“Princess!”
Yu Jin lifted the curtain and entered the tent, and the first thing she did was take out the flame stick from her breast pocket to light the oil lamp on the table.
Then she came to the bedside, and seeing Princess Xinyang staring blankly toward the entrance, she gently helped her lie down and said with a tone full of concern, “Don’t let yourself catch a chill.”
“He left.” Princess Xinyang said in a daze.
Yu Jin removed her cloak; although she had only walked a few short steps, she was already covered in snow, and as for Lord Marquis and his men who had ridden out in the blizzard, she could not imagine how cold they must be.
She hung up her cloak and sat down beside the bed, tucking in the corners of Princess Xinyang’s blanket as she comforted her softly. “Lord Marquis has been through countless battles. He will definitely return safely.”
Princess Xinyang said quietly, “I hope so.”
……
Xiao Ji’s departure lasted for many days.
Princess Xinyang did not expose her own identity, and the Dongyi princess, likely having received Xiao Ji’s instructions, never revealed who she was to others.
Furthermore, the Dongyi princess’ attitude toward her had become noticeably more respectful, which was probably also something Xiao Ji had emphasized before leaving.
She was the first woman to ever live in Xiao Ji’s tent, and none of the soldiers dared show her disrespect, and even if someone had dared, that person would not be able to defeat Long Yi anyway.
Xiao Ming was residing in this same encampment, and Princess Xinyang visited him every single day.
In the past she had never cared about Xiao Ji or anyone around him; she was not even familiar with Xiao Ming, who was his only younger brother.
People said the two brothers had a good relationship.
But as for how they actually interacted, she truly had no memory or impression at all.
She understood far, far too little about every aspect of him.
“You are here.” Inside Xiao Ming’s tent, the Dongyi princess turned and glanced at Princess Xinyang.
Princess Xinyang approached, her eyes landing on that face which bore three parts resemblance to Xiao Ji, and she asked, “How is your father today? Has he woken up?”
The Dongyi princess shook her head. “No.”
After spending several days with her, Princess Xinyang realized that the girl was not cruelhearted, and her earlier arrogance had simply been her means of surviving in this place.
Her situation was awkward. She was Xiao Ming’s daughter, yet she had not been formally acknowledged by him in time.
Xiao Ji could not make that decision for his younger brother, so her identity had not been officially announced.
As a girl from the Dongyi Tribe who had come to negotiate peace, if she did not act arrogant, she would be easily bullied.
Princess Xinyang asked, “Your mother…”
The Dongyi princess let out a bitter little laugh. “My mother passed away long ago, and I was raised by my aunt. Later, my aunt’s husband brought home a man, and that man asked who my parents were after noticing that I resembled someone. I do not know how he investigated it, but he eventually discovered that I was the child of your State of Zhao’s General Weiyuan. My aunt sold me to that man, and he took me to see the Dongyi King. The Dongyi King then used me to lure your General Weiyuan out. He was poisoned because he came to save me. Yet the Dongyi King still dared to send me here to negotiate peace. Ridiculous, isn’t it?”
Princess Xinyang said, “The Dongyi King hoped that Xiao Ji would kill you to avenge his younger brother, and in doing so, sow discord between him and Xiao Ming. But Xiao Ji is not that kind of man.”
The Dongyi princess felt her own story held little worth, so she shifted the topic and looked at Princess Xinyang. “There are rumors that your relationship with Lord Marquis is not good, but it does not look that way to me when you come here every day to ask for military reports.”
“I…” Princess Xinyang felt embarrassed as her little secret was exposed, and she said, “I am an imperial princess of the State of Zhao. It is only natural for me to care about military affairs.”
The Dongyi princess’ curiosity blazed even stronger. “So you came on imperial orders? Are you truly here because the Emperor sent you to monitor Marquis Xuanping?”
Was this girl incapable of speaking properly?
Had her relationship with Xiao Ji deteriorated so badly that even the Dongyi people had heard about it?
Princess Xinyang felt a bit angry.
……
Every day, news of battle arrived from Donglin Pass. The Dongyi forces had captured a general of the State of Zhao and then lured the State of Zhao’s army into the forest, where the Dongyi excelled at guerrilla warfare, using the terrain to deal considerable losses on the State of Zhao’s army.
Xiao Ji, instead of confronting them head-on, took an unconventional approach by sneaking with Chang Jing into the Dongyi main camp and assassinating the Dongyi’s great general.
Until the tenth day, Donglin Pass continued to send back news after news of victory.
But on the morning of the eleventh day, a devastating message swept through the entire military camp. Xiao Ji, while covering the retreat of wounded soldiers, had been struck by a stray arrow sent by the Dongyi, and his condition was unknown, suspended between life and death.
A chill rose from the soles of Princess Xinyang’s feet and surged upward, making her feel as though she had been plunged into an ice cellar.
Yu Jin looked at her in worry and said, “Princess, perhaps the military report is mistaken. Please don’t panic yet. I will send someone to inquire——Princess, what are you doing!”
Princess Xinyang had already stepped out of the tent.
She walked straight to the stables, selected an excellent horse, and by the time Yu Jin caught up, Princess Xinyang had already mounted.
Yu Jin grabbed the reins with alarm, staring at her in fear. “Princess… Lord Marquis told you to wait for him in the camp… please do not act on impulse…”
Princess Xinyang was not someone prone to impulsiveness. Even when the former Liang Wangfei had approached her with selfish and disgusting intentions, she had not thrown her out without considering the consequences.
But at this moment, she could not control herself. She could not stop herself from going to find him.
She thought that she had found the answer Yu Jin told her to seek.
But he did not yet know her answer.
She needed to tell him.
Princess Xinyang’s horse disappeared into the white expanse of the snowy world, and Long Yi followed closely behind like a shadow.
The two of them reached Donglin Pass.
After arriving, Yu Jin’s suspicion was confirmed. The person hit by the stray arrow was not Marquis Xuanping Xiao Ji, but Chang Jing.
Chang Jing was not seriously injured; it was only a scrape and he had fallen with Marquis Xuanping into a snow pit in the forest, which had caused the earlier misunderstanding.
“Where is Marquis Xuanping?” Princess Xinyang asked Chang Jing inside the wounded soldiers’ barracks.
Chang Jing said with sorrow, “I do not know. After we fell into the snow pit, I fainted. When I woke up, I had already been carried back here by him.”
Princess Xinyang summoned Zhang Hu, a member of the garrison, and revealed her identity to him. “Take me to the site.”
“Yes!” Zhang Hu cupped his fists in salute.
The group proceeded to the forest where Xiao Ji and Chang Jing had met with misfortune. Strictly speaking, this was not Dongyi territory, the terrain was too treacherous, and even the Dongyi people, who excelled at forest warfare, dared not wander here.
Zhang Hu said, “Princess, it is dangerous ahead. Allow me to go instead.”
Princess Xinyang said calmly, “No need.”
They followed the footprints in the snow, searching all the way forward. When they reached a small mountain hollow, Long Yi suddenly dropped to the ground, scraped the snow aside with his hands, and pulled out a waist token.
It was the token of Marquis Xuanping Estate.
Long Yi continued digging and cleared a small hole.
He stuck his head into the opening, looked around, and then shouted loudly, “Wooo—waaah—”
“Long Yi, did you find something?” Princess Xinyang came over and asked.
Long Yi pulled his head out of the hole and said to her, “There is someone down below. He is injured, and his breathing is very weak.”
As he spoke, he handed her the token.
Princess Xinyang recognized it instantly, her eyes lighting up as she said, “This is Xiao Ji’s personal item! The person below… could it be Xiao Ji?”
“We cannot go down.” Long Yi said.
Zhang Hu approached, crouched opposite Long Yi, and examined the hole carefully. His expression grew grave, and when he saw the soldiers with shovels approaching, he shouted, “Do not come any closer!”
The soldiers immediately halted.
Zhang Hu said nervously, “The rock above this hole is unstable. It could collapse at any moment. If the person below truly is Lord Marquis, he might be crushed to death if the rock falls.”
Princess Xinyang looked at the tiny opening, unable to understand how a grown man had fallen through such a narrow space.
“Can the opening be widened?” She asked.
Zhang Hu shook his head. “No. Digging will cause it to collapse. The only solution is to see whether there is another exit below and have Lord Marquis come out through that exit.”
Princess Xinyang clenched her fingers. “And if there is no other exit?”
Zhang Hu said, “Then Lord Marquis must force his way out through this hole.”
Princess Xinyang frowned. “But Long Yi already said his breathing is very weak. How can he possibly climb out on his own?”
Zhang Hu lowered his voice. “Then… we must wait for Lord Marquis to recover…”
Princess Xinyang said angrily, “He is cold and starving down there, how is he supposed to recover! He will freeze to death in a day!”
Zhang Hu felt wronged as well. It was not that he did not want to save Lord Marquis, but he truly had no solution for the impossible situation they were facing.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
