“JiaoJiao, Your Majesty.” Xuanyuan Xi greeted Gu Jiao and Shangguan Yan.
Shangguan Yan nodded with satisfaction and said, “This journey must have been hard on you; were you injured at all?”
“No.” He said, shaking his head decisively.
Then he looked around and said, “Eh? Why don’t I see Cong’er and Xiao Xuan?”
Xiao Yan sat in the crook of his arm and tattled with an exaggerated expression, “Little brother rode the sled and got so scared he puked!”
Xiao Cong, who was being carried over by a palace maid, darkened his face once more; he had gotten motion-sick and thrown up, all right!
Xiao Xuan was the third child of Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng, born in the twelfth lunar month, and he had just celebrated his second birthday a few days ago.
He was sleeping.
Shangguan Yan knew that Jing Kong had just returned and that the siblings had many private words to share, so she smiled considerately and said, “Xiao Xuan should be waking up soon as well; you can go see him, and come to the Fenglin Palace for dinner this evening.”
“All right.” Gu Jiao agreed.
Shangguan Yan led everyone away.
Xuanyuan Xi set Xiao Yan down and cupped his hands toward Shangguan Yan in a formal salute.
Gu Jiao gazed steadily at the handsome, jade-like, well-read and courteous youth before her, and she could not help but feel a surge of emotion, realizing that the little dumpling from back then had truly grown up.
Xiao Yan was able to walk on her own, and she skipped and hopped ahead with lively little steps.
Xiao Cong had just vomited and was looking rather weak at the moment.
Gu Jiao was about to take him from the palace maid’s arms.
“I’ll do it.” Xuanyuan Xi said.
He extended his long arms and picked up five-year-old Xiao Cong.
“Uncle Jing Kong.” Xiao Cong called out listlessly.
He looked gently at the little one in his arms and said, “Don’t talk.”
Gu Jiao glanced at him with a slight curve at the corner of her lips and said, “You’ve grown taller.” then paused before adding, “And you’ve gotten tanner.”
He had been feeling quite pleased after hearing the first sentence, but the second one made him stiffen instantly.
The dark history of once having been tanned into a little dark kid by his bad brother-in-law surged into his mind, and with a wry expression he began looking around.
Gu Jiao said, “Your brother-in-law isn’t here; he went to repair firelances with your Brother Qing.”
Xuanyuan Xi gave a light cough and said, “I wasn’t looking for my bad brother-in-law!”
Gu Jiao laughed.
“You were injured, weren’t you?” She asked.
“I wasn’t injured.” He said decisively.
Gu Jiao said, “All right, then later let me check.”
He choked for a moment, his gaze flickering slightly, as he said, “No, I… I’m not a child anymore, you can’t just look at me like that.”
There were far too many big and small injuries on his body, and he did not want her to see them.
Besides, what did his injuries even count as?
However badly he had been hurt, JiaoJiao back then had only suffered more and worse.
He hurriedly changed the subject and said, “Has Xiao Xuan’s health improved?”
Strangely enough, although Xiao Xuan had been a single birth and had been born full-term, his constitution was much weaker than that of the prematurely born dragon-and-phoenix twins.
Jing Kong remembered that after the little one was born, he had fallen ill almost every month, and during the confinement period his weight had not increased but instead dropped, and watching him drink medicine had made Jing Kong’s heart ache terribly.
Gu Jiao paused for a moment before saying, “Much better.”
As they spoke, the two of them arrived at the Second Prince’s sleeping quarters, and although Jing Kong was an unrelated male by blood, Shangguan Yan had long since issued a decree permitting him to reside in the imperial palace, so no palace servant dared to stop him.
Just as the two of them were about to reach the entrance of the bedchamber, they saw a silly little bean curiously poke his head out in an adorably clueless manner.
The little bean only poked out half of his tiny body, craning his head as he cautiously looked around outside.
He had a round little head perched on his shoulders, was dressed in a clean monk’s robe, and had a string of small but noticeably heavy Buddhist beads hanging around his neck.
One of his tiny hands was braced against the doorframe, while the other clutched those little prayer beads, making him look extremely well-behaved and adorably endearing.
Xuanyuan Xi, however, was instantly stunned and blurted out in disbelief, “Th-this, this, who is this?”
Before his words had even finished falling, the little bean spotted Gu Jiao, and though he clearly wanted to come out, he forcibly restrained himself, clinging to the doorframe as he called out in a soft, milky voice, “Mother!”
Xuanyuan Xi froze on the spot, completely petrified.
This little monk… could he possibly be Xiao Xuan?
Xiao Xuan had become a monk?!
Gu Jiao saw the confusion written all over his face, and as she led him toward Xiao Xuan, she explained, “Xiao Xuan has a weak constitution and was always falling ill every few days, so later my mother carried him to a temple, and the master there said that he has an affinity with Buddhism.”
Xuanyuan Xi stared at her with his mouth agape. “And then… he became a monk?”
Gu Jiao took little Xiao Xuan’s hand and said, “Mm, more or less. These clothes are actually ones you wore when you were little; Princess Mother said that wearing old clothes accumulates blessings and helps children grow up safely.”
Xuanyuan Xi muttered blankly, “No wonder they looked so familiar…”
When Xuanyuan Xi left home, Xiao Xuan was only one year old, and now that an entire year had passed, Xiao Xuan no longer remembered him; the child lifted his round little head, blinked his big grape-like black eyes, and looked at him with curiosity as he asked, “Who are you?”
Xuanyuan Xi gently pinched his chubby little cheek. “I’m your Uncle Jing Kong, do you remember me?”
Little Xiao Xuan shook his head very honestly.
Xuanyuan Xi laughed.
Xiao Cong, who was lying in his arms, lifted his eyelids and shot his younger brother a glance before saying, “Tell Uncle Jing Kong what your name is.”
Little Xiao Xuan obediently nodded and began introducing himself in his soft, milky voice. “My name is Xiao Xuan, my Dharma name is Shi Xin.”
Xuanyuan Xi thought to himself: He even has a Dharma name already…
Xiao Xuan looked thinner and smaller than children his age, but from what Gu Jiao had told him, he did indeed not fall ill as frequently this year as he had when he was one.
As a result, Yao shi and Princess Xinyang became even more convinced that raising the little fellow as a monk was the right decision.
After all, there was precedent for this among the relatives they knew——Yuan Baolin, who was a Taoist nun.
Gu Jiao held little Xiao Xuan’s hand and led him inside.
Watching the two-year-old little fellow stumble through the snow with uneven steps, Xuanyuan Xi suddenly felt the urge to ask JiaoJiao whether she wouldn’t pick him up and carry him.
Little old-soul Xiao Cong noticed his confusion and said calmly, “Mother holds you the most; she rarely carries the three of us.”
Xuanyuan Xi froze.
Gu Jiao had given all of her love to her eldest son, Jing Kong, without holding anything back; back then, she still did not know how to be a parent, and together with Xiao Heng, she stumbled through raising that little monk she had brought back from the mountains.
The little monk followed behind her all day long, determined to be her little tail.
The little monk always sat on the doorstep and no matter how late it was, he would wait for her to come home.
The little monk knew how to act spoiled, would ask for kisses, and loved to cling to her arms.
When raising a child for the first time, she had absolutely no way of dealing with that clingy little monk and could only dote on him endlessly.
Fortunately, she did not spoil him rotten.
That clumsy little monk who used to fall down everywhere had grown into a towering, upright Black Wind Cavalry youth.
Xiao Cong sighed like a little adult and said, “Sigh, so jealous.”
Xuanyuan Xi’s eyes were rimmed with red, and a warm surge rolled through his chest.
His JiaoJiao…
Xiao Cong offered a friendly reminder. “Uncle, you’re holding me too tightly, I can’t breathe.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
