Chapter 3525: Owner (6)
Why was he in such a rush to leave? Ning Shu was truly at a loss for words. He deserved to stay single forever. The girl had invited him to stay for lunch and even offered to let him meet her family, yet he had lost his nerve and wanted to run away.
Opportunities were fleeting.
Ning Shu backed away, refusing to budge.
“Beibei…” Ying Zhi was on the verge of losing his temper.
“Maybe Beibei is still thirsty. I’ll pour her some more water.” Chen Hong felt for the bowl and poured another serving.
As Ning Shu lapped up the water, Ying Zhi’s watch announced the time. It was already eleven o’clock in the morning.
“It’s already so late. Please stay for lunch. My parents and my brother and sister-in-law will be home any minute.” Chen Hong urged him once more.
This was likely the final offer. Things usually didn’t go past a third attempt, so if Ying Zhi still decided to leave, the relationship was probably dead in the water. It wasn’t like the girl was desperate to cling to him.
Ning Shu looked at Ying Zhi with a gaze that screamed ‘don’t let me down.’ He needed to seize this last chance before it vanished.
Perhaps he finally caught on, because this time Ying Zhi hesitated before saying, “Then I’ll trouble you.”
From a social standpoint, it would be uncomfortable to refuse someone three times in a row.
“It’s no trouble,” Chen Hong said in a lighthearted tone. She called her parents and told them to buy a few extra dishes for lunch because they had a guest.
Ying Zhi patted Ning Shu’s head. “You little…”
Ying Zhi sat there restlessly, waiting for Chen Hong’s family to return. Chen Hong lived with her entire family. The apartment didn’t look very large, so it couldn’t have been easy for five people to squeeze in together.
The sound of a key turning in the lock drifted over. Hearing voices at the door, Ying Zhi stood up nervously.
A swarm of people entered the house. Ying Zhi was so nervous that his whole body began to shake. Since he couldn’t see, he didn’t know what to do.
“Hello, Uncle. Hello, Auntie.” Fortunately, Ying Zhi was wearing sunglasses, so no one could tell where he was looking.
“Hello. Have a seat.” Chen Hong’s father seemed fairly amiable. Her mother and sister-in-law went into the kitchen to prepare lunch.
Her father and brother sat across from Ying Zhi, while Ning Shu lay on the floor by Ying Zhi’s feet.
“Are you blind as well?” Chen Hong’s father asked.
“Yes, I am.”
“This dog is a guide dog, right?” Chen Hong’s brother looked at Ning Shu, picked up a piece of fruit, and tossed it toward her. “Go fetch!”
The fruit rolled to Ning Shu’s feet.
Ning Shu: …
Get lost!
Ning Shu nudged the fruit back with her paw. It rolled right back to the brother’s feet.
“This dog is quite smart.” The brother picked up the fruit, tossing it up and down in his hand.
“Did you come here to see Chen Hong?” her father asked.
“She burned her hand, so I came to check on her,” Ying Zhi said, sitting up straight like a schoolboy answering a teacher’s question.
“Just to see her? Do you have some kind of designs on my daughter?” her father asked bluntly.
Ying Zhi’s face immediately began to flush. He stammered, unable to find the words, before Chen Hong’s father continued. “It’s natural for men and women to marry once they come of age. Although my daughter’s vision is a bit blurry, I hope she can find someone who will treat her well—a healthy person. They should be able to look after each other. How are two blind people supposed to live together? If something happens, the other person won’t be able to help at all.”
These words were very blunt. He was essentially stating that he would not marry his daughter to another visually impaired person and wanted to find her a sighted husband.
Ying Zhi was practically speechless after hearing this. His lips trembled, and his face turned deathly pale.
He suddenly stood up. “I can be good to Chen Hong. Except for the fact that I can’t see, I can do everything else.”
Her father shook his head. “There are many things you cannot do. You two are not a good match.”
“Please give me a chance, Uncle. I can definitely do it,” Ying Zhi insisted, his face red and his neck veins bulging as he tried to prove himself.
“When you get married, life is all about the mundane details. Can you cook? Can you do laundry? Can you take Chen Hong anywhere she needs to go?” Her father shook his head. “In short, there are too many inconveniences in life. I want my daughter to be with a normal person.”
“I can do all of those things. I definitely can. I’ve lived alone like this for so many years,” Ying Zhi said anxiously.
“Living alone and living as a couple are two different things, especially when both people have physical disadvantages.” Her father rejected him again, leaving Ying Zhi feeling discouraged and powerless.
“How did you meet my daughter?” her father asked.
“We are colleagues at the massage shop,” Ying Zhi said. “I’m a massage therapist. I earn a monthly salary. Even if Chen Hong doesn’t work in the future, I can support her.”
Ying Zhi was making a desperate struggle, hoping his financial situation might move her father.
“I see. Actually, I never approved of my daughter working in such a dangerous place. People who can’t see are always getting bullied,” her father said.
By saying this, he was implying that Chen Hong should quit her job. If she stopped working there, the two of them would basically have no contact. It seemed her father was determined not to let anything develop between Ying Zhi and Chen Hong.
Ying Zhi’s face paled, and his spirit seemed to wither. He managed to say, “I have some things to take care of at home. I think I should leave now.”
Ning Shu stood up and led Ying Zhi toward the door. Ying Zhi felt for the lock, opened the door, and prepared to go.
“Stay and eat before you leave,” Chen Hong’s brother said.
“Thank you, but no. I have an emergency at home. I have to go.”
Ying Zhi was hurting so much that he couldn’t bear to stay a moment longer, let alone eat.
As they went downstairs, Ying Zhi’s movements were clumsy, and he nearly tumbled down the steps.
Chen Hong’s brother watched him go. “He’s a blind man who traveled all this way to see my sister. It couldn’t have been easy.”
Her father replied, “Things that are simple for normal people are incredibly difficult for him. Is he supposed to be praised or treated like he’s giving us a great gift just because he managed it? He’s exhausting himself and everyone around him.
“It’s hard on him and hard on others.”
The brother shrugged. “What if Sister likes him?”
“Dad, look, since her vision isn’t good, if you try to find her a normal person, they might just look down on her. It could work if the two of them support each other.
“Someone of the same kind understands the struggle better. We should see what she thinks.”
Chen Hong’s brother wasn’t as strictly opposed to the idea.
“Dad, Ying Zhi and I are just colleagues. He came to visit me, and I asked him to stay for a meal. What are you all talking about?” Chen Hong felt like she wanted to disappear. Their relationship hadn’t even reached that point yet, and here was her father trying to break them apart. It was so embarrassing.
“Didn’t that kid ask me to give him a chance?” the father said, framing his behavior as a test.
