Chapter 3415: Combustion (4)
Ning Shu rested for a while with her eyes closed, quietly focusing her energy as she began to cultivate Unsurpassable Martial Arts.
To her surprise, she found herself unable to use the water ordinance.
It seemed this world imposed a strong level of suppression.
The modern plane was a world without any real power system, and the suppression here was immense.
Even her Unsurpassable Martial Arts cultivation was heavily suppressed. In other planes, by this point, fiery yang energy would’ve already surged through her body.
But now, only a faint trace of fiery yang energy stirred within her.
The plane’s suppression was truly overwhelming.
Ning Shu silently sighed. This was a world of hot weapons. Countries competed based on their nuclear arsenals.
It looked like she needed to master special forces skills as well.
After driving for a while, the vehicle finally reached the border troops’ stationed location.
They drove straight into the military camp.
Song Yi got out of the car and said to his squad, “Get some rest. There’s more work to do later.”
“Yes, sir,” Ning Shu and the others responded, saluting Song Yi.
Ning Shu arrived at her assigned room, freshened up a bit, and looked at her reflection in the mirror.
Wu Jing’s face was plain, and as a special forces soldier who’d braved wind and rain, her skin was rough.
She had no time for skincare. Her expression was also firm and resolute, lacking the soft femininity of most women.
Compared to Wu Xianrou, Wu Jing was practically a rugged man.
In other people’s eyes, comparing Wu Jing to Wu Xianrou probably seemed like pure fantasy and sheer delusion.
Ning Shu patted her own face to relax the muscles a little and gave herself a faint smile.
A person’s esteem didn’t lie in their looks, but in their soul.
Ning Shu held a better impression of Wu Jing than of Wu Xianrou.
She was no longer someone who would judge other people by their appearances. Beautiful things were nice to look at, sure, but a pretty face would fade with time and didn’t count for much.
Ning Shu smiled into the mirror, then sat cross-legged on the small bed.
Her bed here was barely wide enough to roll over in.
She tapped her chin with a finger as she thought about the task.
She had two objectives to fulfill. One, to break up the couple Song Yi and Wu Xianrou; and two, make military achievements and climb the ranks.
From her initial contact, objectively speaking, Song Yi seemed like a decent person.
He was considerate towards his subordinates, took personal responsibility in everything, and clearly had a strong sense of duty as a soldier.
He had a tall, commanding figure, likely all lean muscle.
He was a young officer with plenty of accomplishments under his belt and boundless potential ahead.
But then he got all tangled up in love and romance and started acting small-minded, losing that commanding military aura.
There was nothing wrong with doting on your wife, but using national resources just so Wu Xianrou could show off every day? That was way too much.
How had Song Yi not been investigated by the state?
But then again, this was a romance-world setting. All the background details were blurred out. In this world, Song Yi was an untouchably brilliant big shot.
Even when women got into catfights, Song Yi would roll up with an entire military squad to support Wu Xianrou. Seriously, what the hell?
Was Wu Xianrou disabled or something? Could she not do anything on her own?
As Ning Shu continued cultivating Unsurpassable Martial Arts, she mulled things over.
Since the entrustor didn’t want to be under Song Yi’s command anymore, then she’d better just focus on doing her job properly.
Ning Shu even suspected that Wu Jing’s desire to achieve merit and rise in the ranks was rooted in her wish to speak with Song Yi as an equal—to no longer be a subordinate beneath him.
There wasn’t just admiration involved here. There was also something more like faith.
Ning Shu smiled calmly. When it came down to it, Wu Jing was really just a simple-hearted young woman.
Her hands were stained with fresh blood, but that was for the country and the lives of countless citizens of the nation.
For a young girl to have such courage and conviction was no easy feat.
But it was unlikely that Wu Jing could ever have the kind of happiness ordinary girls did.
No regular man could understand—much less accept—a girl whose hands were soaked in blood, who had taken lives.
Ning Shu formed a hand seal and began laying out a spirit gathering formation, hoping to draw in some spiritual energy.
Spiritual energy could help heal the body, and Ning Shu had discovered that this body carried many internal injuries.
Special forces training was harsh and caused physical damage. On top of that, injuries sustained during missions only added to the toll.
The brutal conditions of some missions left lasting harm on her body.
It took her considerable effort to complete the spirit gathering formation, but fortunately, they were on the border, where the surroundings weren’t heavily polluted. There were mountains and forests nearby, so there was at least a faint presence of spiritual energy.
A weak trickle of spiritual energy began to flow through Ning Shu’s meridians, and she used all of it to heal the body’s internal injuries.
Even during her period, if a mission called for it, the entrustor would soak in cold water without hesitation.
Everything was done for the mission. She couldn’t be a burden to her fellow squad members.
This was the kind of job that drained one’s life force. By old age, her body would be riddled with problems.
Ning Shu smiled and patted her chest. She thought, ‘Wu Jing, you were truly incredible.’
Moreover, Wu Jing’s final mission had indeed been tainted by Song Yi’s personal motives.
The mission had been extremely dangerous. Everyone who went in did so prepared to die.
Song Yi had essentially used it to avenge Wu Xianrou.
Once caught up in petty romance, one’s world would shrink down to a tiny space—where the only thing left in sight was the other person, where all you could do was stare at them and nothing else.
The spirit gathering formation that Ning Shu had set up collapsed after a short while.
It hadn’t drawn in much spiritual energy at all, and the pitiful amount it’d drawn in was barely enough to even start healing her internal injuries.
So Ning Shu set up another formation. It still didn’t gather much spiritual energy. She used all of it to repair her body.
Under the healing influence of the spiritual energy, she felt much better. The weight dragging her down had lifted significantly.
Ning Shu lay down on the bed, pulled the blanket over herself, and planned to take a short nap.
She had no idea how long she slept before hearing a knock on the door. Though groggy at first, her mind instantly snapped awake, and her eyes flew open.
She’d woken up fast thanks to pure instinct.
These skills had been drilled into her body. Even in her sleep, she could wake and become fully alert in a split second.
The entrustor’s training had been brutal. Her trainers would tell her to sleep, and just as she dozed off, they’d yank her awake again. She never knew when they’d do it, either.
Total nightmare. Seriously, what the hell?
Ning Shu threw off the blanket and rushed to open the door. The one knocking was her fellow squad member, Zhu Yi.
“You were two seconds late to open the door this time. If the squad commander finds out, you’ll be running a kilometre with weights,” Zhu Yi said smugly, giving her a look that practically screamed, ‘Beg me not to snitch and I still won’t cut you any slack.’
Ning Shu asked, “Did the interrogation get any results?”
She shut the door behind her and walked with Zhu Yi to the office.
“Nothing useful. The drivers didn’t know much. The four bodies and the two drivers only had trace amounts of drugs in their systems.”
Zhu Yi scratched his head with a soft rustling sound. “This mission’s a bit dicey. The higher-ups are taking it really seriously, but it’s turning out to be all bark and no bite. The commander is definitely getting an earful.”
The squad under Song Yi had genuine respect for their squad commander.
Song Yi treated his people well. Whenever he received a mission bonus, he would always share a portion of his own with the squad.
He never treated his subordinates’ lives as expendable.
But it seemed like all that goodwill had gone to Wu Xianrou after he married her.
Marriage really could change a person. It could transform someone who once cared for everyone into someone focused only on their own little home.
