Back then, Long Yi had come to the State of Zhao carrying this very mission.
But for some unknown reason, Long Yi abandoned his mission.
So An Hun took over in his stead, stayed at the branch hall, and together with the imperial family of the State of Jin carried out the secret extermination of Xuanyuan Qi and the Shadow Division.
“Long Yi… I kind of miss him.” Gu Jiao murmured softly.
Xiao Heng held her hand, saying nothing.
He missed Long Yi too.
Missed him very, very much.
No one knew whether he had found the answer he had been searching for by now.
“Are you done asking? Can I take my sword back now?” Young Gentleman Ming Yue asked.
“Not yet.” Xiao Heng took the sword into his own hand.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue flared up. “You people don’t keep your word!”
Xiao Heng spoke unhurriedly, “What I said was that if your answers satisfied us, then we might consider it.”
He ground his teeth. “Then what is it you’re not satisfied with? I haven’t concealed a single thing!”
Xiao Heng’s face remained calm as he said, “We are satisfied, that’s why we’re now considering whether to return the sword to you.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue realized he had been played and was so angry that smoke nearly rose from his head.
“Have you ever seen this?” Xiao Heng produced Gu Jiao’s sketch paper.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue turned his face away. “Humph! Why should I tell you?”
Xiao Heng said, “It seems you don’t want your master’s sword back after all.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue shot him a cold glare, then looked at the tusked mask in the sketch and said, “I’ve never seen it.”
Xiao Heng looked at him seriously. “Are you certain?”
He sighed. “It’s just a mask. If I’ve seen it, I’ve seen it; if I haven’t, then I haven’t. Why would I lie to you about that?”
Xiao Heng stared into his eyes without blinking. “One last question. Where is the Sword Lodge?”
……
Two quarters of an hour later, a gray-clad guard found his master leaning against a wall, gasping for breath, in an alley.
He strode over quickly, held his arm, and said anxiously, “Young master! Are you all right? Why did you come here alone without me?”
“It’s nothing.” Young Gentleman Ming Yue pressed a hand against his chest. “I ran into the Little Marquis of Zhao and that girl from Bishui Alley.”
The gray-clad guard was horrified. “Them? Did they bully you?”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue shook his head. “No, they only asked me some questions, about the origin of the Black Moon sword, about my two senior brothers, and about where the Sword Lodge is.”
The gray-clad guard frowned. “Why are they suddenly asking about that? And… did you tell them everything?”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue looked toward the direction where the carriage had vanished and said lightly, “I told them some things.”
…………
Inside the carriage.
Gu Jiao played with the longsword in her hands and asked Xiao Heng, “What do you think? Did that Ming Yue lie?”
Xiao Heng said, “He didn’t lie, but he didn’t tell the whole truth either. He concealed some things.”
Gu Jiao said, “Oh?”
Xiao Heng said, “It’s not surprising. Every sect has its secrets.”
Gu Jiao pointed to the paper on the table. “Then this map of the Sword Lodge he drew. Is it real or fake?”
Xiao Heng’s expression grew solemn. “It should be real. And as for him saying he hadn’t seen that mask, he didn’t look like he was lying.”
They still did not know who the swordsman in Gu Jiao’s dream, the one who killed her, really was.
Xiao Heng brushed aside the hair at her temples and said gently, “Don’t worry. If he’s still alive, we will definitely find him.”
They were no longer a pair standing alone and helpless. Behind them stood the imperial families of two nations, the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, the Marquis Xuanping Estate, and the mighty Black Wind Cavalry and Shadow Division.
Gu Jiao shook her head. “I’m not worried.”
Xiao Heng held her hand and smiled. “That’s how it should be. After so much effort, we’re finally married. Don’t trouble yourself with anything else, just wait peacefully to become the wife of the Junior Secretary.”
Gu Jiao blinked. “The wife of the Junior Secretary?”
The corners of Xiao Heng’s lips curved. “I forgot to tell you. Last year, Grand Secretary Yuan proposed to His Majesty that there be an examination for the Junior Secretary position. His Majesty agreed, but for certain reasons it was postponed for a year. The exam will be held next month.”
Gu Jiao gave a little sound of surprise. “So you don’t plan to be the crown prince of Great Yan?”
Xiao Heng smiled. “The title of crown prince was given to me by my parents. But the position of Junior Secretary is an office I can earn by my own efforts.”
Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow. “You say that as if you’ve already passed. What if you don’t?”
Xiao Heng looked at her with warmth. “Then I’ll accept whatever punishment Madame gives. But if I do pass, then you’ll have to reward me.”
It was clear from his tone that it wouldn’t be any proper reward.
Gu Jiao said seriously, “You haven’t even finished settling today’s account, and you’re already thinking about the future.”
Xiao Heng held her soft hand, leaned close to her ear, and with a low, magnetic voice said, “What Madame means is that we ought to go back earlier and properly settle today’s account.”
Gu Jiao said, “I didn’t say that.”
Xiao Heng replied, “You did.”
Gu Jiao: “…”
……
When the two of them returned to the Princess Mansion, they first went to Princess Xinyang’s quarters to pay their respects to her and Marquis Xuanping, and also played with Little Yiyi for a while.
Little Yiyi was growing stronger and stronger, lying in the cradle and kicking her legs about with great energy.
Princess Xinyang asked them about their return visit, whether they had gone to visit Yao shi.
“We did.” Xiao Heng said.
That morning they had gone to the Duke Estate, in the afternoon to Bishui Alley, and at dusk they had captured Young Gentleman Ming Yue.
“Father, I have something to speak with you about.” Xiao Heng said to Marquis Xuanping. “It concerns the Sword Lodge.”
Back at the border during the war, the one who had dealt with the Sword Lodge the most was actually Marquis Xuanping, and in the end, the several elders of the Sword Lodge had all perished at Marquis Xuanping’s hands.
“Come to the study.” Marquis Xuanping said, clasping his hands behind his back as he strode away in long steps.
Princess Xinyang glared at him and muttered, “That’s my study!”
Father and son went together to the study next door.
Yu Jin brought over a bowl of pitch-black medicine and cast Gu Jiao a meaningful glance.
Gu Jiao was unsettled by the look. “What is it?”
Princess Xinyang said, “Drink it.”
Gu Jiao sniffed at it. She was a physician so of course it wasn’t hard for her to recognize the herbs. “This is…”
Princess Xinyang openly admitted, “A fertility tonic. Drink it while it’s hot. Once it cools, its effectiveness won’t be enough.”
Gu Jiao: “…”
Should I tell you… we already used little dudu?
Princess Xinyang gave her a sidelong glance and asked, “Why haven’t you drunk it yet? Afraid it’s bitter?”
Fine, just drink it. After all, there’s no baby.
Gu Jiao tilted back her head and downed the fertility tonic in one go.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
