Chapter 2614: Challenge
Sam looked at Shimmy with the same smile. But Shimmy could have sworn that he saw a faint glint of melancholy in those bright eyes...
"War...War is just a game. A game played with ambitions, interests and greed as stakes...And the innocents...the soldiers, the civilians...who often don’t even know why they are fighting...pay to make sure these stakes of the players are protected...
The battlefield turns into a crucible of metamorphosis. Several people evolve, some crumble, some transform, and some disappear completely.
The death, blood, destruction...
War is beautiful. Its powerful, dark, bleak. But despite all the lives it takes, its still full of life. Its truly beautiful."
Sam shook his head, and brought himself back to the current situation.
Shimmy was shocked, and also thrown into thought.
"War is beautiful? In all my life, this is the first time I heard such a description. You are either an idiot or a madman. What are you?"
"I am neither an idiot, nor a madman. I am Sam. Just Sam."
"You are saying as if that’s supposed to mean something. As if your name itself has some significance."
"It does, because its my name. I could be named Rock, dirt and sand and it would still hold the same significance. My mindset, thought process and I are beyond any definitions that you could comprehend.
I can only be defined and comprehended as myself."
"What an arrogant fellow, you are? You have no sense of humility do you?" Shimmy almost wanted to laugh out loud. But at the same time, he knew and understood how serious Sam is.
Whatever nonsense that Sam just spewed...he believed it. And the problem is that sam seemed to have enough competence to back it up.
Now he needs to find a way to negate it, so that the war will go back to its original track.
"I can’t attack you. If I could, I would just kill you and leave this place. Without you, the war wouldn’t have gone this way." Shimmy said his truest thoughts out loud.
Sam smiled and some gears turned in his head.
"I have a way."
"A way for what?"
"To get rid of me."
"What the hell are you even saying?"
"We can’t fight as cultivators. But we can fight as strategists...I have a game. Hit pause on the current skirmishes, let the big boys continue fighting. Meanwhile you and I will fight a game of strategy.
Your pick fifteen people from your end. I will pick fifteen people from mine. It doesn’t matter what cultivation level they are at. Their experience, expertise, mages, warriors...it doesn’t matter.
Just bring them in. I have a board game here...
A strategy board game. You on one end and I on the other, we will fight in a virtual space...We can draw up the terms of contract and winner gets what they want.
I will give you the information on the gameplay rules and regulations. You can have a couple of days with it.
What do you say?"
"What are you playing at Sam? Did you really get cocky enough to challenge me in straight strategy match?
The only reason you won against me is because of your intellect in terms of technology. I cannot see through the gaps of your execution, because I do not know what kind of tech you possess and how it could be used.
Do you really think you would have such a landslide victory, if you didn’t do that?"
"If you believe so, then you would have a proper chance to prove your theory right. I am challenging you right here, right now.
You can state your terms for your victory."
"What if I tell you to defect hastin village and join the alliance."
"I would do so."
"What if I asked you to kill yourself?"
"That’s possible as well."
"We will draft a clear soul contract."
"We can."
"Okay give me the details and a copy of your game and how it would work."
Sam provided everything. And Shimmy went back to the base along with them. Like Sam said, he stopped the skirmishes.
Sam called back his friends and explained the change of plans to them.
"You think he would agree? There is no way in hell, he would right?" Philip asked in surprise. Someone challenging Sam in the game of divine chess?
...
Meanwhile, shimmy examined the rules, and the game play of chess. Sam gave him videos, rule book, and a model board with all the pieces.
With his divine senses and innate intellect, it didn’t take long for him to figure out the game. He got it pretty easily.
He played with some other people and beat them all. He even use a simulator Sam gave to experience the full version fo the game.
And after a couple of days, he got so confident with it. He called for the best fighters from all over the alliance.
He gathered the cream of the crop and sent the challenge contract.
Sam held the contract and smiled.
"This guy bit the bait too deep. Take a look at this."
Sam’s friends took the contract and they didn’t know if they should laugh or cry. It was such an outrageous...
"This guy is too greedy. He really thinks that he can win, doesn’t he?"
The contract states that Sam has to step away from the war. He doesn’t have to actively help the alliance. But he has to give up his technology. All of it. And everything that he could possibly invent in the next ten years.
And in those years, he has to stay at Darkhan and work with Shimmy to develop this place.
Even Sam couldn’t believe himself.
"Does he really think he can swallow all my tech? That would cause at least a dozen more wars between these factions and the whole planet will turn into a graveyard."
"Well, at least he does know what’s more important. But I am more interested in what you are going to write." Philip asked with a smile.
