Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

When Xiao Ji finished repairing the tent and returned, Princess Xinyang asked in her usual calm tone, “Where did Long Yi go?”

Xiao Ji replied, “He went to Chang Jing’s tent, just next door.”

“Tonight, I…”

“You will sleep here tonight.”

“Then you…”

“Of course I will sleep here as well.”

Princess Xinyang’s eyelashes trembled lightly, and her lips moved several times, yet in the end she did not say the words telling him not to share the bed.

Resources in the military camp were limited, the bed was cold and hard, and even the blanket was thin and damp.

Princess Xinyang lay stiffly beside him, her hands and feet icy cold.

The atmosphere in the military camp was ultimately quite different from that of the capital, and here, Xiao Ji carried himself with less of that carefree, flirtatious unruliness, while gaining a great deal more of the solemn sharpness that belonged to a battlefield general.

For example, at this moment, he did not tease her as he normally would.

He closed his eyes and planned tomorrow’s arrangements in his mind.

“Xiao Ji.” Princess Xinyang spoke in a soft voice.

“What is it?” He pulled himself out of his battle-focused thoughts right away.

Princess Xinyang’s throat moved slightly as she nervously rubbed her fingers together and asked in a quiet voice, “I… I am cold.”

If this had been in the past, he would certainly have teased her with something like, “Qin Fengwen, if you want this Marquis to hold you, just say it outright.”

But he did not.”

Instead, under the blanket he gently took her hand, and when he found that her hand was freezing, he shifted his side of the blanket toward her. “Is this a little better?”

“Still cold.” Princess Xinyang said.

In the darkness, after a moment of hesitation, he extended his strong arms and pulled her into his embrace.

His distinct masculine scent washed over her, surrounding her completely in an instant.

He loosened his own clothing so that her icy hands could press against the warm skin of his chest, and then he shifted his legs so her cold, almost block-like feet could rest on his heated, long legs.

“Is this better now?” he asked.

Princess Xinyang’s cheeks felt a little hot, and she thought that perhaps this man simply carried too much fiery heat within him.

She nodded, responding very softly, “Yes.”

“Qin Fengwen, stop moving.”

“I am not moving.”

“Your feet.”

“The frostbite itch.” She muttered, unable to endure it any longer, rubbing the itching spot lightly against his calf; surely this did not count as moving, right?

She reached her hand downward, intending to scratch the itch, but as her hand slid downward, she accidentally brushed against something terrifying, some fearsome beast, and she jolted in shock, her face instantly turning scarlet.

Xiao Ji’s voice carried a darker, rougher tone. “I already told you not to move.”

She choked, then snapped back at him in anger and embarrassment, “I was not touching you there!”

In the darkness, Xiao Ji stared at her deeply, his voice low and husky as he asked, “Qin Fengwen, has your illness gotten better?”

Princess Xinyang froze.

Her illness… her condition where she could not come into contact with men…

And now she was pressed tightly against a man, held firmly in his arms without the smallest gap.

She had not shown any symptoms.

No, no. She probably was showing symptoms after all.

Her heart was beating wildly, thudding uncontrollably like a little deer that had run in and was crashing around inside her chest.

Her head buzzed, her mouth felt dry, and she could barely catch her breath.

Although Princess Xinyang was already a mother, she was, in matters of the heart, far less experienced than Gu Jiao, because while Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng had weathered hardships together for four or five years and had spent every morning and evening in each other’s company as they shared countless intimate moments, Princess Xinyang had almost nothing in this area.

In the past, she had never been able to fall in love with any man, which meant she simply could not understand what feelings between a man and a woman were supposed to be like.

Xiao Ji gazed at her taut and rigid figure through the ink-dark night and said, “Qin Fengwen, are you having another episode?”

“I…” Princess Xinyang covered her wildly pounding heart, feeling as though it was about to leap out of her throat, and the closer he leaned toward her and the more he spoke to her, the more violently it beat.

Was this truly an episode?

Why did it feel even more intense than before?

Her heart was burning restlessly.

Xiao Ji’s eyes darkened; he loosened the arm with which he had been holding her and pulled back to put a bit of distance between them.

Princess Xinyang spoke instinctively, “Don’t——”

Don’t touch me!

Go away!

Those were the words that flashed through Xiao Ji’s mind, for she almost always said something like that whenever he approached her, and so even the fingertips resting lightly on her waist withdrew instantly.

The heated surge of desire and longing within his body cooled little by little, and he returned to the solitary and icy calm he always carried before battle.

Princess Xinyang felt him actively avoid her, just as he had on their wedding night when she pressed a dagger to his chest and said those hurtful words, after which he had withdrawn in exactly the same way.

Had he just thought she wanted him to go away?

That was not it.

She drew a deep breath and resolved to finish the words she had tried to say earlier. “Don’t…”

“Lord Marquis!”

A guard’s voice suddenly sounded from outside the tent.

Xiao Ji’s expression sharpened as he sat upright; he lifted the blanket with a quick, light motion that hardly allowed any cold air to seep in.

He casually pressed the edges of the blanket down, tucking it so that it sealed the gap around her.

Wearing only thin clothing, he stepped out of the tent and lowered his voice. “What is it?”

“Urgent news from the front lines. The situation has changed. The Dongyi people…”

Princess Xinyang heard up to that point, but the rest was spoken in a deliberately lowered voice, likely due to Xiao Ji’s instruction, and she could no longer make out the details.

After a brief moment, Xiao Ji turned and came back into the tent, beginning to dress and tie up his hair.

Princess Xinyang’s heart tightened, and she rose to ask, “Is there going to be a battle?”

“I have to go to the front line.” Xiao Ji tightened his belt, picked up the armor hanging on the rack and put it on with decisive, crisp movements, each sound carrying the sharp aura of a warrior ready for war.

He always carried an air of elegance and effortless authority when he faced her, and this was the first time she watched him prepare for battle.

What should a wife do?

Should she help him put on his armor, or should she send him off?

Princess Xinyang stared at the gleaming armor on the rack, and her fingertips twitched slightly.

He turned back.

She swiftly drew her hand back under the blanket. “You light the lamp.”

Xiao Ji took up the cold helmet and put it on. “I can see.”

Outside, the sound of cavalry readying themselves filled the air, clearly revealing how urgent the situation was.

Fully armored, Xiao Ji grabbed the longsword from the rack and said to Princess Xinyang, “I’ll bring Yu Jin over. Do not leave the camp unless necessary.”

After saying that, he promptly strode out of the tent.

Words urging him to take care surged into Princess Xinyang’s throat, yet she could not force out even a single syllable.

The tent flaps whipped violently in the cold wind, and the warmth inside the blankets dissipated rapidly with his departure, making the tent feel as cold as an ice cellar in an instant.

“Move out!”

His sharp and commanding voice resounded through the frigid air as five hundred iron-clad cavalry braved the swirling snow, charging fearlessly toward the State of Zhao’s final eastern defense line, the Donglin Pass.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
