Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Xiao Heng and Shangguan Qing did not return until an hour later.

Shangguan Qing’s harem had grown larger and larger; after the main wife, he now had six more concubines, each one a top-tier firelance.

Today, it was his main wife who had broken down, and it had taken quite a while to fix her.

The two brothers still did not know that Jing Kong had returned, and as they walked toward the sleeping quarters of the dragon-and-phoenix twins, they chatted, “If you like firelances this much and Imperial Mother finds out, she’ll confiscate every single one of them.”

Shangguan Qing said, “Then don’t tell Imperial Mother!”

Xiao Heng said with an amused smile, “Mother asked me to check with you whether you were satisfied with the young ladies from the noble families she picked out for you last time.”

Shangguan Qing waved his hand dismissively, looking rather unconcerned, as he replied, “There’s nothing to be dissatisfied with; if she likes them, then just put them into my rear courtyard.”

Xiao Heng asked, “If you put so many in there, aren’t you afraid the rear courtyard will catch fire?”

Shangguan Qing slung one arm over his annoying younger brother’s shoulder and said with a roguish, world-weary grin, “Ah, men, surely you understand.”

Xiao Heng drew a firm line between them. “I don’t understand; my feelings for JiaoJiao are stronger than gold.”

Shangguan Qing hit the nail on the head with a single sentence. “Gold is very soft.”

Xiao Heng: “……”

To this day, Shangguan Qing had yet to encounter his own fated woman, the position of his main wife remaining vacant, and this made him quite troubled as well; it was not that he disliked women, but without meeting someone who truly moved his heart, what else could he possibly do?

“I’ve said it before, she has to be as skilled in martial arts as JiaoJiao, as dignified and gentle as Princess Mother, and as humorous and interesting as Imperial Mother. Only a woman like that is my destined one!”

Xiao Heng shot him a speechless sideways glance.

You might as well stay single for the rest of your life.

As the brothers continued talking, the sound of Xiao Yan patiently teaching her younger brother drifted out from the sleeping quarters.

“One plus one equals what?”

“One.” Xiao Xuan answered.

Xiao Yan pressed a hand to her forehead. “I’ve taught you this so many times already, it’s not one, it’s two!”

Little Xiao Xuan said, “Two.”

“That’s right!” Sitting cross-legged on the heated kang bed in the room, Xiao Yan faced her younger brother and said, “Let’s do it again, one plus one equals what?”

Little Xiao Xuan said, “One.”

Xiao Yan: “……”

Xiao Yan took a deep breath. “One times one equals one! Then what about two plus two?”

She held up four fingers, her eyes sparkling brightly as she looked at little Xiao Xuan.

Little Xiao Xuan said, “Two.”

Xiao Yan completely collapsed!

Xiao Yan sat upright, grabbed at the front of her clothes with her small hands, and regulated her breathing. “Don’t be angry, don’t be angry. Let’s count, one, two, three, four, five. This one you know, right?”

Little Xiao Xuan nodded vigorously.

Xiao Yan taught him seriously, “One, two, three, four, five!”

Little Xiao Xuan answered just as seriously, “Sneak up the hill, make the tiger dive!”

Xiao Yan immediately performed a dramatic 180-degree sprawl, pretending to vomit blood, and after finishing her imaginary hemorrhage, she let her head loll to the side, collapsing completely onto the warm kang bed with her small body sprawled in every direction.

Next door, Gu Jiao had just finished examining Xiao Cong, and it turned out he was merely experiencing simple motion sickness, with nothing serious going on, and he would be fine after resting for a day or two.

She had the wet nurse take Xiao Cong out.

Xuanyuan Xi also planned to leave.

“Sit down.” Gu Jiao said.

Xuanyuan Xi scratched his head and laughed. “I really don’t need to! I didn’t even throw up!”

Gu Jiao directly pressed him down into the chair, and the white, blazing light filtering through the window paper fell upon the youth’s jade-like handsome face, where a trace of bashfulness appeared, his ears visibly flushing red.

“I, I’m really fine.” He said.

Gu Jiao took his pulse and asked sternly, “Where are you injured?”

“Nowhere…” He instinctively retorted, but then seemed to think of something, his gaze flickering as he raised his left wrist and said, “Do you mean this?”

Gu Jiao slightly pulled up his sleeve, revealing a patch of red swelling and bruising.

He said casually, “That day I didn’t hold the red-tasseled spear steadily and accidentally twisted it.”

Back then, even scraping a little skin off his knee would make him sit on the doorstep, waiting to show her his tiny injury, saving his little tears so he could cry for her once she came home.

Now, covered in wounds from head to toe, he would not say a single word about it.

“I’ll do it.”

Xiao Heng’s voice suddenly appeared at the doorway.

Both of them turned to look at him at the same time.

“You’re back.” Gu Jiao said.

Xiao Heng nodded and stepped into the room, glancing at the little medicine chest on the table as he said to Gu Jiao, “They’re putting up the couplets outside; do you want to go take a look?”

“Sure.” Gu Jiao left the little medicine chest behind and turned to walk out of the room.

Xuanyuan Xi pouted reluctantly. “Why? I only got to talk to JiaoJiao for a couple minutes, you bad brother-in-law!”

Just now, when Xiao Heng had seen him at the doorway, he had felt a little hesitant to acknowledge him. After a year apart, he had grown taller and more mature; he was no longer the innocent little child he had been. There was now a heroic air of a commanding soldier about him, combined with the sharpness of someone seasoned by the battlefield.

Yet as soon as he spoke, Xiao Heng immediately realized that he was still the same clever little monk who had once outwitted him time and again.

Xiao Heng said to him, “Alright, JiaoJiao has already left, there’s nothing left to hide, take off your clothes.”

Xuanyuan Xi crossed his arms cautiously. “What are you doing?”

Xiao Heng picked up the ointment on the table and said calmly, “If you don’t finish this bottle, and JiaoJiao asks about it, I won’t be able to cover for you.”

Faced with the choice between making JiaoJiao worry or making his bad brother-in-law worry, Xuanyuan Xi chose the latter.

“Then promise to keep it a secret. Don’t tell JiaoJiao.”

“Got it.”

He loosened his clothes, revealing his body covered in scars that crisscrossed and told the story of his injuries.

Xiao Heng had bathed him when he was a child and knew every scar and pockmark on his body.

He had expected him to be hurt, but he had not anticipated that the injuries would be this severe.

Although most of them had healed by now, they must have hurt terribly at the time.

After all, this was the child he had raised himself.

“You…” Xiao Heng’s throat tightened painfully.

Xuanyuan Xi pretended not to notice the redness in his eyes and turned his face away. “Hurry up, I’m cold.”

Even the tip of his nose felt a little stingy.

It felt strange, he hadn’t meant to cry, but when his bad brother-in-law’s eyes reddened, he couldn’t help it either.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
