Xiao Ji and Qin Fengwen parading through the city with their concubine and male favorite caused a huge stir. Those who recognized Xiao Ji said he was with a concubine; those who recognized Qin Fengwen said he was with a male favorite; those who recognized both… didn’t believe it anyway.
No one in the capital believed they truly loved each other; at most, it was an imperial show.
“These nobles are all about appearances, outwardly united but inwardly divided, just putting on a show for us commoners. Who knows what they’re really like in private!”
A purchasing eunuch repeated this word-for-word to them.
Qin Fengwen’s face turned green.
Xiao Ji didn’t look much better. Refusing to give up, he said with domineering pride, “I had a daughter with the princess these past two years. What would they say about that?”
The eunuch forced himself to answer, “They all said the princess drugged you… and after… after using you, ran off, leaving you behind!”
Xiao Ji: “…”
Qin Fengwen: “…”
Xiao Heng had just left the cabinet when he heard about the commotion in the streets. Such a scene on his first day back in the capital, truly like his parents. He didn’t know what to say.
He returned home and asked if his parents were back. The servants said no, it seemed they had entered the palace.
How did the servants know? It all started with Long Yi.
The first thing Long Yi did upon returning to the capital was visit the twins. Naturally, he mentioned to Yuya’er the whereabouts of Xiao Ji and Qin Fengwen.
Xiao Zhen’er didn’t return with them because the recent incident had made Xiao Ming change his mind. He decided his daughter would return to the capital at year-end with the brothers Xiao En and Xiao Ze to avoid Long Yi, the scoundrel who had taken advantage of her.
Gu Jiao had finished preparing and was waiting for Xiao Heng.
Xiao Heng kissed his wife, changed clothes in the inner room, and then rode with her in a carriage to the palace.
Inside the carriage, Xiao Heng waited, but Yuya’er didn’t come with the twins. “Yan’er and Cong’er…”
Gu Jiao said, “Long Yi took them. Don’t worry, they’ll enter the palace soon.”
Whether they used the main gate depended on Long Yi. If he wanted to scale walls, the palace guards couldn’t stop him.
Xiao Heng exhaled, “Thank heaven, my parents are finally back.”
Now, the twins could be sent away, Yiyi could be sent away, and he could have a private moment with JiaoJiao. He was happy.
“Elder brother! Sister-in-law!”
A small head with tiny flower bun popped through the carriage curtain, looking at them adorably.
Xiao Heng was in a good mood, as he would soon return the child to its owner, along with the twins as a bonus.
The three entered the palace.
Xiao Ji and Qin Fengwen were still brooding over the rumors, sitting in a pavilion, and even the garden flowers dared not bloom in the current atmosphere.
Xiao Heng held little Yiyi’s hand, looked at the pavilion ahead, and said, “See your parents? Go greet them.”
Yiyi’s little head turned, eyes bright, “Brother Chang Jing!”
She waved her tiny hands and ran to him.
Ignoring their little daughter being “kidnapped” by Chang Jing, the two remained sitting in the pavilion, sighing.
Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao walked over and greeted them.
Xiao Ji looked at his son and daughter-in-law and asked, “You’ve heard the rumors outside. What do you think?”
“What rumors?” Gu Jiao asked.
It was a little awkward to say this in front of the children. Even Xiao Ji hesitated before clearing his throat and saying seriously, “I brought a concubine back from the border, and your mother… has taken a male favorite.”
Xiao Heng stammered, “Uh… is that just a rumor?”
Xiao Ji: “…”
“My Lord! Princess! You’re back!”
Steward Liu came running with a pile of high-quality supplements prepared by Xiao Heng for Empress Dowager Zhuang.
Xiao Ji waved at him, “Come here.”
“Yes, my Lord.” As Xiao Ji’s trusted aide, Steward Liu had always been loyal.
Xiao Ji looked at Qin Fengwen, took his hand in public, and said solemnly, “The princess and I have reconciled. From now on, we will respect each other, live in harmony, and be devoted, inseparable spouses.”
Qin Fengwen blushed.
The pavilion was silent for three full seconds.
Xiao Ji said calmly, “What? You don’t believe it?”
“Yes, yes, yes!” Steward Liu was ecstatic. “Congratulations, my Lord! Congratulations, Princess! I told you, you two are made for each other! No couple in the world is more devoted than you!”
Xiao Ji was satisfied. “Now that sounds human.”
The next second, Steward Liu leaned closer under the pretense of adjusting his clothes and whispered, “My Lord, blink if you’re being threatened.”
Xiao Ji: “…”
Dinner was set in Renshou Palace, and Old Chief also came.
The reason was that two-year-old Qin Wuyou had begun lessons, and Old Chief was his tutor, coming daily to the palace.
But as the imperial eldest grandson, Qin Wuyou couldn’t study alone. Many peers were selected as companions, including three-and-a-half-year-old Gu Xiaobao.
Gu Xiaobao lived in Renshou Palace.
After each lesson, Old Chief personally escorted him there.
This time, he delivered Gu Xiaobao to the gate of Renshou Palace and happened to meet the Emperor, who was there for dinner.
As Qin Wuyou’s companion and a familiar face at Bishui Alley and Renshou Palace, Gu Xiaobao had met the Emperor many times.
The little adult stood properly and bowed, “Your Majesty.”
“So Xiaobao is here.” the Emperor said kindly. “Did you finish today’s lessons?”
Gu Xiaobao thought a moment and replied, “No.”
He actually knew them, but Qin Wuyou didn’t, so he couldn’t either. He had been clever since childhood.
The Emperor was pleased. It wasn’t the grandson who was slow; Old Chief’s lessons were just too difficult.
“Go inside.” the Emperor said.
Gu Xiaobao went to see Grandaunt.
As the Emperor turned to enter, Old Chief asked knowingly, “Your Majesty, Renshou Palace seems lively. Did something happen?”
The Emperor said casually, “Marquis Xuanping and Princess Xinyang returned and are paying respects to Empress Dowager inside.”
Old Chief stroked his beard. “Ah, the princess is back. I should go pay my respects.”
You’re not close to her; why pay respects?
The Emperor said, “Too late tonight. You can go to her residence tomorrow.”
Old Chief: “Not late, not late!”
The Emperor: Didn’t you see I was sending you away?
Old Chief: Ah, my old eyes are failing, I didn’t see.
With Xiao Ji and his son present, along with Chang Jing and Long Yi, it would be inappropriate to keep Old Chief outside. The Emperor reluctantly led him into Renshou Palace.
Old Chief paid his respects to Princess Xinyang and stayed.
The Emperor sat fuming, legs shaking. “Do you intend to dine here?”
Old Chief bowed. “Since Your Majesty says so, I must obey.”
Dinner was set in the courtyard, with flowers, moonlight, and late spring scenery.
The children finished eating early and played energetically in the garden, accompanied by several young palace maids.
Qin Fengwen rubbed her sore arms. Just holding Yiyi and the twins had left her aching all over.
“It’s so good to be young.” She sighed.
The adults finished eating, the servants cleared the table, and set up tea.
Xiao Ji peeled oranges for Qin Fengwen. “What’s good about being young?”
Thinking of the rumors about him taking a concubine, she said sourly, “You men just like young girls.”
Xiao Ji was about to reply when Old Chief, matter-of-factly, cut in, “Who says that?”
He looked at Old Chief. Old Chief wasn’t looking at them and didn’t seem to be speaking to them.
Xiao Ji continued peeling oranges. “Qin Fengwen, I see you dozens of times a day. Don’t you realize? Those young girls, I haven’t even glanced at one.”
Qin Fengwen touched her face. “When I get older, you won’t want to look at me anymore.”
Xiao Ji picked out the pith from the orange segments she didn’t like, raising an eyebrow. “You get old, does that mean I don’t? Even ten, twenty, thirty years from now, you’ll still be the most beautiful elderly lady in the State of Zhao.”
Old Chief: “Exactly!”
Xiao Ji turned and gave Old Chief a strange look.
Qin Fengwen, sitting farther away with less acute hearing, hadn’t heard Old Chief.
She lowered her gaze and said softly, “When I’m very, very old, will you still want to look at me?”
Old Chief: “Of course.”
Xiao Ji frowned. What’s gotten into you today, surnamed Huo?
Under the moonlight, Empress Dowager Zhuang watched the playful children while Old Chief quietly watched her.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
