Gu Jiao sensed the sharp killing intent and sword qi, her brows furrowing tightly as she warned, "Be careful!"
But there was no time to dodge. Gritting his teeth, Gu Chengfeng suddenly pushed Gu Jiao and the Emperor forward onto the rooftop ahead.
It was better for the sword qi to land on his legs alone than for Gu Jiao to suffer injuries along with him.
However, the pain he anticipated never came. On the other side of the rooftop, a dark blue figure descended from the sky, slashing out a sword qi of his own. The attack intercepted the incoming strike, protecting Gu Chengfeng, who had been just a breath away from losing both legs.
Gu Chengfeng turned his head to look and was instantly dumbfounded. "Elder brother?"
Gu Changqing struck out with a palm, sending him flying onto the rooftop where Gu Jiao and the Emperor had landed.
"Leave now." He said calmly, his gaze wary as he locked onto the black-robed man standing two feet away.
Gu Chengfeng was so shocked that his mouth hung open in disbelief.
El, el, el, elder… elder brother?!
Wasn't he supposed to be lying in the intensive care unit all this time?
When did he wake up?
And how did he know about their operation tonight?
Gu Jiao frowned slightly, also feeling puzzled. However, her reaction was not as intense as Gu Chengfeng's, perhaps because she was naturally more composed.
It had been nearly a month since Gu Changqing was injured. While his condition had gradually stabilized, he had never regained consciousness in her presence.
Even the Imperial Advisor had assured her that he had not awakened.
Had he just woken up?
Thinking back to Ye Qing’s unexpected arrival, Gu Jiao speculated that the Imperial Advisor must have somehow learned about her plan to break into the cold palace tonight. He had likely arranged for Ye Qing to assist her while also sending the newly awakened Gu Changqing to rescue her.
But… since when did the Imperial Advisor and Gu Changqing become so close?
"Go!"
Gu Jiao made a swift decision.
Gu Chengfeng hesitated, glancing worriedly at Gu Changqing’s back. "But elder brother—"
Gu Jiao spoke with cool precision. "An Hun’s target is the Emperor. As long as we take the Emperor away, An Hun will immediately come after us."
In other words, this was the only way to ensure Gu Changqing’s escape.
Gu Chengfeng turned back to take one last look at his elder brother, his eyes growing red with emotion. He wiped them roughly, then grabbed Gu Jiao and the Emperor, leaping into the endless night.
Only when he could no longer sense their presence did Gu Changqing quietly exhale in relief.
"The medicine I gave you can temporarily suppress your aura, making it impossible for others to detect any changes in you. However, you’re still gravely injured. Even with my secret rehabilitation and training, it’s impossible for you to recover your full strength in such a short time."
The Imperial Advisor’s words echoed in his mind as Gu Changqing tightened his grip on his sword.
He was only standing now because of the medicine, and its effects would last for just one incense stick’s worth of time. Once that time was up, he would lose all ability to resist.
He couldn't afford to engage An Hun in direct combat. Doing so would only accelerate the depletion of the medicine’s effects.
An Hun’s eyes narrowed slightly behind his mask. "Ah, now I remember. You’re Long Aotian. I struck you with my sword, and yet, you’re still alive. You sure are hard to kill."
Gu Changqing responded coldly, "My life may be tough, but yours may not be."
An Hun sneered. "Even if my sword strike didn’t kill you, it must have crippled your foundation. Let me guess how you are standing here as if nothing happened. Did that Imperial Advisor of yours use poison on you and turn you into a death warrior?"
Gu Changqing’s pupils constricted sharply!
An Hun continued, "But that’s odd. I don’t sense a death warrior’s aura on you."
Consuming poison did not necessarily mean becoming a death warrior. There were two types of death warriors. The first learned death warriors techniques from childhood. The Dragon Shadow Guards and most mercenary death warriors fell into this category.
The second one involved taking a poison that had no known cure, then cultivating death warrior techniques. Both An Hun and Shi Tian belonged to this second type.
The first method had the advantage of being relatively safe. However, it was age-restricted; beyond five years old, training would no longer be effective, and even then, their strength couldn’t compare to that of the second type.
The second method, in contrast, had no age limit. But the drawback? Out of every hundred people who took the poison, ninety-nine would die.
"A normal person would struggle to survive after being poisoned like that. Given the severity of your injuries, it should have been even more impossible for you to endure the toxicity. But if you didn’t use that poison, then how did you recover?"
An Hun’s curiosity was completely piqued. "Tell me the answer, and as a condition, I can let you go."
Gu Changqing replied with a meaningful smile, "You really want to know? Then how about this—you answer a few of my questions first. If your answers satisfy me, I’ll tell you."
"Young man, stalling for time won’t do you any good." An Hun wasn’t a fool. He admitted that he was indeed intrigued by the miracle surrounding Long Aotian’s survival, but he wasn’t about to let himself be led by the nose.
He glanced at Gu Changqing indifferently. "I won’t kill you today. Once I’m done dealing with my current matters, I’ll head to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall myself to get my answers."
"You think you can just leave? Not that easy!" Gu Changqing shifted his stance, gripping his sword tightly as he blocked An Hun’s path.
But An Hun’s movements were far too fast. Before Gu Changqing could even make a move, An Hun had already flicked his wrist, slamming Gu Changqing’s sword back into its scabbard with a crisp snap!
In the next instant, An Hun disappeared like a violent gust of wind, vanishing swiftly into the dark night.
Gu Changqing watched his retreating figure, his grip on his sword tightening silently.
Meanwhile, Gu Chengfeng had ultimately agreed to split up with Gu Jiao. After all, An Hun’s target was the Emperor. As long as he took the Emperor with him, An Hun would inevitably chase after him.
That wretched girl was safer moving alone.
That was his plan, yet he had no idea that not long after he left, Gu Jiao took out a bone whistle and blew it sharply.
Gu Chengfeng’s body stiffened.
Damn it! He had forgotten she had that whistle!
This was bad—really bad!
An Hun would definitely hear the sound and go after her instead!
Gu Chengfeng turned around, ready to rush back and save Gu Jiao.
Wait. I can’t do that.
If I bring the Emperor back with me and An Hun manages to capture him, then nothing will be holding him back anymore. He’ll kill us both on the spot.
Run!
I have to get as far away as possible!
If An Hun realizes the Emperor isn’t with her, maybe he won’t waste time on her.
Gu Chengfeng clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles cracked. Gritting his teeth, he carried the Emperor on his back and sprinted forward.
Hearing the sharp whistle, An Hun did indeed change direction and began pursuing Gu Jiao instead.
His mastery of qinggong was impeccable as he moved across the steep rooftops as if walking on flat ground.
In no time, he spotted the small figure darting through the alleys below. His lips curled into a cold smirk as he leaped forward, landing precisely in front of Gu Jiao.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
