That’s right. Today was the day of Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng’s grand wedding.
“Mm, I never had a grand wedding before. It feels rather novel.” At once, her drowsiness vanished, and her eyes shone brightly with excitement.
Yu Ya’er and Yao shi, hearing these words, only thought she meant that back when she had lived among common folk, she never had the chance to hold a proper wedding.
The two of them felt an aching tenderness in their hearts.
“Young miss, your hardships are over now. From today on, you’ll never have to suffer again.” Yu Ya’er sincerely comforted her.
Yao shi’s heart felt sour, and the tip of her nose stung with the urge to cry. The moment she heard Gu Jiao utter the words “grand wedding,” tears had already begun to well in her eyes.
She did not know whether it was because she felt sorrow for the ordeals her daughter had endured, or because she was reluctant to see her daughter married off.
She had not raised her long enough, truly not enough.
This daughter, whom she had only reunited with after fourteen years of separation, was now marrying away in less than four years——
“Madame, please don’t cry.” Yu Ya’er persuaded her, though her own voice soon choked, “If you cry, I will also cry.”
How strange. She truly did not feel sad, but seeing Yao shi’s tears made her feel sad too.
Gu Jiao stood there staring blankly at Yao shi, not quite understanding why she would cry.
The Matron of Honor, who had seen many such scenes, smiled lightly at Yao shi and said, “Madame, the young miss is only marrying into the capital, not to some faraway place. If you wish to see her, is it not easy?”
“You’re right.” Yao shi wiped her tears, feeling a little embarrassed for losing her composure in front of her daughter. Thankfully, it did not affect her daughter’s mood.
Yao shi patted the back of Gu Jiao’s hand and said, “I’ve had hot water prepared. Come, go bathe and change.”
“I still have to bathe?” Gu Jiao made a small sound of surprise, then got out of bed and went into the washing chamber.
The bathing tub was newly made, releasing the natural fragrance of fresh wood. It was filled with steaming warm water, on the surface of which petals floated and swayed gently.
The whole room was filled with a delicate, soothing fragrance.
Yu Ya’er attended to Gu Jiao’s bath.
At home, Gu Jiao was not used to having anyone serve her so closely. This was the first time Yu Ya’er had ever seen her young lady’s body at such close quarters.
She had not known before, but now that she saw it, tears welled up in her eyes immediately.
Her young miss’s body… bore far too many scars.
Though they had all healed, and most had faded to shallow, barely visible marks, knowing how each of those scars had been earned filled her heart with indescribable pain.
The eldest young miss always said she was fine, always said all was well.
But in truth, she only shared her joys and concealed her hardships.
“Why are you crying?” Gu Jiao heard Yu Ya’er’s soft sobs behind her and turned her head. “Are you upset? Do you miss your parents?”
Yu Ya’er choked and shook her head. “No, this servant does not miss her parents.”
“Oh? Then why?” Gu Jiao asked.
“Young miss… does it hurt?” Yu Ya’er’s fingertip gently touched a faint scar on her right shoulder.
Gu Jiao shook her head. “It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
Yu Ya’er held back her tears and asked no further.
For some reason, her thoughts suddenly turned to Gu Jinyu.
What right did Gu Jinyu have to compare herself with the eldest young miss? Had she ever risked her life for the country, or taken blows on behalf of the people? She had accomplished hardly any worthy deeds, yet had caused no small amount of trouble!
“You’re unhappy.” Gu Jiao sensed Yu Ya’er’s mood.
Yu Ya’er replied, “It’s not because of you, young miss. I just thought of someone who is always comparing herself to you… Forget it, I won’t speak of her. Today is your wedding day. Yu Ya’er must only think of happy things!”
Gu Jiao nodded. “Mm.”
After the bath, Yu Ya’er dressed Gu Jiao in her bridal gown.
For today’s wedding, every layer of clothing, inside and out, was red.
The gown was the very one Little Jing Kong had bought for her by selling his golden abacus. Back then it was a little too large, but now it fit perfectly.
Ever since arriving in this ancient time, for the sake of work and battles, her attire had always been plain and practical. She had never once worn such bright colors.
When she emerged from behind the folding screen, everyone in the room felt a sudden brilliance before their eyes.
The Matron of Honor had escorted countless brides before, but to speak truthfully, in figure and features, few could compare to the young woman before her. It was only a pity that on the left side of her face was a red birthmark. What a shame it was.
Yao shi looked at her daughter, radiant as peach blossoms. This was only with the bridal gown on, without even the red veil yet, and already, she almost couldn’t hold herself together.
She turned around, took a deep breath to steady her emotions, then smiled at her daughter. “JiaoJiao, come sit here and let Madame Cen do your hair.”
The Matron of Honor’s surname was Cen.
Gu Jiao came over and sat down before the dressing table.
She was stunned at her own reflection.
Dressed like this… not bad at all.
Madame Cen was amused by Gu Jiao’s expression, thinking this girl was truly unlike the others. She was without the slightest bit of shy coyness, but straightforward and candid like a child.
Madame Cen came forward, opened the little cosmetic case she had brought, and said gently to Gu Jiao, “I’ll call you JiaoJiao, just like your mother does.”
“Alright.” Gu Jiao replied.
Smiling, Madame Cen said, “Before I style your hair, let me thread your face.”
“What’s threading the face(*jiǎomiàn)?” Gu Jiao asked. She had only ever heard of “bandit suppression.(*jiǎofěi)”
“It’s this. The first time might feel a little strange.” Madame Cen’s voice was soft and soothing, making one instinctively feel at ease.
She pulled out a long white thread, twined it around her left hand, wound it a few times around her right, and stretched it open into a loop before she began working it back and forth across Gu Jiao’s face.
Gu Jiao flinched from the sting!
The little tuft of hair on top of her head practically stood on end!
So after all that, it was just pulling out facial hair…
Yao shi, who had been so grief-stricken moments ago, saw Gu Jiao’s dazed and blank expression and couldn’t help bursting into laughter through her tears.
Gu Jiao sat soullessly still as Madame Cen’s thread went back and forth across her little face.
The young commander of the Black Wind Cavalry, who never blinked at killing an enemy, was now being pinned to a chair to have her facial hairs plucked.
Who would believe it if told?
Because she was fond of Gu Jiao, Madame Cen even threaded her a couple of extra rounds.
Just as the threading was done, Grannie Fang came in from the kitchen carrying a steaming food container.
“Madame, eldest young miss.” She smiled and gave a polite bow.
“So soon? You just left.” Yao shi said in surprise.
Grannie Fang smiled. “Duke An had already instructed the servants to prepare everything beforehand.” She paused, then lowered her voice to Yao shi. “The servants said Duke An didn’t sleep a wink last night.”
Yao shi sighed softly. “He truly dotes on JiaoJiao.”
Grannie Fang replied, “eldest young miss deserves it.”
References 1. — This is a word play. “绞 (jiǎo)” in “绞面(jiǎomiàn)” [face-threading] sounds the same as “剿 (jiǎo)” in “剿匪(jiǎofěi)” [bandit suppresion]. Face-threading is a customary wedding ritual about removing fine facial hair for good luck and to ensure a smooth transition into adulthood. Raz P.'s ThoughtsTo read advance GSPW chapters! Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
