Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Xiao Ji’s injuries were severe, and although his voice was feeble and lacking strength, that irritating little tone of his was still perfectly present. “Qin Fengwen… do not think that merely because this Marquis is injured… you can seize the opportunity… to do whatever you wish… to this Marquis…”
Princess Xinyang suddenly lost all her urge to cry.
His body was burning with an intense fever, and his consciousness was gradually becoming blurry, yet the hand gripping her wrist never loosened.
It seemed as though all the strength he had left was concentrated in that single grasp.
Princess Xinyang lifted her other hand to feel his forehead. “You’re burning up. How did you end up here? Weren’t you and Chang Jing the ones who fell into the snow pit up ahead?”
Beneath the snow pit lay this very underground cavern. He had pushed Chang Jing back up while he himself fell down, and when two large stone slabs collapsed afterward, they sealed off the opening completely.
He had dragged his injured body along the opposite direction and did not know how far he had gone before his strength ran out and he could no longer walk.
Princess Xinyang said to him, “Wait here for me, I will call Long Yi.”
He did not let go.
Feeling the pressure on her wrist, Princess Xinyang furrowed her brows in worry, but she could not forcibly pry his hand open. She turned her head, shouting loudly toward the direction she had come from, “Long Yi! I found Xiao Ji!”
Crack!
A splitting sound came from above.
This place was going to collapse!
“Can you still walk? The cave is going to fall in!” Princess Xinyang asked him.
Xiao Ji slowly loosened his grip.
He could no longer walk.
But she could.
Long Yi and Zhang Hu did not dare to move recklessly at all, because a single wrong step could cause the entire cave to collapse, burying both Xiao Ji and Princess Xinyang underneath.
Zhang Hu was on the verge of breaking down. “Princess, dear ancestor, why did you go down there!”
The death of a marquis was already enough to cost him dearly, and if a princess of the country were added to that, his life would not be spared!
Listening to the increasing sound of cracking above, Long Yi suddenly pulled Zhang Hu back a step.
A deafening rumble shook the air as the cavern collapsed!
Starting from the tiny opening, the collapse spread through the cavern in both directions, and the rocks at the side came crumbling down inch by inch.
Princess Xinyang grabbed Xiao Ji’s arm with all her strength, trying to pull him up.
Just as the falling rocks were about to crush the two of them, Xiao Ji, who had long exhausted all his strength, suddenly found some inexplicable burst of power, and he wrapped his arms around her waist and flipped her over.
Boom!
The area where they had been standing collapsed entirely.
Chunks of rock crashed down right beside them, and Xiao Ji used his tall yet weakened body to cover her, his arms encircling and shielding her on both sides.
Fragment after fragment struck his back, and he clenched his teeth as he endured it, the veins on his forehead and arms bulging, while large beads of cold sweat dripped down like falling rain.
Only after several long breaths did the earth finally grow still again.
The path they had taken was completely sealed off, leaving them only two choices: continue forward together, or remain there forever.
Princess Xinyang raised her hand to touch his face. “Xiao Ji.”
Xiao Ji did not move.
His strength had long been depleted, and it was only sheer determination that had kept him in that protective position.
He had already lost consciousness, with only his body remaining rigidly propped over her.
“Xiao Ji… Xiao Ji… Xiao Ji, can you hear me?”
Princess Xinyang could not wake him.
His body temperature was rapidly fading, and his breathing was growing weaker.
Her trembling hand moved up to his neck.
She could no longer feel his pulse.
His heartbeat… had stopped.
Princess Xinyang lay beneath him, and tears immediately burst from her eyes. “Xiao Ji… Xiao Ji, do not die… please do not die…”
She had still lost him.
When had he begun to enter her heart?
Was it when he killed the Old Liang Wang, or when he retrieved the antidote for Qing’er, or perhaps that freezing winter night when he stood guard outside her birthing chamber for an entire night…
She could not pinpoint the exact moment; she only knew that everything had come far, far too late.
“I still have not told you… that my illness has healed… that I will no longer push you away… open your eyes and look at me…”
“Xiao Ji, look at me…”
Her tears flowed like a fountain.
So this was what it felt like, this heart-rending pain of losing the person one loved.
It hurt so much.
But why had she realized it only now?
Why had she been unable to understand her own heart just a little earlier?
“Xiao Ji…” She clutched his clothing with all her strength and cried until her voice was completely raw.
“Cough… cough!”
The weight that had been weakly pressed over her suddenly heaved as Xiao Ji gasped sharply and began to cough violently as if he were about to cough out his lungs.
Princess Xinyang jolted hard in shock, her tear-filled eyes widening as she stared at him in the darkness without blinking. “Xiao Ji! Xiao Ji!”
Xiao Ji turned his head and coughed fiercely, nearly unable to control himself.
Princess Xinyang hurriedly supported him so that he could sit leaning against the wall, choking out the question, “Are you alright?”
Xiao Ji panted, “I missed a breath just now… I nearly died…”
Princess Xinyang’s tears poured even more fiercely.
She was not someone who cried easily, nor was she pregnant right now; she could not understand why her tears simply would not stop today.
Xiao Ji leaned weakly against the wall, speaking through pain and exhaustion. “Qin Fengwen, what were you… babbling about just now?”
“Nothing.” Princess Xinyang wiped her tears with great seriousness, doing her best to keep her tone steady. “Do you have a flame stick on you? Where are you hurt? Let me see.”
Xiao Ji lifted his left arm, which was actually more severely injured, though it had not bled, and with a strong, domineering motion pulled her into his embrace.
Her heart thumped violently, and she heard him whisper beside her ear, “I heard you, Qin Fengwen.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
