Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

After finishing the bow, Teacher Sun smiled slightly and said with genuine sincerity, “The value of Pi you recited back then was correct. It was I who was too arbitrary and wrongfully accused you.”

This matter had taken place back when Little Jing Kong had first entered the Imperial Academy.

Teacher Sun had taught the children of the prodigy class a math problem and expanded the topic to the value of Pi. The value passed down by the ancestors only extended to seven decimal places, and this was recorded in the Ten Computational Classics, yet Little Jing Kong had recited up to seventeen or eighteen decimal places in one breath.

Teacher Sun insisted that Little Jing Kong was spouting nonsense and disrupting the class.

Little Jing Kong, on the other hand, accused Teacher Sun of misleading his students and then threw ten arithmetic problems at Teacher Sun, problems that Gu Jiao had privately taught him and which successfully stumped Teacher Sun.

Unconvinced, Teacher Sun gave him ten questions in return, and Little Jing Kong solved half of them.

He even delivered a line infuriating enough to kill a man without taking responsibility: “What is strange about me not being able to solve the remaining questions? I am a student! I am attending class precisely because I do not know how to do these things. If I already knew everything, what would I need a teacher for?”

Teacher Sun had been so angered that he grabbed a ruler to hit his palm, but Little Jing Kong dodged quickly, and instead of hitting the boy, Teacher Sun fell to the ground himself.

The entire class burst into laughter, and students from the other four classes rushed in to watch the scene, leaving Teacher Sun thoroughly humiliated, both inside and out, to the point that he actually cried from anger on the spot.

Afterward, Xiao Heng brought Little Jing Kong to apologize to Teacher Sun.

As a student, he should not have disrespected his teacher, nor should he have disrupted the classroom.

However, at the same time, Xiao Heng also made a request of Teacher Sun: “Regarding the matter of the value of Pi, I will make every effort to verify the calculation. If it turns out that Jing Kong was correct, then I hope Teacher Sun can also apologize to Jing Kong, because you falsely accused him.”

Little Jing Kong had been deeply moved by his bad brother-in-law at the time, yet afterward Xiao Heng never brought up the matter again, so he gradually stopped considering it a big deal and completely forgot about it.

Xiao Heng later found the formula for calculating the value of Pi in that national book of the State of Yan. After learning it himself, he taught it to Teacher Sun.

Teacher Sun had completed the calculation three days ago.

……

When they exited the teacher’s quarters, it was raining outside, and the large raindrops beat rhythmically against the eaves.

The rain had come so suddenly that no one had anticipated it beforehand.

The coachman was waiting outside the quarters holding an umbrella.

There were only two umbrellas; Xiao Heng handed one to the coachman and gave the other to Little Jing Kong.

The rain was heavy and fierce, and small streams of water were already winding their way across the lower parts of the ground.

Xiao Heng crouched down in front of Little Jing Kong. “Get on.”

Little Jing Kong muttered, “I can walk by myself.”

“Hurry.” Xiao Heng urged.

Moving slowly and reluctantly, Little Jing Kong finally climbed onto his bad brother-in-law’s back, opened the umbrella, and held it up to shield them from the torrential rain that was pouring down without restraint.

Xiao Heng stepped through the puddles with uneven strides, and before long both the hem of his robe and his pair of shoes were completely soaked through.

The late-spring rain was cold, carrying with it what felt like the final trace of resistance against the approaching summer.

Little Jing Kong lay across Xiao Heng’s broad and warm back, unable to ignore the steady warmth and breath of the person carrying him.

He thought of the events of the day and grumbled softly, “Why did you even remember that? Who cares about his apology?”

Xiao Heng said, “Then should I ask Teacher Sun to take it back?”

Little Jing Kong said, “No!”

Xiao Heng let out a laugh.

“All right, then. No rent for you this year.”

“And remember to pay me back the three hundred taels you still owe.”

“Bad brother-in-law!”

……

By the time this year ended, Little Jing Kong was nine years old, and he had become an undisputed prodigy who was already far ahead of the children in elementary studies, to the extent that Xiao Heng and Old Chief had to give him extra lessons in private from time to time.

He wanted to sit for the imperial examinations.

Xiao Heng had no objection, and Gu Jiao agreed as well.

He passed in one go and successfully obtained the status of *Tongsheng. (*Basically the starting point of an official scholar)

A nine-year-old Tongsheng was still quite a rarity, and he was very pleased with himself. He took the certificate to show off to his bad brother-in-law, only to learn that his bad brother-in-law had passed at the age of eight.

He felt completely defeated.

How could his bad brother-in-law be earlier than him?

“At what age did bad brother-in-law become a Xiucai*?” he asked one of the household servants. (*Scholars who passed the entry-level imperial exam.)

The servant replied, “At ten years old. Originally, the Little Marquis could have taken the Xiucai exam right after he became a Tongsheng, but Her Highness said there was no need to be too early and held him back for two years before letting him take the exam. He passed immediately at that time.”

He wanted to become a nine-year-old Xiucai. He wanted to be more impressive than his bad brother-in-law.

The entry-level imperial exam of the previous dynasty was held twice every three years, but the current dynasty, in order to select more talent, had changed it to once a year.

This year’s exam happened not to have taken place yet, so Little Jing Kong eagerly signed up.

He was confident about the exam, and both Old Chief and Xiao Heng also believed he would have no trouble passing.

However, no one could have predicted that the always-fortunate boy would find himself disastrously unlucky on the very day of the exam.

Little Eight’s child chewed up his exam permit.

Yes, that little puppy Little Eight, whom Gu Yan had brought from the county estate to the capital, had already grown up and become a father, producing two little puppies of his own.

Little Jing Kong cried in complete collapse.

Passing at the age of ten would still not be considered too late, and he could draw even with his bad brother-in-law.

But indeed, he became unlucky again.

On the day before the exam, he broke his hand.

Even at eleven years old, though one year later, it was still not too late.

This time he finally managed to enter the examination hall, but once he finished writing his paper, the paper caught on fire…

He threw his head back and roared in despair, “Bad brother-in-law, did you pass all your bad luck on to me?!”

At the age of twelve, he gave up on the exam altogether.

And when war reignited among the six states, he enlisted in the army.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
