Chapter 3423: Combustion (12)
What was there to watch?
Ning Shu flipped through her book, reading ten lines at a glance, while listening to Zhu Yi on the phone.
“What exactly happened?” she asked. “They’re really getting married?”
“Well, the wedding’s almost a certainty. But right now, the hospital’s in complete chaos. Want to come and see for yourself? The pampered heiress playing nursemaid to the squad commander. It’s quite the spectacle.”
Zhu Yi was clearly revelling in the drama.
Ning Shu couldn’t help rolling her eyes. Idiots really were everywhere.
If those two really ended up married, the whole squad would fall apart. She’d see whether Zhu Yi’s future commanding officer would tolerate him sneaking around behind their back to meet women.
“I’ll come and take a look.”
Ning Shu dried her hair, tied it up, changed into her military uniform, and headed for the military hospital to see Song Yi.
She wanted to see for herself what was going on.
Standing at the door of the ward with a fruit basket in hand, she could already hear movement from inside.
She pushed the door open and saw Wu Xianrou looking thoroughly impatient as she fed soup to Song Yi.
The moment Ning Shu entered, the air froze. It was extremely awkward.
Wu Xianrou glanced at Ning Shu, who looked smart and valiant in full uniform, and curled her lip in disdain. She looked like a bloody tomboy.
And this was the woman Song Yi had been rumored to have an affair with?
Wu Xianrou had conveniently forgotten that those very words had once come out of her own mouth.
Selective amnesia, perhaps?
Song Yi greeted her by saying, “You’re here. Has your training fallen behind? Why haven’t you reported to me?”
Ning Shu replied, “I’ve been keeping up with weighted drills every day. You’re recovering from your injury. I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“Drink up. I hope this stuff kills you.”
Wu Xianrou shoved another spoonful of soup towards Song Yi’s mouth.
Ning Shu, with a raised eyebrow: …
Even if he were a stranger, that was no way to treat someone, let alone a soldier injured in the line of duty.
She genuinely couldn’t understand where Wu Xianrou got her bizarre sense of superiority from.
If she didn’t want to marry him, she should be arguing with her father, not dragging herself here in reluctance to ‘take care’ of Song Yi.
Ning Shu couldn’t shake the feeling that Wu Xianrou was jealous, just because Song Yi had asked her about her training.
Song Yi’s mouth was repeatedly stuffed with soup, spoon after spoon.
“This was made by my family’s housekeeper. Eat up and get better quickly so I can finally be free. I’ve never taken care of anyone like this in my life,” Wu Xianrou said resentfully.
Song Yi replied in a cryptic tone, “I’m honored, truly.”
“Damn right you are. So hurry up and recover. Then you can go and talk to my dad and set things straight.”
Wu Xianrou pursed her lips as she jabbed the spoon towards his mouth, so forcefully that his teeth audibly clinked against the metal.
Ning Shu: …
She thought, ‘Well, Song Yi, enjoy it while it lasts.’
Could she even call this tsundere behaviour?
No, not really. At best, it was just bratty and overbearing.
With an unreadable expression, Ning Shu stepped fully into the ward with her fruit basket and walked over to Old Two’s bed. “Feeling any better?”
“More or less. Almost there,” he replied. “Help me get transferred to a different room later, will you? I shouldn’t be in the way of their romantic development.”
Old Two was a calm and reliable man. He was not particularly outstanding in any one area, but with a rock-solid foundation in all aspects.
Ning Shu figured Old Two just thought the ward was too noisy.
Zhu Yi, on the other hand, looked as if he were watching a drama unfold—munching fruit while soaking in the show.
“You’re here, come over!” Zhu Yi beckoned Ning Shu over. His eyes were practically sparkling. He then pointed at the fruit basket and said, “Hand me a couple of oranges.”
Ning Shu passed him two oranges and sat down on the chair beside his bed. “Looks like you’re quite content to stay here at the hospital. Getting entertained here is far better than working, isn’t it?”
Zhu Yi lowered his voice conspiratorially, “You’ve no idea how entertaining it’s been. It’s non-stop chaos. I reckon the squad commander’s never getting out of this witch’s grasp.”
‘Witch,’ huh. That was a colorful description.
But truthfully, girls with that kind of temper weren’t easy for most men to handle.
Especially when they came from powerful families. They were blunt to the point of being brutal, so blunt they could slash your pride to ribbons.
You’d end up kneeling at the feet of the ‘witch,’ while she remained completely oblivious.
And the worst part? She wouldn’t even realize she had said something wrong.
Ning Shu peeled an orange and ate it slowly as she watched Song Yi and Wu Xianrou at the far side of the room.
“Have you figured out what kind of person Wu Xianrou is?” she asked Zhu Yi.
Zhu Yi rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Pretty domineering little thing. The squad commander’s definitely going to be henpecked in the future.”
Ning Shu chuckled. “In that case, you might not be able to meet up with your online dates anymore.”
“What?” Hearing this potential threat to his personal freedoms, Zhu Yi bristled instantly. “That’s my one hobby in life!”
He was an adult, after all. What was the harm in cutting loose once in a while?
Besides, Zhu Yi had never revealed his real identity online.
“Do you really think someone like Miss Wu, as controlling as she is, would let her husband go off on missions every day? You might be transferred to a different squad, and I doubt the new squad commander would let you keep sneaking off for those little ‘adventures’ of yours,” Ning Shu said, half-gloatingly.
Zhu Yi: …
“You have no camaraderie,” Zhu Yi grumbled while giving her a look. “What am I supposed to do? I don’t want to switch squads. We’ve been doing missions together for years. We know each other inside and out. If I move to another squad, I’d get sidelined for sure.”
Ning Shu shrugged. “Can’t help you there. We can’t exactly break them up. They’re ‘true love,’ remember?”
He’d get obliterated by the dazzling light of true love.
Zhu Yi squinted at her suspiciously. “Why do I feel like you’re trying to use me as a pawn? Send me in as the bad guy to sabotage their relationship?”
Ning Shu gave him a withering look. “Please. If I wanted to scheme, the last person I’d use is you. Even if those two don’t end up married, it’s not like Song Yi and I would ever be a thing.”
Zhu Yi rubbed his chin. “Being unable to explore romantic connections with beautiful women… that’s a real problem. A serious problem.”
“You’re going to get yourself killed eventually,” Ning Shu said with a scoff. “And not even earn martyr honours while you’re at it.”
“At this rate, you’re going to end up with no friends. Girls should act like girls.”
Zhu Yi jerked his chin towards Wu Xianrou. “Pretty. A little temperamental. That’s what makes them cute.”
Ning Shu snorted. “If I acted like Wu Xianrou during a mission, would you still find it cute?”
Zhu Yi immediately pulled a face like he was constipated. “Don’t joke like that, seriously.”
“Exactly. You men are just…”
Ning Shu rolled her eyes and glanced over at Wu Xianrou and Song Yi.
Some relationships really did feel destined, like tangled threads that couldn’t easily be cut.
Even if it meant defying public opinion, they’d still choose to be together. And in this case, it wasn’t even about defying anyone. Song Yi had the full backing of his prospective father-in-law.
Chances were, Political Commissar Wu knew exactly what kind of daughter he had.
It wouldn’t be easy to find someone willing to tolerate her, cherish her, and have the strength to handle her.
But Song Yi was responsible, capable, and lived a clean life with no bad habits.
Political Commissar Wu was clearly trying to reel him in and push him straight into his daughter’s arms.
It was a true father-in-law power move. This was divine-level support!
