Chapter 3869: A Stormy Lake Without A Storm
Lin Mu continued running.
Traveling on foot was slower than riding Little Shrubby, though Lin Mu did not mind. It was daytime and the Inner Court had far more activity compared to the night.
Occasionally, disciples flew overhead. Lin Mu even saw several large flying ships traveling between distant divisions. As such, using Little Shrubby here carried unnecessary risk. There were countless Beast Division experts within the Heavenly Stream Guardian Sect.
A beast as unique as Little Shrubby could easily attract attention. Besides, Shrubby was currently busy.
’As long as they don’t cause trouble.’ Lin Mu thought.
He could still faintly sense his connection with his tamed beasts. The twins were somewhere far away and Ashy was moving around constantly. Little Shrubby seemed to be following them.
Lin Mu had no idea what the naughty trio were doing. He decided ignorance was temporarily preferable. Running across the Inner Court continent took longer than Lin Mu expected. The distances within the Heavenly Stream Guardian World were absurd.
Even two neighboring divisions could be separated by hundreds of kilometers. Thankfully, Little Bull’s physical strength allowed him to maintain a high speed without appearing suspicious.
Several hours later, the sky ahead began to change and Lin Mu slowed. The bright daylight gradually disappeared. He looked up and saw thick dark clouds covering the horizon. They looked almost black.
The clouds formed a vast circular mass that stretched across the sky. But around them, the rest of the world remained bright. Cotton white clouds drifted lazily through the blue sky and sunlight illuminated the forests and distant hills.
Yet the region beneath the dark clouds remained gloomy.
Lin Mu stopped. "So that’s the Rain Dragon Lake."
Rumble
A low rumbling sound echoed through the distance. Lin Mu continued forward and the forest gradually changed. The massive trees became shorter, the undergrowth thinned and after several kilometers, even the beasts disappeared.
Lin Mu noticed the silence. There were no bird cries, no insects buzzing and not even small beasts around. Only the distant roar of water could be heard. The vegetation changed as well.
Tall trees vanished entirely and the plants growing closer to the lake were short. Most had thick roots and flexible stems. Some looked like grass, though their blades were several meters long.
Whenever powerful air currents swept across the region, the plants bent flat against the ground, then they slowly rose again.
Lin Mu continued walking and the Rain Dragon Lake finally appeared before him. Even Lin Mu paused as the lake was enormous. From his current position, he could barely see the opposite shore.
Lin Mu estimated its width to be over eighty kilometers. Perhaps it was even larger. The waters were dark and massive waves rolled across the surface. Some rose dozens of meters high before crashing back down.
The strange thing was that there was no wind.
Lin Mu confirmed it immediately. The air around him was almost completely still. Yet the lake behaved as if it were trapped within a violent storm. Water spouts suddenly formed and one rose from the lake several kilometers away.
It twisted upward like a serpent as hundreds of thousands of tons of water spiraled into the sky. Then the water spout collapsed and a deafening crash followed. The lake erupted in controlled chaos.
Lin Mu watched silently.
"Quite violent." Xukong commented.
"Yeah." Lin Mu stepped closer.
He remembered what the Luozi Brothers had told him. ’A Rain Dragon supposedly died here.’
Lin Mu was familiar with Rain Dragons. They were True Dragons. Rain Dragons possessed an innate connection to water, wind, and weather. Their appearance was often associated with storms.
Some ancient civilizations even worshiped them as gods of rain.
Lin Mu had encountered a descendant of one before. ’Qiulong Jiao.’
The old Flood Dragon from the Rust Sky World appeared in Lin Mu’s memories. Qiulong Jiao possessed the Rain Dragon bloodline. It had been diluted over countless generations, though the connection still existed.
Lin Mu looked at the lake again. "If a real Rain Dragon died here, its blood could certainly affect the environment."
"Depending on its cultivation." Xukong replied.
"True."
A powerful True Dragon could permanently alter an entire region after death. Its blood, its bones, its lingering Dao traces and even its final emotions could affect the environment. Thinking of that Lin Mu walked toward the shore.
Still, something bothered him. There was no rain but the dark clouds remained above. There was no wind, and the air remained still, yet the lake behaved as if both were present.
"It looks like a storm." Lin Mu muttered. "But there is no storm."
Xukong did not immediately reply. Lin Mu stopped a few meters from the water and he briefly released his Immortal Sense.
The Abyssal Horizon Veil Seal reacted as Lin Mu felt a faint fluctuation. He ignored it for now and let his Immortal Sense sweep across the surrounding area. But he sensed nothing which made him frown.
He expanded the range but still found nothing.
"No beasts." He checked again. "No insects either."
The region was completely devoid of animal life.
Lin Mu found plants, he found fungi and found several strange aquatic mosses growing near the shore. But there was no sign of anything capable of moving on its own.
"That’s strange." Lin Mu muttered and turned his attention toward the lake.
His Immortal Sense entered the water and resistance appeared immediately.
Lin Mu frowned but his Immortal Sense continued descending. One hundred meters, two hundred meters, Three hundred meters and then it stopped. Lin Mu withdrew his Immortal Sense and crouched before the lake shore.
His hand entered the water and scooped up a small amount.
The water looked normal. It was clear and slightly cold, but there was something different about it. Lin Mu weighed it in his palm and soon his eyes narrowed.
"I’m not mistaken." He scooped up more but the result remained the same.
"The water is heavier than normal water." The difference was considerable.
Lin Mu estimated the density. "This isn’t ordinary lake water."
Xukong hummed. "That would explain the resistance against your Immortal Sense."
Lin Mu nodded as dense materials naturally interfered with spiritual perception. The deeper his Immortal Sense traveled, the greater the accumulated resistance became. The lake was also clearly deep.
Three hundred meters had revealed nothing resembling a bottom.
Lin Mu stood and looked across the vast waters. "Eighty kilometers wide at least."
He frowned. "And possibly several kilometers deep."
Searching the entire lake with his Immortal Sense would be difficult. The seal prevented Lin Mu from maintaining his full Immortal Sense for extended periods. He needed another method.
