Chapter 1299: WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN THE TWO (I)
LUO JIN was in a gym, finishing a set of pull-ups. He gripped the metal bar with both hands, shoulder-width apart. He pulled his body up until his chin cleared the bar, his back and arm muscles tightening and bunching with the effort. Sweat dripped from his hairline, ran down the side of his face, and traced the lines of his neck and shoulders. His tank top was damp and stuck to his chest and back. He lowered himself back down in a controlled motion and dropped to the floor, breathing hard.
He picked up his water bottle from the floor and took a long drink. His family's house had a well-equipped private gym, but he had driven here instead. He didn't want to be alone right now. This particular gym was highly recommended online and known for being busy. He had picked it specifically because he knew there would be many people around, with the noise of weights clanging and music playing. He needed that constant background noise. It helped stop him from thinking about things he didn't want to think about.
After his last, disastrous meeting with Su Yuqi, he had been irritated, and his mood kept swinging up and down. It didn't help that he was almost always alone in their big house. At least school was starting this coming Monday. He could just focus all his attention on studying instead.
He finished his workout and went to the locker room for a quick shower. After he was done, he got dressed. He put on a pair of athletic shorts and a lightweight, zip-up track jacket over his t-shirt.
He left the gym with his gym bag slung over one shoulder. He walked across the parking lot to where his motorcycle was parked. He opened one of the storage compartments on the bike, put the gym bag inside, and closed it. Then he got on the motorcycle, started the engine, and drove off.
As Luo Jin drove back towards their house, he thought about stopping at a drive-thru to grab something for a late lunch. But he changed his mind. He decided it was easier to just eat whatever was at home.
He arrived at the front gate of their house. He was about to press the intercom button to have the gate opened. But just as he reached for it, a taxi pulled up and stopped right in front of the house.
He glanced back and almost fell off his motorcycle when he saw the person getting out of the taxi. It was a woman with dyed purple hair pulled up into a messy bun. She wore a faded black band t-shirt, ripped black skinny jeans, and heavy-looking combat boots.
"Y-Yuqi?" he called out, his voice coming out a bit strangled, unsure if he was seeing things. Because why the heck would she be here?
Su Yuqi walked towards him as the taxi drove off. The closer she got, the clearer it became that he wasn't just seeing things or imagining it. Su Yuqi was really standing there, right in front of their house.
"Hey," she said, stopping in front of him. She looked his motorcycle over and gave a small nod of approval. "Nice ride."
"You—" he started, his brain struggling to catch up. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Wasn't she the one who had basically ended things between them? Okay, maybe she hadn't said those exact words, but their entire conversation had pointed to that. So how could she just show up here now, commenting on his motorcycle like nothing had happened between them?
Su Yuqi stared at him for a moment, as if she was trying to memorize his face. "First, I want to apologize for all the hurt I caused you. I was... selfish and insensitive. I only thought about doing what I believed was right, without asking for your opinion or thinking about how you'd feel. That was wrong of me. Making a choice for both of us on my own was wrong of me." She took a small breath. "I was so scared of a future that might never even happen that I was willing to give up on the present. That was stupid."
"Damn right it was," Luo Jin growled out before he could even stop himself.
He was surprised at first when she started apologizing. It was the absolute last thing he expected her to say. But then, right after the surprise, a wave of hot anger hit him. Because seriously, what the hell? What was the point of hurting him like she did if she was just going to show up now and say sorry?
"What," he asked, his voice heavy with sarcasm. "After over two weeks, you suddenly figure out you made a mistake? And now you're back here to, what, just pretend we can go back to how things were before?"
Su Yuqi was silent for a few seconds. When she looked down at the ground, seeming unsure what to say, Luo Jin almost gave in. He almost said that yes, they could just go back to how they were. So he clenched his jaw hard to stop himself from saying it.
"I still think my conclusion was basically right," she said, finally looking back up at him. "What was wrong was how I told you. The way I went about it."
Luo Jin gritted his teeth hard when he heard that. "Then what the hell are you even doing here if you still feel the exact same way?"
"I came because I believe in the way I feel for you," she said in a clear voice. She looked him right in the eye as she spoke. "And that means I need to have real faith in the way you feel for me as well. I was wrong to decide for both of us. So I'm here to make a proposal. A proposal about how we might find a way forward."
Luo Jin wanted to explode. He wanted to shout a string of expletives. But because he was a complete sucker for her, he just clenched his fists and asked, his voice flat, "What proposal?"
