Chapter 3136: Wen Xing?

Chapter 3136: Wen Xing?

Ning Shu ignored the strange looks that she was receiving. After all, why should she stay silent while she was being harassed? Anyhow, if she was subjected to such unwanted attention, then her assailant should be, too.

She shouldn’t have to bear it alone. Her assailant should suffer as well.

Her assailant rushed off the subway at the next station.

A man who had been sitting across from Ning Shu, reading a newspaper, lowered it and said, “You can take my seat.”

He had been holding the newspaper up to his face the whole time, so Ning Shu couldn’t tell if he’d been reading or just resting.

He hadn’t even glanced up at the earlier commotion.

Ning Shu and the man exchanged surprised looks.

“Duan Xue?”

“Wen Xing?”

What a coincidence! According to the original host’s memory, Wen Xing was a co-worker of hers, but he worked in a different department so they rarely ever interacted with each other.

Wen Xing stood up and said, “Please, sit.”

Then, he took over Ning Shu’s place and stood while holding onto the handrail.

Ning Shu didn’t bother to be polite either and sat down. She said, “Thanks, I didn’t know we shared the same route.”

Wen Xing folded up his newspaper.

He wasn’t much of a talker, and since their jobs didn’t overlap, they weren’t really familiar with each other.

Ning Shu leaned back in her seat and observed Wen Xing. He seemed different from how the entrustor remembered.

Though his face was plain, he had a warm and gentle demeanor that overshadowed his unremarkable appearance.

It was hard to describe, but some people just had that aura.

Ning Shu felt that Wen Xing was no longer the same person, somehow.

Their eyes met, and in his gaze, Ning Shu saw a calm, flowing clarity. For a brief moment, she saw another face.

He really wasn’t the original Wen Xing.

“Why are you staring at me?” Wen Xing asked.

“You’ve changed, haven’t you?” Ning Shu replied.

Wen Xing’s expression remained calm. “I’ve always been like this. Besides, how would you know if I’ve changed?”

Such a wordsmith.

Ning Shu casually flipped her hair and smiled. “As someone trying to settle in this city, I make sure to know all the local men.”

The original host’s goal had been to take root in the city. To do so, she had two options, which were to buy a house and gain local residency, or to marry a local.

She had chosen to buy her own home, by first gathering enough for a down payment, and then paying off the mortgage monthly.

That way, she would have an asset under her own name and a home to call her own,

Duan Xue had worked long and hard to realize that material wealth wasn’t everything, but it was an essential criterion that had to be fulfilled in order to enjoy any kind of spiritual fulfillment.

Only after she had financial security could she think about love and marriage. As such, even if she wanted to marry a local, that could only happen after she had already had her own assets.

This was especially true in a bustling city like this one, where the locals often felt superior and looked down on people from outside the city.

It had been a long time since Duan Xue had last been in a relationship, anyway. It was too much of a waste of time and, more importantly, money.

Even if a man treated her, who knew what would happen after that?

Ning Shu admired Duan Xue’s dedication to making money. Duan Xue tracked every expense in a little notebook.

Yet despite her frugality, Duan Xue still managed to be a fashionable white-collar worker. She always bought expensive, classic pieces that could be mixed and matched to create a refined look.

Indeed, rather than buying cheap clothes that wouldn’t hold up, it was better to invest in quality.

Every goddess had her struggles. This was especially true for the ones who were both hardworking and beautiful, the ones who made it seem like they could accomplish anything effortlessly.

Wen Xing looked a bit surprised at Ning Shu’s comment but simply replied, “I’m just me. Who else could I be?”

Ning Shu didn’t push him further. As long as it didn’t interfere with her task, it didn’t matter.
