Gu Jiao came to an abrupt stop.

She turned around and immediately took off in the opposite direction.

An Hun vaulted over her with ease, blocking her path once again.

Gu Jiao’s expression darkened. Not knowing qinggong was truly such a hassle!

An Hun asked, "Where are they hiding?"

Gu Jiao replied, "If you have the ability, find them yourself."

An Hun stepped toward her, his movements slow yet brimming with killing intent. "Brat, killing you would take nothing more than a flick of my fingers. Be smart about this, and I’ll make it quick."

Gu Jiao chuckled, "If you kill me, my people will kill the Emperor too."

An Hun’s footsteps faltered slightly.

In that moment of crisis, Gu Jiao’s acting skills reached an unprecedented level. She put on an award-worthy performance, delivering her words with a soul-stirring intensity. "I took the Emperor to protect my own life. But if my life is no longer safe, then his life means nothing to me either. If you don’t believe me, go ahead—kill me. I guarantee you, the Emperor will die with me!"

An Hun fixed her with a deep stare, as if trying to determine whether she was bluffing or not.

After a moment, he suddenly burst into laughter. "Brat, you wouldn’t dare. I’ll say this one last time, hand him over, or I’ll kill you."

Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow. "And if I hand him over, you won’t kill me?"

An Hun replied flatly, "I’ll still kill you."

Gu Jiao crossed her arms. "Then tell me, why should I give him to you?"

As she spoke, she deliberately let her gaze drift toward an abandoned horse stable behind her, as if unintentionally revealing a hiding spot.

"In there?" An Hun sneered, striking out with his palm and blowing off the stable’s roof, only to find it completely empty inside.

An Hun’s expression turned ice-cold. "Brat, you’re toying with me!"

"Wait!" Gu Jiao raised her hand and calmly made a halting gesture toward him. "Handing over the Emperor of Great Yan is not impossible, but I have one condition. Let me see the face beneath your mask. No one in the six states has ever seen the faces of An Hun and Shi Tian; I want to see yours. Since I’m already a dying person, just consider it as granting me this one small wish."

Gu Jiao was stalling for time.

The Black Wind King was on his way.

As long as the Black Wind King arrived, her chances of escape would increase by half.

An Hun scoffed in disdain. "Brat, you’re in no position to negotiate terms with me! My patience is truly running out. If you don’t speak, I’ll kill you first, then go find the Emperor myself! I refuse to believe your accomplice can get very far while carrying him!"

Gu Jiao suddenly pointed behind him. "Ah! Shi Tian!"

An Hun didn’t truly believe that Shi Tian would appear, but that name held too much weight for him. His instincts took over before he could stop himself, and he reflexively turned his head to look.

The moment he realized he had been tricked again, Gu Jiao had already flung an entire pouch of black gunpowder balls at him with a series of sharp whooshes.

Boom!

The explosions forced him backward by more than ten steps.

Seizing the opportunity, Gu Jiao darted out of the alleyway.

"Big Boss!"

A glimmer of hope flashed in Gu Jiao’s eyes when she saw the Black Wind King sprinting toward her at full speed. In that instant, she even forgot about the pain in her injured foot.

An Hun was utterly enraged now. He gave chase and struck the wall beside him with a single palm!

The old, dilapidated structure collapsed with a thunderous crash, sending a mass of debris tumbling down right on top of Gu Jiao!

"This time, there’s no one left to save you!"

Just as An Hun finished speaking, a figure clad in dark robes streaked through the night like a shadow. Then, a powerful, lean arm swept around Gu Jiao’s waist, and in the blink of an eye, they had shot out from beneath the falling rubble!

He was so fast that Gu Jiao was buffeted by the rushing wind, her face stung by the force.

When he finally landed steadily on the ground, Gu Jiao found herself hanging upside down. She stared at the long shadow cast on the ground by the moonlight and expressionlessly spat out a mouthful of dust from the collapsed wall.

"Long time no see… Long Yi."

Long Yi carefully adjusted Gu Jiao's position, placing her down as if she were his own little doll. Not only that, but he even used his internal force to smooth out a tuft of stray hair that had stubbornly stuck up on her head.

"Long Yi, why are you here?" Gu Jiao asked him.

It was obvious that Long Yi wouldn’t answer her.

Forget it. This question could be studied later. The more pressing issue at hand was dealing with the troublesome An Hun.

Gu Jiao pointed toward An Hun, who stood not far away, and spoke seriously, "Long Yi, beat him up!"

I can't beat you, so I'll have Long Yi beat you up instead!

An Hun clearly hadn’t expected such a drastic shift in Gu Jiao’s demeanor, but after thinking about it, it made sense; this brat had always been shameless. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have repeatedly played tricks on him. However—who was this massive figure that had suddenly appeared?

Long Yi was dressed in dark robes and wore a ghostly mask. Apart from Gu Jiao, Princess Xinyang, and Xiao Heng, no one had seen what he looked like as an adult.

Yet, the aura emanating from him gave An Hun a faint sense of familiarity.

An Hun narrowed his eyes slightly.

Why?

Was it because the other man was also a death warrior?

Long Yi didn’t move.

Instead, he tilted his head, looking at Gu Jiao in confusion. Then, he stretched out a hand and pinched her cheeks.

Gu Jiao’s mouth was forced open from his grip, and she mumbled unclearly, "Wha’ are you doin’?"

Long Yi stared at her blankly and leaned in, peering down her throat.

Gu Jiao immediately understood. Ever since she came to the State of Yan, she had deliberately used a boyish voice to avoid exposing her true identity.

Long Yi had never heard this voice before.

He thought something was wrong with her throat.

Long Yi examined her left and right, while Gu Jiao’s cheeks started going numb. She tried to close her little mouth, but it wouldn’t shut properly. "I’m fine, you go hit him first!"

Can we at least show some basic respect to the opponent?

That man over there wasn't some small fry—he was An Hun, the number one death warrior across the six states!

The sheer killing intent radiating from him was overwhelming, yet why did Long Yi seem completely unbothered, as if he hadn’t even registered the threat?

An Hun turned his gaze toward Long Yi and asked indifferently, "Who are you?"

Gu Jiao pried Long Yi’s hand away. Long Yi then turned around, his cold eyes locking onto An Hun.

From behind Long Yi, Gu Jiao poked out her little head and declared arrogantly, "Your grandpa!"

An Hun: "..."

An Hun wasn’t about to argue with a child. His eyes returned to Long Yi’s face and said, "Your presence feels familiar to me. I have a feeling I’ve seen you somewhere before. But since you refuse to speak, I’ll just find out for myself!"

With those words, he suddenly activated his internal force, raised his palm, and charged straight at Long Yi.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
