Grannie Fang had once worried that the eldest young miss’s heart was too cold for the Madame to warm, but later realized that though her temperament was cold, her feelings were the truest and purest. When she treated someone well, it was wholehearted, with no thought of cost.
“Mom, mom.”
Gu Xiaobao had woken up and was brought in by Yuanyang.
At first, he had been looking for his mother, but then he caught sight of Gu Jiao in the bronze mirror.
His round, black eyes widened, staring for quite some time in disbelief.
Wriggling down from Yuanyang’s arms, he toddled around to stand before Gu Jiao, lifting his little head to examine her carefully from top to bottom.
“Oh?” He spread out his tiny hands and shook them. “Gone.”
Gu Jiao’s lips curved slightly. “Big sister hasn’t gone anywhere.”
The familiar voice startled him. He looked at Gu Jiao again.
Gu Jiao smiled warmly. “Call me big sister.”
Gu Xiaobao refused.
His unsteady little steps brought him over to Yao shi. Tugging on her hand, he pulled her toward Gu Jiao, all the while pointing at Gu Jiao’s wedding dress with his other hand, shaking and saying, “Don’t wear, don’t wear.”
Yao shi gave a bittersweet smile. “Big sister is getting married. She has to wear it.”
Gu Xiaobao paused in confusion.
He was too young to understand what marriage truly meant, but deep inside, he seemed to sense that it would mean a kind of parting.
“Don’t wear.” He shook his little hand very seriously, then pointed at Grannie Fang. “Grannie, wear.”
The person little Gu Xiaobao disliked most was none other than Grannie Fang, who trailed after him all day, forbidding him from touching this or playing with that.
He wanted this grannie gone quickly.
But his sister must not go.
The whole room of people didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at his antics.
Gu Xiaobao was not the sort of child to throw tantrums. When his opposition came to nothing, he didn’t cry or make a fuss; instead, he simply stood by his sister’s side, clutching tightly at the hem of her gown.
As if, by holding on tightly enough, his sister would not be able to leave.
After finishing the threading, Madame Cen began to style Gu Jiao’s hair and apply makeup.
Gu Jiao had been home from the border for over a month, and her complexion had long since turned fair again, with her cheeks tender, delicate, and radiant.
Coupled with her jet-black, glossy hair that shone like satin, even Madame Cen found herself staring in awe.
Never before had she seen skin so flawless, nor hair so soft and lustrous.
She gently gathered Gu Jiao’s long tresses into her palms, lifted a new comb, and began to comb them smoothly with a tender hand.
“One stroke to the end, two strokes to grow old together, three strokes to bless with children and grandchildren, four strokes to meet good fortune…”
……
At the Marquis Ding’an Estate.
Gu Jinyu had also risen early to prepare for her wedding.
She changed into a bright red bridal gown and sat before the bronze mirror, where Madame Cen’s colleague, Madame Sun, helped thread her face and style her hair.
Originally, she had wanted to invite Madame Cen herself, but unfortunately Madame Cen had been called away.
Old Madame Gu’s attendant, Grannie Zhang, had arrived before dawn, busily handling matters in the room, duties that should have belonged to her mother.
But her mother had gone to attend the wedding of her good elder sister.
They say it was about being fair to both sides, but in the end, wasn’t she still showing more favoritism to her own flesh and blood?
Outside the quiet estate drifted waves of lively laughter. It wasn’t the first round of commotion. Earlier, there had already been several bursts of noise.
“Who’s making such a racket? Grandfather and Grandmother are still resting.” With a frown, Gu Jinyu asked Chunliu, who stood at her side, while Madame Sun worked on her makeup.
“It’s not from our estate.” Chunliu muttered discontentedly. “It’s from the Duke’s Estate.”
Gu Jinyu bit her lip. “Why is it so noisy over there?”
“Exactly! What’s so great about getting married? And it’s her second time, yet they make such a fuss, as if no one knows she’s been married before!”
Madame Sun remained silent as she continued applying makeup.
Matters concerning these two young ladies had already spread throughout the capital.
The true daughter was lost among the common folk, and whether in poverty or in wealth, she ended up marrying the same man twice. How could that possibly be shameful? That was fortune! That was fate!
And as for why that household was so lively. Well, because that eldest young miss had status!
When she awoke, the entire household awoke with her.
Unlike this second young miss here, who still had to look upon Old Madame Gu and Old Marquis’s expressions before acting.
“Where’s Father?” Gu Jinyu asked.
Grandfather would certainly not come to see her; Grandmother, frail in health, most likely could not come either.
Only her father remained.
If even her father did not appear at her wedding, her husband’s family would surely laugh at her.
“I wonder if Lord Marquis’s injuries have healed…” Chunliu said softly.
Ever since he had been “honored” with a good beating from both his own father and Xuanyuan Qi, Marquis Gu had been bedridden for a full month. When Chunliu went to pay respects yesterday, he had still needed assistance to walk.
“Go and see.” Gu Jinyu said.
“Yes!”
Chunliu hurried away.
Just as she reached the entrance of Marquis Gu’s courtyard, she caught sight of Old Marquis himself, hale and vigorous, looking as spirited as ever. Her heart leapt with joy.
From the looks of it, Old Marquis was here to send the young miss off to her marriage!
Excited, she stepped forward to pay her respects. But before she could, Old Marquis had already strode into his son’s courtyard without so much as a glance.
Moments later, Old Marquis emerged, dragging out a limping Marquis Gu by the ear.
Chunliu froze. “Is… is he hauling Lord Marquis over to send off the young miss?”
Chunliu had only guessed half right.
Old Marquis truly was going to send off their young miss, but it was not Gu Jinyu he intended to escort.
……
On the other side, Gu Changqing and Gu Chengfeng had also risen from their own courtyards.
After washing up, both changed into new clothes, looking strikingly handsome. Especially Gu Chengfeng, who secretly applied fragrant pomade to set his hair in place, determined to be the most dazzling man today.
It was still well before dawn.
Gu Chengfeng had no intention of waking Gu Chenglin, but as soon as he opened his door, he came face to face with Gu Chenglin already dressed neatly.
“Huh? Why are you up so early?” He asked suspiciously.
“I… I… I want to go with you.” Gu Chenglin stammered.
Gu Chengfeng grew serious. “Go where? I’m heading to the Duke’s Estate across the way.”
“…Mm, I know.” Gu Chenglin muttered.
With arms crossed, Gu Chengfeng narrowed his eyes. “If you know, why still go? Don’t you dislike dealing with them?”
By them, he meant Yao shi, Gu Jiao, and Gu Yan.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
