Chapter 4995: React

Chapter 4995: ReactEditor: Misty Cloud Translations

After Hao’er and the others drew near, they didn’t reveal themselves immediately. Instead, they hid partially behind the trees, observing the scene ahead. The large tree was incredibly lush, its branches and leaves spreading like a giant umbrella. Vines grew and twisted around the trunk, with some monkeys clinging to the vines, swinging and leaping between the trees, emitting squeaking sounds.

"Probably less than seventy," Muchen estimated the monkeys. It was indeed a group, but not an overwhelming number.

"Huh? That larger monkey sitting up there actually has others grooming it." Yue’er watched with curiosity as the big monkey sat atop the tree, flanked by two smaller ones crouching beside it.

Hao’er glanced over and whispered, "That one is probably the monkey king. Groups like this usually have a leader."

"Oh."

Yue’er blinked, watching as the king monkey wiped a fruit on its body before popping it into its mouth. It glanced left and right, then suddenly fixed its gaze on them. Instantly, it leaped up, baring its teeth in a snarl as it hurled the half-eaten fruit toward them.

"Oh no, we’re spotted!" Yue’er cried, leaping out.

Hao’er and Muchen also sprang forward, positioning themselves beside Yue’er. Noticing the two Jingwei behind them about to follow, Hao’er said, "You two stay back. The three of us can handle this."

"That monkey’s reflexes are lightning-fast. The three of you might not stand a chance," one Jingwei said, looking at them with concern. Though their skills were indeed impressive, three people with six hands against that group of monkeys—they feared they might be overwhelmed.

"It’s alright. If we can’t handle it, you can come out and help us then," Yue’er said with a smile, already gripping a dagger in her hand. She fixed her gaze on the monkey swinging toward them on a vine, then leaped forward. Instead of dodging, she charged straight at it.

Seeing this, the two Jingwei felt their breath catch in their throats, hearts racing.

The next moment, the other two also leapt forward. Their agile movements were no less nimble than those of the Golden Silk Monkeys. Watching their swift, decisive strikes, the two Jingwei took a deep breath and slowly exhaled.

It seemed their worries were unfounded. The three of them should be more than capable of handling this group of monkeys.

So, they held back, retreating to watch from behind a tree. They reasoned that if their intervention was truly needed, they could always step in later.

The trio darted forward, using vines to evade the monkeys’ strikes or leap onto branches. They had chosen to confront this troop of Golden Silk Monkeys specifically to hone their reflexes in the chaos of battle. Outnumbered and facing agile opponents, this scenario should push their reaction times to the limit.

Hao’er leapt from a branch, his dagger flashing toward the monkey king. The ape, who had been watching and calling from the treetops, saw the blade coming and instantly bared its claws. With a shrill cry, it lunged at Hao’er, swift as the wind yet carrying a fierce, cutting momentum.

"Rip!"

The monkey’s claws tore through Hao’er’s clothing, but her skin remained unharmed. Hao’er counterattacked swiftly, forcing the monkey king to retreat. Having missed its strike, the monkey king showed no desire to linger in battle. It turned and leaped to the other side of the tree. Seeing this, Hao’er followed immediately.
