Chapter 4935: Missed
Meanwhile, Feng Jiu, disguised in plain clothes, entered the city with Mu Chen, Hao’er, and Song Mi’er. They blended in seamlessly, strolling through the streets without drawing any attention.
After all, clad in the most commonplace attire, their cultivation and aura concealed, and their appearances entirely transformed, they blended in as seamlessly as any random passerby. No one would give them a second glance.
“Mother, let’s rest here tonight. We’ll continue our journey tomorrow,” Hao’er whispered softly, glancing around at the surroundings. His eyes flickered when he spotted the cotton candy. “If my little sister were here, she’d definitely want to try that cotton candy.”
At that moment, the sister he spoke of, Yue’er, was buried in a feast of delicious dishes. Completely oblivious to the scene unfolding on the street below, she had no idea that the mother she longed for was right there, just downstairs.
“This pork knuckle is so good!” Yue’er mumbled, stuffing a piece of meat into her mouth with rice.
Old Predecessor Guo chuckled. “Take your time, no one’s rushing you.” He ladled her a bowl of soup. “Here, have some broth so you don’t choke.”
“Mmm,” Yue’er mumbled in response, continuing to pick at a stewed dish on the table.
Down on the main street, Feng Jiu and the others walked past. After glancing around, Song Mi’er suggested, “Master, there’s an inn up ahead. Let’s rest there first!”
“Alright, we’ll rest here today. We might as well see what we need to buy and get everything sorted.” Feng Jiu nodded in agreement and headed toward the inn with her.
While eating, Yue’er suddenly felt as if she heard her mother’s voice near her. She paused her chopsticks and looked around, but saw no trace of her mother’s signature red robe. With the street bustling with people and chaotic voices, she began to wonder if it had been her imagination. After all, she hadn’t spotted her mother’s familiar figure anywhere on the street.
“What’s wrong?” Old Predecessor Guo asked, also looking toward the street.
“Nothing,” Yue’er shook her head, her small face slightly furrowed. Her previously hearty appetite vanished, replaced by a sense of loss.
Seeing she didn’t wish to elaborate, Old Predecessor Guo didn’t press further. “Then try this,” he said, “it tastes quite good.” He proceeded to place some of the delicious food into her bowl.
After walking a short distance, Feng Jiu suddenly stopped. She felt as though a familiar aura lingered nearby, yet when she scanned her surroundings, she saw no familiar faces or objects.
Mu Chen sensed her unease and looked up, asking, “Mother, what’s wrong?”
“It just feels like there’s a familiar presence nearby,” Feng Jiu murmured softly. Her gaze swept the area once more, but she found nothing. She could only chuckle to herself, “I’m just overthinking things.”
With that, she led the children toward the inn.
Shortly after Feng Jiu and the others entered the inn, Old Predecessor Guo emerged from the restaurant with Yue’er, heading toward the residence of his old friend’s family. Their path diverged from Feng Jiu’s group.
When the old man and the child came to a halt before an imposing gate, Yue’er watched as he reached out to knock on the door ring. After the crisp sound of “knock, knock, knock” echoed, he withdrew his hand and stood quietly, waiting. Finally, the gate opened a narrow crack from within.
