Chapter 3982: Hoodwinking A Poor Disciple

Chapter 3982: Hoodwinking A Poor Disciple

The disciple’s expression changed. "You... remember Senior Brother Yu?"

"Naturally." Lin Mu said it with complete confidence.

The truth was that he had absolutely no idea who Yu Han was. The disciple seemed impressed.

Of course, Lin Mu immediately added another layer. "He was always careless with the cataloguing system."

The disciple’s eyes widened. "Yes!"

He nodded enthusiastically. "Senior Brother Yu does have some problems with that."

Lin Mu nearly smiled as he had merely guessed. People in administrative departments were usually aware of who was competent and who caused trouble.

Lin Mu took a step forward. "Has the western archive undergone structural changes?"

The disciple quickly answered, "There was a partial reconstruction approximately eight thousand years ago, Elder. Several sections were moved."

Lin Mu nodded as that was useful. "And the old underground routes?"

The disciple frowned. "Underground routes?"

Lin Mu immediately stared at him. "You don’t know?"

The disciple became nervous. "I have only been assigned here for three hundred years, Elder."

"Three hundred years." Lin Mu sighed heavily. "You youngsters."

The disciple’s head lowered. "Yes, Elder."

Lin Mu continued in a tone filled with the weary disappointment of someone who had lived far too long.

"Forget it. The younger generation really has changed."

The disciple immediately looked guilty despite having no idea what he had supposedly done wrong.

Lin Mu almost felt bad... Almost.

He then looked toward the corridor behind the disciple. "Which way leads toward the elder archives?"

The disciple pointed immediately.

"That corridor leads to the eastern records section. The elder archives are two courtyards beyond that, but Elder, may I ask why you are looking for them?"

Lin Mu gave him a cold look and the disciple immediately regretted asking.

"Do you question every elder who walks through here?"

"No!" The response came so quickly that Lin Mu almost laughed.

"Then why question me?"

"I..." The disciple’s face reddened.

Lin Mu waved his hand. "Forget it."

He began walking and after taking several steps, he stopped.

The disciple was still standing there when Lin Mu turned. "Why are you still sitting around?"

The disciple immediately straightened. "I was waiting for your instructions."

"Then go back to work. Do you think the sect pays you for lying around?"

"Yes, Elder! Sorry Elder!" The disciple hurried away.

Lin Mu watched him disappear into the office.

Xukong’s voice came through his mind. "You are enjoying this."

"I am surviving."

"You almost made him apologize for merely existing."

"He bumped into me."

"He barely touched you."

"That isn’t the point. I am an Elder!" Lin Mu said, fully taking on the identity of Zhenyu.

Xukong laughed while Lin Mu continued through the corridor, maintaining his stern expression until he was far enough away that the disciple could no longer see him. Only then did the corner of his mouth rise.

The encounter had taught him something valuable.

People did not expect an elder to explain himself and that was the key. As long as Lin Mu behaved as though everyone else should already know who he was, most people would hesitate before questioning him.

His height and physique already made him imposing, while the Silver Mirage Circlet provided the appearance he needed. The Aura and Zhenyu’s token completed the impression. He only needed to maintain confidence.

Still, Lin Mu had another problem as the female elders were still searching. He could sense them moving through the administrative sections.

"They’re persistent."

Xukong chuckled. "Perhaps they are searching for the mysterious person who appeared in their bathhouse."

Lin Mu’s expression darkened. "Please stop reminding me."

"You should have seen your face."

"I was thinking about the archive."

"Of course."

Lin Mu ignored him and continued walking.

The encounter had also given him useful information about the current layout. The old routes had indeed changed, which explained why Zhenyu’s directions had brought him somewhere different from what he expected.

The core structure still existed, though, and that meant his old information remained useful. He eventually reached another junction and this time there were no people nearby.

Lin Mu examined the walls as a faint smile appeared.

"Here." The formation structure was different.

This section had several older layers beneath the newer ones. The modern Records Division had been built around the ancient structure rather than completely replacing it. Lin Mu placed his hand against the wall and his spatial perception spread inward.

A hidden passage appeared within his senses.

"Found it." He quietly used Phase.

The wall resisted for a moment. Then the ancient formation recognized the spatial coordinates of the hidden passage in the token and allowed him through. Lin Mu disappeared and several corridors later, he emerged inside a deeper archive.

This place was much quieter as there were fewer people. The records here were a lot older. Lin Mu looked around and felt a faint sense of satisfaction.

"Now this looks like an archive." He released his immortal sense as rows of ancient records stretched far into the distance.

The information concerning the early history of the sect was finally within reach. Lin Mu adjusted his robes and his expression became stern once more.

"Time to see what they have been hiding."

Far behind him, the female elders were still searching the administrative section. One of them eventually entered the office where Lin Mu had first appeared.

"Did anyone see someone new?"

The disciples shook their heads and one of them hesitated. Then he remembered the enormous elder who had suddenly appeared in the corridor.

He raised his hand. "I did see an elder."

The female elder immediately looked toward him. "What elder?"

The disciple swallowed. "I don’t know."

"You don’t know?"

"He was very large. He was wearing elder robes. He scolded me for bumping into him."

The female elder frowned. "Did he give his name?"

The disciple shook his head. "No."

"His identity token?"

The disciple’s expression became awkward. "I didn’t ask."

The female elder stared at him. "You didn’t ask?"

The disciple lowered his head. "He was an elder."

The female elder remained silent.

The disciple quietly added, "He seemed very angry."

The elder sighed. "Of course he did."

She waved her hand. "Continue your work."

The disciple watched her leave and after a moment, he muttered to himself.

"What just happened?" He still had no idea that he had just met a man who had been dead for more than one hundred thousand years.

And Lin Mu, meanwhile, had already vanished into the deepest part of the archives, completely unaware that his first performance as Junior Elder Zhenyu had succeeded far more easily than he had expected.
