Gu Changqing’s wedding procession was an impressive sight. Aside from the awe-inspiring Gu Family Army, he was accompanied by his three younger brothers——Gu Chengfeng, Gu Chenglin, and Gu Yan. There was also Gu Xiaoshun, who, though not related by blood, was treated as a true younger brother.

All four of them wore matching robes of richly embroidered sapphire-blue brocade. Their postures were straight, their features handsome and refined. It was, without question, the ancient world’s most dazzling groomsmen group.

The reason Xiao Heng’s groomsman did not receive this particular honor was mainly because Little Jing Kong alone was not enough to form a group; he was a solo act.

The capital hadn’t been this lively since the Little Marquis of Zhao married the daughter of Duke An. That wedding had resembled a military parade, and now that the young master of the Gu Family Army was taking a wife, the grandeur could be no less.

The groomsmen’s striking looks already drew countless gazes, but the one who made hearts race most was, of course, the groom himself.

From the time Gu Changqing could remember, he had either been training in the barracks or fighting on the battlefield. The silver armor he always wore was as cold and unyielding as the “Yama” title he bore.

But today, he changed into the wedding robe he would wear only once in his life. In an instant, he seemed to transform, stunning beyond compare, as radiant as a spring blossom.

After the Grand Secretary’s wedding, the hearts of the capital’s maidens had just barely recovered; now they shattered once more. Another man of impossible beauty had become someone else’s husband.

……

The Yuan Residence

Inside Yuan Baolin’s boudoir, Madame Yuan was weeping like a waterfall.

Her daughter had been frail since childhood and had been sent to a Taoist temple to be raised. Now, after finally shedding the Taoist robes, she was to don a bride’s gown.

Dressed in a phoenix coronet and scarlet wedding robes, Yuan Baolin had lost her former Taoist coolness. Her lips were a vivid red, her beauty dazzling and full of life.

“Mother, don’t cry.” Yuan Baolin comforted her gently. “I’m only getting married, not leaving forever. I can still come back home.”

Madame Yuan slapped her daughter’s hand lightly, glaring at her through tears. “You mustn’t come back whenever you please! Once you’re married, you’re a daughter-in-law, and you must follow the rules of your husband’s household!”

Yuan Baolin pouted. It’s not like we’re a real couple anyway.

Their marriage agreement clearly stated that she could return to her family whenever she wished, and Gu Changqing could not stop her.

As for propriety, since he was giving her convenience, she naturally wouldn’t make things hard for him. She could at least keep up appearances.

“Alright, alright, I know.” Yuan Baolin sighed helplessly. “You’ve already said it eight hundred times. I could recite it by now.”

Madame Yuan dabbed her tears with a handkerchief. “That’s only because you grew up in a temple. I’m afraid you don’t know how to behave in a proper household.”

“I do know.” Yuan Baolin replied quickly. “I’ve been learning.”

After all, all those romance stories said exactly how one should act!

“Elder sister…” Yuan Tong sobbed, running up to hug her. “I don’t want you to go…”

“Alright, alright.” Yuan Baolin said, soothing both her mother and her sister at once.

The matchmaker standing nearby was utterly stunned. She had seen brides crying their hearts out while being comforted by their mothers, but never a bride calmly comforting everyone else.

When the auspicious hour arrived, Yuan Baolin’s elder brother carried her out of the boudoir on his back.

Behind them, Yuan Tong ran after her, crying the whole way. “Sister… sister…”

Gu Changqing received his bride and bowed deeply to his new parents-in-law. “Father, Mother, please rest assured, I will take good care of Baolin.”

Madame Yuan could hardly speak through her tears.

Father Yuan, his eyes red, gave Gu Changqing’s shoulder a firm pat. “Remember what you said. Go now, Baolin is entrusted to you.”

As soon as Gu Changqing left with the bride, Father Yuan finally broke down. He turned away, covering his face with a large hand, and burst into loud sobs. “Uwahhh… Baolin’s married off…”

Madame Yuan, who had been weeping bitterly just moments before, froze mid-sob. She stared at her husband as though seeing a ghost.

—after all, when someone suddenly cries even louder than you, it’s enough to shock you right out of your own tears.

……

The wedding procession bustled its way to the Marquis Ding’an Estate.

Gu Changqing dismounted and walked to the bridal sedan, extending a long, well-defined hand.

Yuan Baolin had planned to step down by herself, but under the red veil she caught sight of the hand reaching toward her.

She hesitated for a moment.

She understood the need to play the role properly. Taking his hand just for show wouldn’t hurt.

Gently, she placed her soft, delicate hand into Gu Changqing’s palm.

Gu Changqing, who had little experience dealing with women, had only ever been close to his sister. His sister’s hands were rough and calloused from work and training. Yuan Baolin’s hand, however, was utterly different.

It was a fragile, tender hand.

He couldn’t help worrying that if he held it too tightly, he might accidentally break it.

He took the bride’s hand and helped her down from the bridal sedan.

The wedding matron, who was supposed to arrive earlier, hurried over with the red silk ribbon. There had been a small mishap just now, but fortunately the groom had already helped the bride down himself; otherwise, it would have been quite awkward.

Smiling, the wedding matron handed the red silk ribbon to the couple.

Holding each end of the ribbon, the two walked toward the main gates of the estate.

The bride was to cross a saddle and then step on roof tiles, which were both part of the traditional wedding rites.

Crossing the saddle went smoothly enough, but when it came to stepping on the tiles, Gu Xiaoshun suddenly gasped, slapped Gu Yan on the shoulder, and whispered, “Those are my cement tiles! Who mixed them up!”

“What cement tiles?” Asked Gu Yan, puzzled. He had chosen the thinnest tiles, specifically so they would shatter easily.

Gu Xiaoshun clutched his head in despair. “It’s over, it’s over! Those tiles were the ones big sis taught me to make. I made them to patch Mistress(Lady Nan)’s roof! Even I can’t break them!”

In the State of Zhao, if a bride failed to break the tile beneath her foot, it was considered a bad omen, signifying misfortune and even unchastity.

Unaware of all this, Yuan Baolin lifted her foot and stepped down.

Gu Changqing’s gaze swept over the tile. He instantly sensed something was wrong, and the moment Yuan Baolin’s foot touched it, he pressed his fingers together and released a burst of internal force. The cement tile shattered instantly.

Yuan Baolin stared in shock at the fragments beneath her feet. “Huh? Am I that strong?”

Gu Xiaoshun gave her a thumbs-up. “Sister-in-law… what amazing foot strength!”

Expressionless, Gu Changqing took Yuan Baolin’s hand and led her toward the main hall.

Inside, Marquis Gu and Yao shi sat in their high-backed ceremonial chairs. Marquis Gu was grinning so broadly his eyes had nearly vanished, and Yao shi was equally delighted.

“First bow to Heaven and Earth.”

“Second bow to the parents.”

“Husband and Wife bow to each other——”

Yuan Baolin and Gu Changqing misjudged the distance, both bowing very earnestly and their foreheads collided with a thud.

“Ow!” Yuan Baolin cried out, clutching her head in pain.

Gu Changqing’s expression stiffened. He lowered his voice and said, “My apologies.”

The gathered guests burst into laughter.

Afterward, the bride was escorted to the bridal chamber. She sat down on the bridal bed that Gu Xiaobao had earlier rolled around on for good luck. Gu Changqing glanced at her and said, “I’ll go entertain the guests outside. If you’re hungry, help yourself to something to eat.”

Yuan Baolin replied, “Then help me lift my veil first.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
