Seeing the oncoming attack, Liao Chen’s eyes flickered.

He slammed a palm against the city wall, supporting himself in an inverted stance to evade the blow.

In the next instant, four or five even stronger sword qi came crashing down toward him in unison!

This was a blatant surprise attack!

Liao Chen’s expression instantly changed.

There was no way to dodge it...

The fierce sword qi blasted him off the city tower.

His entire body went numb for a moment, rendering his internal force and qinggong unusable.

Was he about to fall to his death?

He stared up at the gray-blue sky, unaware of when the white clouds had suddenly appeared. In that fleeting moment, he saw his father’s gentle and kind smile.

He hadn’t even avenged his father yet, and now he was going to… die so pointlessly?

At the critical instant, a figure clad in a deep blue Taoist robe soared up from behind, wrapping his arms firmly around Liao Chen’s armored waist and gently lowering him to the ground.

Liao Chen toes touched down, his whole body sinking slightly with the impact. Then he turned his head sharply to look at the man who had appeared out of nowhere beside him, his eyes wide with shock, “Pompous guy?”

Taoist Qingfeng paid no attention, only tilting his head back and fixing his cold, clear eyes on the five swordsmen atop the city tower. Calmly, he said, “His life belongs to me.”

The swordsmen from the Sword Lodge all furrowed their brows simultaneously.

That one guy was already difficult enough to handle, now here came another one?

Yue Liuyi’s almond-shaped eyes widened, and she snapped, “This stinky Taoist looks strong too. Capture him for me! I want both of them! I’m going to use them as test subjects for my medicine!”

The five Sword Lodge experts leapt down from the city tower in unison!

Taoist Qingfeng glanced at Liao Chen’s pale face and said, “You’re injured.”

Liao Chen wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and replied, “It’s nothing serious. Why are you here?”

Taoist Qingfeng answered, “That’s a question I should be asking you, but before you answer, I have another question.”

Considering the goodwill behind this man’s intervention, Liao Chen unusually chose not to argue back and said, “Go ahead.”

Taoist Qingfeng held a small bag of dried steamed buns in his hand and asked seriously, “Is this Cangxue Pass?”

Liao Chen was speechless.

Cangxue Pass was located in the northeast, but this place… was in the northwest.

Liao Chen’s expression was difficult to describe with just a few words.

Had this guy gotten lost again?

He seriously wanted to ask how exactly did he manage to get lost while traveling from the northeast all the way to the northwest?

Suppressing the urge to twitch the corner of his mouth wildly, Liao Chen spoke with surprising calmness, “This isn’t Cangxue Pass... By the way, didn’t your Feng Family swap tasks with Wang Xu and escort the Eldest Imperial Grandson to negotiate peace with the State of Chen?”

Taoist Qingfeng replied, “Feng Wuxiu wanted to eat lamb meat buns, so I went to buy some for him. I told him not to run off and to stick close to His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson... but I guess he and His Highness ended up getting lost together.”

Liao Chen looked at the three buns in the bamboo leaf bag, dried hard as stones, and finally couldn’t hold back any longer as he twitched his mouth sharply.

The one who actually got lost should be you, right?

How long have you even been lost now?

You wouldn’t even think to ask for directions?

Then again, this guy never asked for directions. He simply didn’t believe he was lost.

“As long as I don’t ask, I haven’t gone astray.”

Being directionally challenged wasn’t scary, but being utterly lost and yet still thinking you were the king of the road, now that was truly frightening.

Liao Chen clicked his tongue and shook his head with a sigh. “Who else is there like you... Do you even live on the same plane as us mortals?”

Taoist Qingfeng didn’t catch what he said and gave him a strange look. “What did you say?”

Liao Chen’s peach blossom eyes narrowed slightly, the rare killing intent fading from his body, replaced by a faintly mischievous and eerie smile befitting a demonic monk. “I said you’re a born immortal, must be hard for you to descend to the mortal world.”

Taoist Qingfeng didn’t quite understand, but he didn’t bother figuring it out. He glanced at the empty space opposite them and asked, “Why are these people trying to kill you? Also, why are you dressed like that?”

Liao Chen gave a light hum and answered calmly, “The two nations are at war. I came here to fight. They’re the Jin army.”

“The Jin army?” Taoist Qingfeng paused, then said seriously, “Alright, I’ll kill them first. Then I’ll personally take your life.”

Liao Chen smiled faintly. “Sounds good.”

Though they appeared to have exchanged a fair amount of words, not much time had actually passed. Meanwhile, the five swordsmen from the Sword Cottage had been silently observing their aura and internal force to gauge their martial skill and weaknesses.

Unfortunately for them, their efforts yielded nothing.

“Attack together!” The lead swordsman ordered.

The five, each wielding a long sword, charged fiercely at Taoist Qingfeng and Liao Chen.

Taoist Qingfeng placed the dried buns on a nearby stone lion statue. Unaccustomed to weapons, he fought with his bare hands against several opponents.

Liao Chen likewise refrained from drawing any weapon.

The swordsmen had assumed that since Liao Chen had lost his weapon and seemed internally injured, his strength would be severely diminished. Yet to their surprise, as soon as Liao Chen moved, several of them immediately felt immense pressure.

Liao Chen said coldly, “What you did just now was a sneak attack. Do you really think you can beat me head-on?”

With that, he slammed a palm down, sending two swordsmen flying with a heavy impact.

Taoist Qingfeng frowned. “So his martial arts are actually this formidable?”

The other three, seeing Liao Chen was hard to deal with, shifted their attention to Taoist Qingfeng, thinking he would be easier prey.

Taoist Qingfeng leapt into the air, soaring above them, then suddenly slammed a palm onto the ground, “Li! Kan! Po!”

A domineering internal force burst out from his center, rushing like a tidal wave toward the swordsmen on either side.

“Li” represents East, and “Kan” West. Unknowingly, the two swordsmen had stepped right into his formation, almost exactly like what had happened with Fifth Master Han and Gu Changqing.

The difference this time was that the Black Wind Cavalry’s commander selection was merely a competition, and Taoist Qingfeng hadn’t gone all out before.

But now, he was revealing his true power.

The two swordsmen were slammed against the nearby pillars with such force that the pillars crumbled, and both fell heavily to the ground, their weapons flying aside.

Taoist priests didn’t kill lightly.

But he was first a citizen of the Great Yan, and then a Taoist priest of Baiyun Temple!

When the nation rose or fell, every commoner shared responsibility!

“Combine! Separate! Break!”

Taoist Qingfeng struck the ground with another palm. Liao Chen’s expression changed sharply as he leapt up, landing gracefully atop the roof.

Those two weren’t as lucky; they were struck once again by Taoist Qingfeng’s devastating move, their dantian utterly destroyed, and they died on the spot without any chance of recovery.

Liao Chen lightly sprang forward, landing steadily opposite him, a faint, enigmatic smile playing at the corners of his lips as he remarked, “Pompous guy, your strength is quite surprisingly impressive.”

Taoist Qingfeng’s face remained expressionless as he replied coldly, “When I kill you, it will be an even greater surprise.”

Without another word, he swung a palm forcefully in Liao Chen’s direction!

Liao Chen’s eyes flickered sharply as he raised his fist and struck back toward Taoist Qingfeng with equal force!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
