Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

They had once fought side by side at the border, defending against foreign enemies. Although they were not particularly close, they had met on several occasions, so how could he not recognize the brave and battle-hardened Taoist Qingfeng who had fought shoulder to shoulder with his son?

He had even once sighed to Shangguan Yan about him, saying that the younger generation was truly formidable.

At that moment, it felt as if Xuanyuan Qi’s heart had been struck by a hundred thousand volts of lightning; he was completely done for.

He looked at his unfilial son with deep pain and bitterness and asked, “So this is the reason you said Jing Kong must continue the family line?”

Liao Chen was dumbfounded. What? Father, I said so many things to you, and this is the only sentence you remembered?

What I said was that I didn’t want to marry anyone, that I enjoyed being free, wandering wherever I pleased, living as a carefree monk!

Alas, even if he were to jump into the Yellow River, he would never be able to wash himself clean now.

Xuanyuan Qi looked at Taoist Qingfeng with a complicated expression. “You two… when did you get together?”

From the earlier exchange between father and son, Taoist Qingfeng had only caught the part about the family heirloom. After a moment of thought, he spoke truthfully, “He has been avoiding me all along. I only managed to find him recently. To prevent him from escaping again, I asked him to leave the Shadow Command Token with me as collateral. Since it is a family heirloom, I should now return it to Supreme Commander.”

Xuanyuan Qi did not rush to take back the Shadow Command Token. Instead, he turned to glare fiercely at his son, gritting his teeth as he whispered, “You even had the nerve to keep running away from him?”

Scoundrel!

Taoist Qingfeng, unaware of the hilarious misunderstanding between father and son, spoke earnestly, “Supreme Commander, there is a personal grudge between him and me. Since you have caught us together today, I might as well speak frankly. His life, I must take it.”

Xuanyuan Qi was struck dumb. Was his “daughter-in-law” acting out of hatred born from love?

No, no, no, wait a minute!

What daughter-in-law?

He was a man!

Taoist Qingfeng continued, “I chased him from the State of Yan all the way to the State of Zhao, and then from the State of Zhao to this place. It took me immense effort to finally catch him. Even if Supreme Commander chooses to intervene, I’m afraid I’ll have to offend you.”

Chased him all the way to the State of Zhao…

Could it be that his ‘daughter-in-law’ truly was Taoist Qingfeng?

Was this… solid proof?!

Xuanyuan Qi felt as though ten thousand arrows had pierced his chest. He staggered, nearly collapsing to the ground!

Just when he was completely at a loss as to what to do with this “young couple,” the baby inside the room suddenly wailed loudly.

——You grown-ups are so slow! The baby is already hungry!

Hearing the cry of the child, Xuanyuan Qi suddenly remembered that his son had mentioned they even had a child together. Trembling, he looked toward the two men standing by the doorway, his expression filled with indescribable conflict as he asked the ultimate question from the depths of his soul, “...Between the two of you, which one gave birth?”

Liao Chen: “…”

Taoist Qingfeng: “…”

……

Xuanyuan Qi had once followed the Lord of the Shadows for many years, so his familiarity with the little medicine chest was much deeper than that of Liao Chen. Because of that, he recognized it at a single glance.

Then, when he looked again at the pair of twins who were the spitting image of little JiaoJiao and little Ah Heng, he almost immediately understood who they were.

After hearing that the two had fallen from the sky along with that chest, his suspicion became all the more certain.

He turned to the two men and said, “I’ll take the children back. As for this matter, keep it buried in your stomachs. You’re not allowed to ask about anything else.”

“I have no objections.” Liao Chen replied, glancing toward Taoist Qingfeng.

Taoist Qingfeng said respectfully, “I shall obey the Supreme Commander’s command.”

Xuanyuan Qi had someone hire a carriage, then got on it holding the dragon-and-phoenix twins in his arms, taking the little medicine chest with him as well.

“I’ll be going.” He said.

Seizing the opportunity, Liao Chen quickly tried to slip away. “Father, I’ll go back with you.”

Xuanyuan Qi promptly kicked his son off and then rode away in the carriage without a backward glance!

Left behind and firmly in Taoist Qingfeng’s grasp, Liao Chen could only stand there speechless.

……

Meanwhile, when the dragon-and-phoenix twins had suddenly vanished into thin air, the palace maids immediately reported to Wu Sixi. Wu Sixi hurried to the scene and questioned everyone who had been in the pavilion, then rushed straight to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall without delay.

However, since the little medicine chest was no longer there, the passage leading to the operating room had been sealed off. When Ye Qing opened the door, all he found inside was an empty chamber.

After Gu Jiao returned to the palace and heard the news, she too immediately came to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.

Since the little medicine chest was gone, it was likely that the dragon-and-phoenix twins had been teleported somewhere else by it once again.

“Where could they have gone?” Ye Qing asked.

Gu Jiao analyzed the situation calmly. “Based on what I currently know, the little medicine chest generally only teleports to places near its fixed coordinates. There are two fixed points, one is the operating room of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, and the other should be Hidden Night Island. There are also two moving coordinates, one is me, and the other was once the Godfather. Now, perhaps, it has added the twins as new coordinates.”

Ye Qing thought for a moment and said, “In other words, it either teleports to one of you or to Hidden Night Island?”

Gu Jiao pondered briefly. “Not necessarily.”

It was known that tearing through space required energy from the little medicine chest, which meant there was another possibility.

If its energy ran low, it might have fallen randomly halfway through.

After listening to her reasoning, Ye Qing was left somewhat speechless.

Just as Gu Jiao and Ye Qing were preparing to split up with the people from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall to search for the twins, Xuanyuan Qi arrived in a rush, one adorable baby tucked under each arm.

When everyone saw that the two little ones were safe and sound, they all let out a collective sigh of relief.

“Supreme Commander.” Ye Qing greeted with a bow. Xuanyuan Qi nodded slightly. “Imperial Advisor Ye.”

Ye Qing: Hand me one of the children.

Xuanyuan Qi: Not a chance. Try and take them if you can.

Gu Jiao accepted the dusty little medicine chest from the coachman.

Wu Sixi had already finished his interrogation and found that the culprit was Zhao Yu, who had harbored wicked thoughts and intended to harm the twins.

Considering that the little medicine chest had once saved the twins’ lives, Gu Jiao managed to suppress her urge to split it apart for firewood.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
