Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Jiao tossed the man onto the carriage, clapped the dust off her hands, then leapt up herself to sit beside Xiao Heng.

Having barely exercised her muscles since the war ended, Gu Jiao felt her hands itching for action.

She glanced at the sack on the ground and said with utter seriousness, “I don’t think he’ll confess so easily. We’ll have to resort to torture.”

“I’ll confess!” Came the voice from inside the sack.

Gu Jiao: “???”

I haven’t even said what I’m going to ask yet!

The foot she had just lifted froze awkwardly in midair, and she felt terribly wronged.

Xiao Heng chuckled softly, held her delicate hand, and gently brushed her fingertips with his thumb as he murmured, “I’ll make it up to you later.”

Gu Jiao said, “It has to be the mushy and sticky-sweet kind.”

Xiao Heng let out a low laugh, his eyes glimmering like scattered starlight. “Alright.”

The man inside the sack: Hello? Can we focus on the interrogation? Stop feeding me dog food!

Gu Jiao finally pulled Young Gentleman Ming Yue out of the sack.

Young Gentleman Ming Yue sat down on a stool beside Xiao Heng, fanning himself with a folding fan as he said, “Ask whatever you wish. This young master is in a good mood today, so I won’t hold it against you.”

Gu Jiao turned to Xiao Heng. “If he’s too stubborn, can I hit him?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s whole body stiffened in alarm!

What a perfectly fine young lady, why was she always so eager to hit people!

“Wait a moment, girl, what happened to your face?”

The light inside the carriage was dim, but his eyesight was excellent, and he still managed to see that breathtakingly beautiful face.

He almost could not tear his eyes away.

Heavens, had this girl done some witchcraft? How was it that after merely a month apart, she had turned into such a stunning beauty?

Xiao Heng said, “Alright, now you can hit him.”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue: “…!!”

“I won’t look, I won’t look, alright?”

With a desperate will to survive, he shut his eyes tight.

“No.” Gu Jiao said firmly.

“You, you really…” He had only gotten half a sentence out when he felt something flying toward him. By instinct he raised his hand and caught it. It was, unmistakably, a sword.

The familiar sensation sent a jolt through his chest. He suddenly opened his eyes wide, lowering his gaze to the longsword in his grasp.

To let him see it more clearly, Gu Jiao lit the oil lamp on the small table.

She observed his reaction closely, and though she already had a good guess in her heart, she still asked for confirmation. “Is this the sword you’ve been searching for?”

“Yes, it is.” Young Gentleman Ming Yue did not conceal nor deny it. Stroking the hilt in disbelief, his hand and arm trembled faintly from nervousness and excitement alike.

“So it was in your hands…”

Gu Jiao did not explain that she herself had only obtained it that very day. “What is the origin of this sword? Don’t lie to me, or I fear you won’t walk out of this carriage alive.”

A flash of cold light shot through Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s eyes, and in an instant, murderous aura burst out from his entire being. Yet just as quickly, he gave a muffled groan and clutched his chest.

The killing intent dissipated.

“You’re injured?” Gu Jiao asked.

“No. It’s not an injury.” As for what it was, he had no desire to elaborate. Turning toward the two of them, he said, “If I tell you its origin, will you return it to me? Not for nothing, name your price.”

He had used the word ‘return.’

Xiao Heng replied indifferently, “Tell us first. If your explanation satisfies us, then we will consider whether to agree to your condition.”

Gu Jiao nodded at once. “That’s right, exactly like that!”

A trace of conflict surfaced in Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s eyes. By rights, he should not expose his own identity. But in order to reclaim this sword, he could only betray the oath he had once sworn.

Resigned, he said, “It was my master’s sword.”

Xiao Heng asked, “And who is your master?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue furrowed his brows, clearly very conflicted about what he was about to say next.

“You don’t have to say it if you don’t want to, but the sword cannot be yours.” Xiao Heng said directly as he stretched out his hand, making a move to take the sword back.

Young Gentleman Ming Yue immediately hugged the longsword in his arms tightly. “I’ll talk!”

Gu Jiao glared fiercely and said, “Hurry up and speak, otherwise I’ll beat you up!”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue forced down his temper. He had grown weaker and weaker now, and he was no match for this little girl, so he could only bow his head under another’s roof.

“You’ve heard of the Sword Lodge, right?” He asked.

The young couple nodded together.

When Gu Jiao had gone to the eastern border of the State of Yan to fight against the States of Liang and Jin, she had crossed swords many times with people from the Sword Lodge. But after the war was over and the State of Jin had surrendered, nothing more was heard about the Sword Lodge.

So it was uncertain whether this Sword Lodge was the same Sword Lodge as that one.

Young Gentleman Ming Yue said, “My master is the master of the Sword Lodge, the leader of the sect. This sword is called Black Moon, and it is the token of the sect leader. The reason I came to the State of Zhao was precisely because a traitor emerged in the Sword Lodge and fled with the sword. I came to seek out its whereabouts. Who could have thought that just as I found it, that wretched monk snatched it away.”

Gu Jiao said, “You mean Liao Chen? Liao Chen didn’t snatch your sword. He picked it up.”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue said, “I don’t believe that.”

Gu Jiao sneered, “Believe it or not, that’s your business.”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue fell silent, unable to refute.

There was no point in chasing after what that monk had done. What mattered was that Black Moon had already been found, and he could finally return to the Sword Lodge.

Gu Jiao then asked, “How many Sword Lodge are there under heaven?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue replied without thinking, “There is only one.” Then, recalling something, he added, “But it’s not impossible that some small sects might use the name of the Sword Lodge to swagger and deceive people outside.”

Gu Jiao touched her delicate little chin and asked, “The Sword Lodge that colluded with the imperial family of the State of Jin, was that your Sword Lodge?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue was slightly stunned. “The State of Jin’s imperial family? Ah, you mean that one. Yes, more or less. That was our Sword Lodge’s branch hall. Only two of them were from the inner sect.”

Gu Jiao said, “Shi Tian and An Hun?”

“You know them?” Young Gentleman Ming Yue was surprised.

Gu Jiao thought to herself, not only do I know them, I know them all too well.

I’ve fought against An Hun, and I’ve even snapped pens with Shi Tian!

No wonder Long Yi and An Hun were so formidable, while the Sword Lodge fighters at the border were so weak. As it turned out, only those two were inner sect disciples.

Young Gentleman Ming Yue snorted. “The martial world doesn’t know that the Sword Lodge has inner and outer divisions. It was only by luck that you ran into me, otherwise you would never have known that the Sword Lodge associating with the State of Jin’s imperial family was just a branch hall.”

Gu Jiao asked in puzzlement, “Why did you have dealings with the State of Jin’s imperial family?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s face darkened. “Dealings, what dealings or collusion? I don’t know the specifics, it wasn’t my responsibility. But the two people you just mentioned, in terms of seniority… perhaps I ought to call them senior brothers.”

“Which one is older?” Gu Jiao asked.

Young Gentleman Ming Yue said, “An Hun is the eldest senior brother, Shi Tian is the youngest… and now I’m the youngest. When they went to the branch hall, I was still very young, I never met them. I only heard some things about them from my master.”

Gu Jiao nodded. “Go on.”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue looked at her oddly. “Are you asking about the sword, or about my senior brothers?”

Gu Jiao said, “Both. Why did they go to the branch hall?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue thought for a while. “I think it was to kill someone.”

To kill Xuanyuan Qi, the second Lord of the Shadows.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
