Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The last time Liao Chen had abandoned him in Shengdu, he had spent several months searching for him. Then, when he was left behind again in the State of Zhao, it took him several more months to find him once more.

This time, no matter what, he would not fall for his tricks again.

Liao Chen waved his hand dismissively. “Suit yourself.”

With that, he calmly walked forward with Xiao Yan in his arms, gently teasing her as he went.

Xiao Yan burst into giggles, laughing sweetly.

Taoist Qingfeng frowned slightly, glancing down at the little one in his own arms, puzzled. “Why don’t you laugh?”

“Take the chest with you.” He called at Liao Chen’s retreating figure. “Perhaps we’ll find some new clues later.”

Liao Chen sighed helplessly, turned back, and picked up the little medicine chest.

The two of them soon arrived at the main street.

This was the outer city. Although not as prosperous or lively as the inner city, it was still bustling with activity.

A handsome monk and a celestial-looking Taoist, each holding a child, walked side by side through the crowded street, immediately drawing countless curious gazes from the townsfolk.

A monk and a Taoist, together?

And with two children?

What kind of world-shaking, heaven-defying tale was this?

Liao Chen himself couldn’t care less about how others looked at him, but the same could not be said for a certain someone.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have hunted Liao Chen for years simply because someone had once seen his “bird” under the moonlight because of him.

Liao Chen glanced at the Taoist beside him, who was pretending to remain composed, and suppressed his laughter before stepping into a nearby inn.

He looked at the Taoist who followed him inside. “Two rooms?”

Taoist Qingfeng replied in an icy tone, “Don’t even think about it.”

Liao Chen turned to the innkeeper and said, “One upper room.”

The innkeeper stood there staring blankly at the two men and the children in their arms, remaining dazed for quite a while before finally snapping back to his senses. “Ah, yes, yes, we do have an upper room available!”

He quickly called for a waiter to lead them to the best upper room in the inn.

Once inside, Liao Chen set the dusty little medicine chest down on the table first, then gently placed the small child in his arms onto the soft bed.

After doing so, he turned and began walking toward the door.

“Where are you going?” Taoist Qingfeng asked coldly.

Liao Chen looked back at the two children and replied, “I’m going to get them something to eat. Don’t worry, I won’t run away.”

Taoist Qingfeng said, “You have a record. Your credibility is terrible. I don’t believe you.”

Liao Chen countered, “Then why don’t you go instead?”

Taoist Qingfeng replied in a matter-of-fact tone, “If I go, you’ll still run away.”

Liao Chen pressed a hand to his forehead in frustration. “Then what do you suggest we do?”

With a perfectly serious expression, Taoist Qingfeng said, “Hand over your Shadow Command Token.”

“Hiss——” Liao Chen drew in a sharp breath through his teeth. The Shadow Command Token was the most precious thing he carried. It could never be given away lightly.

But if he refused, this stubborn man would never let it go.

“Fine, fine, take it.” Liao Chen said at last, pulling the Shadow Command Token from inside his robe and tossing it toward him.

Taoist Qingfeng caught it effortlessly. “Good. Now you may go.”

Liao Chen shook his head helplessly and went downstairs to the kitchen to find some food.

Judging by their size, the two children appeared to be about five months old, old enough to eat some smooth rice porridge. So he asked the cook to prepare two small bowls of it and ordered a few delicate and flavorful side dishes, telling the waiter to bring them up to the room later.

He carried the two bowls of porridge upstairs on a tray, but just as he reached the doorway, he ran straight into Xuanyuan Qi, who was coming from the far end of the corridor.

Father and son both froze in shock.

“Father?”

“Zheng’er?”

Xuanyuan Qi had come out of the city to attend to business. He had just secretly met an important figure at the inn, but he had not expected to run into his son, whom he hadn’t seen for days, here of all places.

“Zheng’er, what are you doing here?” He asked with a puzzled look, his gaze dropping to the tray in his son’s hands. “What’s that?”

Before Liao Chen could answer, a waiter came over carrying a bucket of hot water and said to him, “Honored guest, you and your companion ordered hot water, shall I bring it to your room now?”

Xuanyuan Qi’s entire body stiffened in shock. “You… and someone else… booked a room together?”

Liao Chen slapped a hand to his forehead. “Please don’t misunderstand, Father, it’s a Taoist.”

Xuanyuan Qi’s shoulders shook violently again. “You and a Taoist booked a room together?!”

Liao Chen motioned toward the two bowls of baby porridge on his tray, his expression utterly hopeless. “It’s because of the children…”

Xuanyuan Qi’s body trembled a third time, his voice rising in disbelief. “You even have children together?!”

“Father!” Liao Chen was nearly in tears. “It’s not that kind of relationship!”

Just as he said this, Taoist Qingfeng stepped out of the room holding the Shadow Command Token in his hand.

Xuanyuan Qi didn’t even look at the man’s face, his eyes went straight to the token, and in an instant, his entire being felt struck by lightning. He let out an earth-shaking roar. “You even gave him the family heirloom?!”

Xuanyuan Qi was so shocked that even his speech became more nimble.

The Shadow Command Token, as the symbol of the Lord of the Shadow’s identity, had always been something far more precious than one’s life. As long as the Shadow Command Token existed, the Shadow Division would be able to continue its legacy and be passed down from one generation to the next.

That was precisely why, when Xuanyuan Qi was being hunted by Shi Tian back then, he made sure to first pass the Shadow Command Token to the eight-year-old Xuanyuan Zheng.

In Xuanyuan Qi’s mind, if this wasn’t a family heirloom, then what else could it possibly be?

Such a precious object should never, under any circumstances, be away from its owner.

It was also because Taoist Qingfeng had seen how important it was that he instructed Liao Chen to leave it in his custody as collateral.

He himself did not know what had happened; he had only come out after hearing that Liao Chen seemed to have encountered some kind of trouble.

Liao Chen was someone he must kill. Others could not touch him, because the man had to die by his own hand.

And then he saw Xuanyuan Qi.

Xuanyuan Qi had already finished examining the Shadow Command Token, and he was utterly, thoroughly stunned. He, too, wanted to know who that Taoist could possibly be, so powerful that he could even draw away his son’s soul.

He raised his head to take a look.

Oh heavens!

A male Taoist?!

Taoist Qingfeng???

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
