Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

After a long moment of stunned silence, the two of them simultaneously tilted their heads upward, first glancing at the sky and then sweeping their gazes around their surroundings.

Taoist Qingfeng had come with the sole intention of killing Liao Chen. In order to avoid harming innocent people, he had pursued him all the way until they had left the inner city, arriving at this desolate, abandoned stretch of wilderness before finally engaging in combat.

Although it could not be said that there was not a single soul within ten miles of the area, it was indeed a place rarely visited by anyone.

“How did a child… come here?” Taoist Qingfeng asked in confusion.

Liao Chen lifted his gaze toward the bright moon above. A trace of confusion flickered across his alluring peach-blossom eyes as he raised his hand and pointed toward the vast, boundless sky. “It seemed…to have fallen from the heavens.”

“How could that be possible?” Taoist Qingfeng said calmly.

Even if knives were to rain down from the sky, a child could never possibly fall.

He stood up, holding the child in his arms.

“What are you doing?” Liao Chen asked.

Taoist Qingfeng looked around warily. “Someone must have been here just now.”

After saying that, he ignored Liao Chen and intended to search the area nearby while carrying the child, but Liao Chen called out to stop him.

“Hey, pompous Taoist.” Liao Chen raised an eyebrow and glanced at the way Taoist Qingfeng was holding the child. “That’s not how you hold a baby.”

Taoist Qingfeng looked down at his own posture, unable to see what exactly was wrong with it.

Liao Chen muttered with disdain, “Are you holding a book? Who carries a baby with both arms clamped tight like that?”

Little Xiao Cong’s small face, squished between Taoist Qingfeng’s arms, was filled with utter despair, as if silently voicing his dissatisfaction.

How could someone who looked so immortal-like be so utterly terrible at holding a baby?

Taoist Qingfeng ignored the child’s resentful little gaze, but still turned to ask Liao Chen, “Then how should I hold him?”

Liao Chen gave him an incredulous look and sighed. “Taoist, oh, Taoist. Tell me, how exactly did you grow up?

He was face-blind, direction-blind, and apparently didn’t even know how to hold a child.

Clicking his tongue twice, Liao Chen rose to his feet with an air of nonchalance, unfazed by the oppressive aura emanating from Taoist Qingfeng, and demonstrated, “Watch carefully. A baby this small should be held more horizontally.”

He had long arms and large hands, and with just one arm, he was able to cradle Xiao Yan securely.

Xiao Yan lay nestled in the curve of his arm, leaning against his firm, warm chest. Listening to the strong, steady heartbeat that sounded much like her father’s, she felt an inexplicable sense of safety that she did not wish to reject.

“Wah~” Xiao Yan giggled at Liao Chen.

Liao Chen raised his eyebrows in satisfaction, glanced down at Xiao Yan, then turned toward Taoist Qingfeng. “See that? When you hold them comfortably, they’ll smile at you.”

Lacking any experience in raising children, Taoist Qingfeng watched several times before finally managing to imitate Liao Chen’s posture somewhat clumsily.

“Why isn’t he smiling?” Taoist Qingfeng frowned deeply as he looked at the cold-faced Xiao Cong.

Liao Chen replied with a faint, teasing smile. “Maybe he just doesn’t like you?”

Whether the child liked him or not hardly mattered, but hearing it come out of Liao Chen’s mouth somehow made it far more infuriating.

“Are we still fighting?” Liao Chen asked with a grin.

When it came to being insufferably provoking, Liao Chen could truly rival Marquis Xuanping.

Taoist Qingfeng shot him a cold glare sharp enough to cut, then turned away to search for the mysterious person who had delivered the children to this place.

Yet after combing through the entire vicinity, he found absolutely nothing, not even the faintest trace of a stranger.

Liao Chen, meanwhile, made no effort to help; he remained seated where he was, amusing himself with the little one in his arms.

The baby laughed easily at his teasing, which he found quite delightful.

When Taoist Qingfeng returned empty-handed, Liao Chen showed no surprise at all.

If the child truly hadn’t fallen from the heavens but had instead been placed there by someone, then regardless of that person’s intentions, since neither of them had noticed their arrival, there would be no way to trace their departure either.

Liao Chen glanced at the little medicine chest lying on the ground and said, “Instead of looking for people, perhaps you should take a look at this chest. It seems to have fallen along with the two children.”

Taoist Qingfeng dropped to one knee to examine it. The moonlight at the end of the month was too dim, so he pulled out a flame stick.

Seeing him light it directly above the children’s heads, Liao Chen’s brows twitched. “Hey, be careful, don’t set the child on fire!”

Taoist Qingfeng paused slightly. “Oh.”

He turned his head and struck the fire in another direction.

Little Xiao Cong’s tiny body trembled from head to toe.

It seemed that even the child could sense how dangerous this man was.

“Forget it, I’ll do it.” Liao Chen said as he rose to his feet and walked over, taking the flame stick from Taoist Qingfeng’s hand. He had once raised Jing Kong, and considering that one Jing Kong was worth ten ordinary children, by rough calculation, he was already the father of ten.

Handling both the child and the flame stick was no challenge for him.

Under the flickering glow of the flame, the two of them were finally able to see the little medicine chest clearly.

“It’s just an ordinary chest.” Taoist Qingfeng said.

This place, unlike the pristine and spotless secret chamber of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, was covered in dust.

The little medicine chest had landed in the dirt, leaving it grimy and dull, and because of that, Liao Chen failed to recognize at first glance that it was Gu Jiao’s box.

“Open it and take a look.” Liao Chen said.

Taoist Qingfeng used his free hand to try to open the chest.

But something unbelievable happened. This chest seemed almost fake, for it could not be pried open at all.

Even when he used his internal force, the result was the same.

Liao Chen handed the flame stick back to Taoist Qingfeng and said, “You hold this. Let me try.”

Taoist Qingfeng looked displeased by the gesture. “Do you think you’re stronger than me?”

Liao Chen chuckled lightly. “I don’t think so, it’s simply a fact.”

And then, in the next instant, reality struck him square in the face.

He snorted coldly. “What a useless box!”

Taoist Qingfeng said, “Now we’ve lost the last remaining clue.”

Liao Chen studied the faces of the two children carefully, and after a moment of deep thought, he murmured, “Don’t you think these two look somewhat familiar?”

“Hm?” Taoist Qingfeng couldn’t see it.

“Forget it, asking you is pointless.” Liao Chen said. “Let’s find an inn first. There are too many mosquitoes out here at night. Even if you don’t need to rest, the children will need a quiet place to sleep.”

“Why not report it to the authorities?” Taoist Qingfeng suggested.

Liao Chen sighed. “The Jingzhao Office is far from here. Besides, if we send such young children there, no one will take care of them.”

Taoist Qingfeng said nothing.

Liao Chen added, “If you don’t want to stay at an inn, you can just hand me the children. I can manage alone.”

Taoist Qingfeng saw through him immediately. “You’re trying to use this as an excuse to run away again!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
