“N-Now, now. Rael and you people… My daughters! Right, daughters! What is wrong with you? If you wanted to seek me out, all you had to do was ask nicely!”
Was he being unreasonable, or was he just an idiot?
Rael felt like it would be easier to tell by just flipping a coin.
Either way…
“Arthur, why’d you run away?”
Arthur met Rael’s gaze.
“Why wouldn’t I run away? I’m wanted by the entire continent. If anyone caught me, they would have blackmailed me into giving away the Holy Kingdom. I could never do that.”
“Well, if it makes you feel any better, there’s not much of a Holy Kingdom left,” Rael replied plainly. “After that fight all of those months ago, pretty much the majority of it was destroyed. People have begun rebuilding, but it’s just a massive tourist attraction at this point.”
Hearing that, Arthur felt his heart drop. Yet before he could get all political, Linlin stepped up and waved her hand. In the next instant, a pair of invisible threads wrapped around Arthur’s neck, squeezing it tightly and drawing blood.
The blood painted the threads, making them visible. But clearly, Linlin wasn’t the only one with a grudge, as Qiqi approached and glared at Arthur.
“Why’d you kill our mom?”
“What…? I never killed her,” Arthur reasoned. “She died of illness. I swear.”
“Swear on what?” Linlin asked, tightening the threads. “What do you have left to swear on besides your pitiful and worthless life?”
He opened and closed his mouth, seemingly unable to find the right words to say.
After all, she was right.
What did he really have left to say?
Nothing.
He wasn’t a king anymore, nor did anyone respect him.
The only title he had left that he could’ve tried waving around was deemed useless, since neither of his daughters cared about him in the slightest.
In the end, he just stood there with his head slightly lowered.
Rael kind of pitied him.
But then again, Rael pitied everyone who was hated by their family. After all, even Melissa hates him.
Jeez…
This guy’s crimes and mine are probably not even close. I really should stop.
“Should I leave you guys to it?” Rael asked.
Linlin turned toward him, then nodded.
“Yes, please.”
Rael nodded back at her, respecting her privacy. He passed through the rest of the group, and clearly, by how much their demeanor had changed, they really appreciated what he had done for them.
But damn.
He kind of felt exhausted.
Mentally, rather.
He could never take back the time he lost, but it seemed like the universe was giving him an opportunity to make it right.
As overly poetic and cringe as it may have sounded, Rael stepped outside. He made sure there were no more Snow Leviathans in any of these caves, and afterwards, he flew to the very top and just waited there patiently.
Rather, he wanted to, but when he saw the cool ice structures, Rael’s inner chuunibyou could barely resist as he made his way toward them and began touching the structures all over.
They were actually normal ice, which meant that they had either naturally formed or someone talented enough managed to carve these structures here.
It’s definitely nice… Maybe I should look into buying some cool structures? That’d definitely be a cool investment. I’m way too rich for my own good, after all.
Rael messed around for a little longer, and half an hour later, he saw Linlin’s silhouette emerge from the giant hole. She had blood all over her fingertips, and even a single drop on her cheek.
Yet despite her appearance, she looked like she was finally free. He honestly didn’t expect it, since revenge rarely feels sweet.
But he was happy for her.
Though, when Qiqi emerged next, Rael froze.
Her whole face was covered in blood, as well as her hands. Yet her wide smile was still visible.
For one, he never expected the little one to be a little messed up in the head.
But then again, if his sister were Linlin, he was sure he’d be a little messed up too.
When the others came back up, they didn’t look nearly as bad. But seeing how there was no Arthur beside them, it was clear that they had done what they had to do back there.
Just in case, though, Rael swept his mana over the surroundings and made sure that he was actually dead.
Thankfully, he was, and his condition looked pretty gruesome.
Heck, with his head split open and body parts scattered around, Rael decided to just collapse the cave from the inside, making sure no one would ever need to see that in the future.
And with that, Rael’s end of the deal was done.
…He hoped.
“Thank you.”
Linlin bowed to him.
Qiqi did too, as well as the rest of the group.
“Without your help, we might’ve been searching for a couple more years. By then, he would’ve likely died from old age.”
Rael puffed out his chest.
“Don’t mention it.”
“Though…”
Linlin scratched the back of her head.
“What comes next? How do you deal with other goals after reaching the goals you truly cared about?”
Hmm…?
“Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to get rid of him. Now that I actually did it, I feel empty. I felt like our purpose had already vanished earlier, but now… it’s even worse.”
For once, Rael couldn’t exactly relate to her.
When he first got into this world, his goal was simple.
All he wanted to do was just mess around, get money, get stronger, get together with Zafira, and handle a few more teeny tiny details.
Only after the world decided to shove its balls down his throat did he need to deal with Solenne and the others. Still, if they hadn’t come around, Rael was sure that he would continue being a regular person.
But how was he supposed to give that kind of advice to Linlin?
Jeez…
He needed backup.
