Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Much as he disliked the boy, even Marquis Gu had to admit that the Little Marquis of Zhao’s scholarly achievements were genuine.
Well, being the father-in-law of the Little Marquis wasn’t so bad after all.
With that thought flashing through his mind, he cleared his throat and said in the tone of a dignified elder, “You’re here, yet you don’t even think to greet your father-in-law?”
Xiao Heng brushed the wide sleeve of his robe, replying calmly and unhurriedly, “The one I married is the daughter of Duke An of Great Yan. Duke An is my father-in-law.”
Marquis Gu’s face went stiff, his mouth twitching as he stormed angrily inside.
That wretched girl! What kind of husband did she bring home? Doesn’t he know the slightest bit of respect?
Just wait. When he saw that girl, he was definitely going to teach her a good lesson!
With long, angry strides, he stepped across the threshold, only to trip over his own foot and fall flat on his face with a loud “Ah!”
Gu Jiao, who had just come out from the east room, blinked in confusion at the sight. After a moment, she raised an eyebrow and said, “Oh, you may rise.”
Marquis Gu: “???”
……
Marquis Gu, with his face bruised and nose swollen, went to complain to Yao shi. Yet just as he stepped into the room, before he could even open his mouth, his eyes landed on the pair of twins lying side by side on the bed.
He froze on the spot.
Twins were already rare, and dragon-and-phoenix twins, one boy and one girl, were even rarer. The last time he had seen such tiny twins was when Gu Yan and Gu Jinyu were little.
He still remembered how they had looked, lying in their swaddles. The difference was, Gu Yan had been born with a heart condition and refused to share space with Gu Jinyu, crying incessantly. So the scene hadn’t exactly been a pleasant one.
But now, looking at the two little ones before him, though they each lay in their own swaddle, he could clearly feel that blood-deep bond between them.
A thought suddenly crossed Marquis Gu’s mind: So this is what true dragon-and-phoenix twins are like.
“Lord Marquis.” Yao shi was in a good mood today, and for once, she gave Marquis Gu a pleasant look.
Marquis Gu walked closer, staring blankly at the two children. “They are…”
Yao shi, ignoring the bruises all over his face, said fondly, her expression soft with affection, “Ah Heng and JiaoJiao’s dragon-and-phoenix twins. Cong’er and Yan’er.”
Marquis Gu opened his mouth.
That girl actually gave birth to them…
Yao shi smiled. “Aren’t they adorable?”
Marquis Gu wanted to argue, but he couldn’t find a single thing to refute.
The two little ones really were… quite adorable.
He couldn’t help but think of Gu Jinyu, who had married into the Marquis Changping Estate far away. Gu Jinyu had wed on the same day as that girl. Now that Gu Jiao already had dragon-and-phoenix twins, perhaps Jinyu was also expecting by now?
……
Feng City was the easternmost city in the State of Zhao. The Marquis Changping Estate was located on its most prosperous street, surrounded by local gentry and powerful families.
Yet despite the prime location of the estate, the courtyard assigned to Gu Jinyu was far from satisfactory.
The Luoshui Courtyard, a hastily tidied-up residence.
Gu Jinyu had been married into the Marquis Changping Estate for more than half a year, but she was still untouched.
At first, she had been too embarrassed to speak of it. Later, when Madame Changping urged her to bear a legitimate heir for Third Master Quan as soon as possible, she confessed the truth to her mother-in-law.
Her mother-in-law then intervened in their marital relationship, and it did have an effect. After that, Third Young Master Quan began visiting her rooms on the first and fifteenth of each month.
Yet even when they shared the same bed, he never laid a hand on her.
For a time, she thought perhaps she wasn’t attractive enough to please him, or that she had somehow done something to offend him.
Until one day, she decided to cook something with her own hands. She spent the entire afternoon carefully making a bowl of lotus seed porridge to send to him.
But the moment she approached the study, she heard… shameful sounds coming from inside.
She thought it was some servant girl seducing Third Young Master Quan in broad daylight. Anger clouded her head; she pushed the door open, only to see a sight that she would never forget for the rest of her life.
Third Young Master Quan was leaning over his desk… and the one with him was a man.
It was as if lightning had struck her from a clear sky. Her mind went completely blank.
Enraged and humiliated, Third Young Master Quan drove her out. She, furious and heartbroken, quarreled with him, saying things that were harsh and unpleasant. The argument had ended terribly.
After that, she moved out of Third Young Master Quan’s courtyard, taking Chunliu and a few of her servant girls to live in this remote Luoshui Courtyard.
So this was the so-called wonderful marriage for which she had been willing to cut ties with Yao shi.
This was the Marquis’s legitimate son she had been so determined to marry.
How laughably ironic.
Old Madame Gu had surely known about this, hadn’t she? She had deliberately sent her into the fire pit, caring only about currying favor with the Marquis Changping Estate and not about whether Jinyu lived or died!
Her dear grandmother, how considerate she had been toward her granddaughter indeed.
But all of that was nothing more than Old Madame Gu’s own delusional thinking. The Marquis Ding’an Estate commanded a hundred thousand Gu Family soldiers, why on earth would they need to curry favor with the Quan Family?
A shortsighted old woman of the inner household; that was all it took to sell her off like this!
“Young miss.”
Chunliu came to the window carrying a bowl of freshly cooked porridge. She carefully handed it to Gu Jinyu. “It’s going cold soon, please drink it while it’s still warm.”
Gu Jinyu sat by the window, the cold wind blowing against her face. “I don’t have an appetite.”
“Young miss, you haven’t eaten for days.” Chunliu said softly, her voice full of worry.
But Gu Jinyu still had no desire to eat.
Ever since Gu Jinyu had come to live here, she had severed all contact with the capital. Yet for some reason today, as if driven by some unseen force, she suddenly asked, “Is there any news from the capital?”
Chunliu pressed her lips together and lowered her head.
Gu Jinyu cast her a glance and said coolly, “Just say it.”
Chunliu bit her lip and spoke softly, “It’s said that the Eldest Young Miss has given birth to a pair of dragon-and-phoenix twins for the Little Marquis.”
“Married less than a year, and already extending the Xiao Family line… dragon-and-phoenix twins… hahaha… haha…” Gu Jinyu clutched at her chest, as though a knife were twisting inside it. A self-mocking smile curved her lips as tears welled in her eyes. “Good. Very good. Truly wonderful!”
……
The Capital.
Gu Changqing and Yuan Baolin’s wedding had originally been set for the twelfth lunar month, but because Grand Secretary Yuan had suddenly fallen ill, the date was postponed again and again. By the third month, Grand Secretary Yuan’s health had improved, and in the fourth lunar month, the long-awaited wedding finally arrived.
To attend Gu Changqing’s wedding, Gu Jiao postponed her trip to Hidden Night Island for a time.
Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen had already led the Black Wind Cavalry and the Shadow Division back to the State of Yan.
Liao Chen remained the third-generation leader of the Shadow Division, and Gu Jiao was still the young commander of the Black Wind Cavalry. Even though she was not physically in the State of Yan, tales of her deeds were spoken everywhere across the land.
As for the military training, it was temporarily under the command of Supreme Commander Xuanyuan Qi.
On the twelfth day of the fourth lunar month, at the hour of chenshi(7-9 am), Gu Changqing’s grand wedding procession set out in full splendor from the Marquis Ding’an Estate.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
