattered around the city to plunder. Zu An’s onslaught caught them off guard. They had no time to figure out what was going on before fleeing in all directions. That allowed Zu An to suppress them despite having a smaller army. He easily crushed the Yellow Turbans that appeared in his path, leaving them no chance to gather its troops to muster a counterattack.
The superior fighting prowess of Zu An and the others shone. They charged at the forefront of the army, unleashing powerful skills that boosted their soldiers’ morale. Zu An keenly sensed that their army was gradually undergoing a metamorphosis. A mysterious power seemed to be gathering around them. It was likely the intimidation aura that Yun Jianyue had mentioned. In the process, they slaughtered their way to the city center.
Just then, a loud roar echoed. The soldiers of the Yellow Turban Army hurriedly got into a military formation. Their commanders, Deng Mao and Cheng Zhiyuan, had finally gotten a grip of themselves and rallied their elites together to fight back.
Zu An pulled out his Rune Weapon Chart. Countless golden ripples appeared in the sky, unleashing a bombardment of sword ki against the enemies. The Rune Weapon Chart was the perfect skill for such area bombardment. He wanted to deal as much damage to the enemy as possible before they were fully prepared.

Cheng Zhiyuan and Deng Mao roared, “Water Talisman Harmony!”
The silhouette of a yellow talisman appeared above the Yellow Turban Army. The injured soldiers began recovering at a visible pace. It didn’t take long for them to return to full health.
Zu An, Yun Jianyue, and Tingxue exchanged looks. That seems to be a group heal ability. Is this their commander’s commanding trait? That explains how the Yellow Turban Army conquered so many provinces and counties so quickly. How can one defeat an army that can heal whenever they need to?
The Yellow Turban Army’s morale surged. They chanted, “Heaven is dead! It’s time for the Yellow Sun to rise! Heaven is dead! It’s time for the Yellow Sun to rise!”[3]
A malevolent black aura seeped from their heads and swiftly enveloped the battlefield. The golden ripples in the sky gradually disappeared as Zu An sensed his abilities being suppressed. Instead of bombarding the entire enemy army, he could now only deploy his Rune Weapon Chart within a radius of thirty meters. At the same time, the Yellow Turban Army’s chants struck fear into the hearts of allied soldiers. Their five hundred soldiers revealed frightened looks, and their bodies trembled uncontrollably.
Zu An was astounded. Deng Mao and Cheng Zhiyuan were just extras in the Three Kingdoms, and the Yellow Turban Army wasn't an elite army. On top of that, the Yellow Turban Army in Ji County was still in disarray, with most having yet to gather. Yet they still turned out to be a formidable force. The disparity between an individual and an army was larger than Zu An had expected.
